Hip Arthroscopy Hip Arthroscopy ups and downs

Hey Alfie. Hope you are plugging along. Have a happy day.

Hi @Mojo333, Sorry I haven’t replied earlier, I’ve had one of those weeks.

Try to make sure you stay upright, falling over isn’t good for you. I imagine things are ramping up for you at work so try not to be over doing it now.

This week has been my worst yet. I’m finding it hard to sleep as both hips are hurting now and getting comfortable is a real problem. I’m still taking 100mg of Tramadol before bedtime but waking up with dreadful night sweats, even though the temperatures have been below zero here for the last few weeks. I am getting a little worried as I have been on the Tramadol for nearly 5 months now. I try not to take anything during the day, maybe paracetamol or ibuprofen if thing get bad, but to be honest I don’t think they have much of an impact.

On Tuesday I went to see the doctor to get his take on how he thinks things should progress from here. He seemed to think that they wouldn’t give me a replacement because of my age and that they would probably try and keep me hobbling along full of drugs and steroid injections until I really can’t walk any more. Not what I wanted to hear. That said it’s the surgeon that makes the decisions so let’s hope he has a different outlook.

It’s been really hard to focus over the last few days. I can feel myself slipping into a bit of an anxious, depressive state, not wanting to get up in a morning and feeling panicky on occasions. I’m also worried that my predicament is effecting the rest of the family. We can’t plan anything at the moment as I don’t know how things are going to plan out over the next 12 months.

On top of that, to finish the week off, I was framing a picture yesterday and dropped a scalpel that went straight through my middle toe. :yikes: Luckily it missed any tendons, just a lot of blood. I was in the house on my own, so had to try and bandage it up with my limited movement. I can laugh about it today, but thought I was going to pass out. I’m such a baby where blood is concerned.

Does your work involve alot of walking ?
Or alot of sitting?

I work for myself as a graphic designer so I spend a lot of time sat down. That said, I do have to travel and work away from home on occasions, sometimes for weeks at a time. This isn’t something I couldn’t even consider doing at the moment. I’m dreading the phone ringing with a job out of town as I don’t want to be turning work down.

Well that turned into an epic post. Sorry to moan on so much. It’s the weekend now so I’m going to do something to cheer me up. Like change the wiper on my car that’s been driving me nuts squeaking all week.

Have a good weekend :)

Sorry for your week @Alfie888. I hope surgeon has answers for you. I don’t understand basing surgery on chronological age. Evidently our hips never got the memo of when they should get bad.i don’t hear of doctors saying they won’t do heart surgery because someone is too young to have arteries in bad shape. Glad foot cut wasn’t worse. Feet just hurt more regardless of injury due to being at the bottom. Do you see surgeon soon? Hope today is better for you.

Hi @MammaT, Well said. I see the surgeon at the end of January, so not to far away. The thing that is having the biggest effect on me is the lack of quality sleep. Everything seems like an uphill struggle when I’m tired, and it’s not like I can go wear myself out with a long walk up the coast or bike ride.

To be honest I haven’t had any pain in my foot. I didn’t even know I’d done it, just felt something land on my toe. I can move it and you can hardly tell where it’s cut today, so I aren’t worrying about it to much.

Yes @Jaycey, you are right. Let’s see what happens in January. I do so hope I don’t have to go through all the hassle of having to find a surgeon who will operate elsewhere when I have a surgeon and facilities 15mins away from where I live.

@MammaT, I don’t think I can talk Benadryl with Tramadol. I looked into this a while ago and Benadryl in the U.K. doesn’t contain Diphenhydramine as it does in the US. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thanks @Jaycey, you can bet I’ll be asking for you help if my surgeon doesn’t play ball.

So sorry for all your struggles @Alfie888
Losing sleep over discomfort or pain is frustrating.
Prayers that the anxiety and mildly depressive state you're feeling dissipates.
Hopefully the month of January brings you some relief as you await your date with the surgeon.
Best wishes you get the care you need to eliminate your physical pain.

Hi @Alfie888 I just wanted to offer my Empathy because I related to your most recent update...the depressive feeling and worrying about the struggle on your family. I've been in a 2.5yr battle with Chrohns disease and AVN in my hip. It's put so much of our life on hold and I've often felt depressed and burdensome despite having a truly wonderful family and support system. I know it feels heavy and the light at the end of the tunnel far away, but I assure you as has been the experience of mine and others: those that matter won't mind and those that mind don't matter. :friends:

Good luck in January....don't be afraid to be your own advocate. I had to push forward...my OS wasnt keen on my THR initially because of my being "young", but it came down to quality of life-MY LIFE! :yes!:

Sorry to hear that your resurfacing didn’t give you the results you were hoping for @Alfie888. I hope you get options at your January appointment.

Thanks for your support. Let’s hope this week brings some relief. I’ve been cleaning and tidying all day, that always lifts my spirits for some bizarre reason. I’ve also got to do my tax returns before Christmas, and that always cheers me up no end :snork:

@MammaT, No problem, it is confusing as to what is available in what country and the brand names are all different.

Merry Christmas my purple pal...hope your holiday is peaceful and bright.:gbh:

Tax returns before Christmas-oh my! Hope you are able to get some rest.

Well, hopefully those tax returns are behind you, the house has been tidied and cleaned
and you've had a peaceful relaxing day. Merry Christmas! Warm wishes for a great week.
@Alfie888

I think quality of life is so much important than age or how much longer you can hold off.
I'm praying for you to get those hips fixed...I couldn't sleep or sit or rest without pain and one must be able to turn off their brain and pain some or it will make you bonkers!
Sending you good mojo.

@MammaT, @Layla, @Mojo333, Sorry I haven’t replied earlier. Got wound up in all the Christmas thing, then playing catch up at work. I hope you are all well and had a good holidays.

Doing well @Alfie888. Totally understand holidays taking over. How are you doing? I hope you have gotten some rest. When do you see consultant this month?
