THR Hi! Post THR recovery

5 week anniversary today , as I look back that has passed quickly. Still not great sleeping or sitting casually although last night was A better nights kip. The fidgeting ,pillow restructuring after hitting the sack is frustrating but getting better. And the frequent peeing doesn't help. Comfy sitting not happening still ( the top of thigh into groin aches to the point I'm moving around like a cat on a hot tub roof hhaahhaa.) Another whinge my appetite isn't the same pre op , not nice and sense of taste not the same ( not got Covid ) .More or less stopped all meds ,just on vitamins now ,any advice on them ? Positives can get dressed myself aside one sock ,I'll have to get a grabber otherwise all fine .End of 5 week summary ,gotta move again .

My dear friend (sadly departed) Poppet wrote this article in our Library on Healing Phases & Nutrition. The last part of the piece has advice on vitamins and minerals.

Not sure why you would not have your appetite back at this stage. Are you taking any pain medication now - even occasionally?

You might want to talk to your GP about your appetite loss. Some medications suppress appetite. But if you aren't taking any I would get this checked.

Hello and Happy Tuesday JW,
Maybe healthy snacks several times a day would suffice over meals, just for the time being? May be worth a try...I hope your appetite returns to normal soon.
@JohnWilky

Did anyone get a massive electric shock on insertion of Spiinal tap , I had 4 ooccch.
yes I did!! Doc said oops sorry about that!! and in the end they couldnt get the spinal in so just had to do general anesthesia.

@JohnWilky the lack of appetite could be related to not being as active as you we’re pre-op. I find that I’m hungrier after I’ve walked more, but on the lazy days I’m eating out of routine and not hunger. Hope your improves soon along with everything else

5 weeks monday this week.

Attended what has turned out to be my final Physio Appt, a lot more gregarious occasion too, she was much more gentle with me this time, basically a 10 minute visit that included a set of 10 each of the exercises which they gave me two weeks ago, nothing too strenuous.

I have a 6 week check up with my surgeon next week and PT suggested speaking to him as too what should be undertaken physio wise from here on.

One minor challenge was walking without any crutches which I find tricky (not painful) but very limpy (is that a word ) PT suggested it was probably due to confidence or lack without support, but I will practice that a little more.

Happy enough to continue along this route, taking slowly slowly b smart advice.

Good day everyone

It's a big step to go from two crutches to nothing at all. Most people step down to one crutch and then a walking stick/cane.

Since you're still limping without the crutches, you still need something to help you with walking. You shouldn't give up all support until you can walk normally, without a limp.

There are no prizes for giving up the crutches early, and there's no time limit by which you should give them up. Most people naturally wean off them, by finding they are leaving them behind when they get up to walk again.

Try using just one crutch for a while and see how you go. It's much better to continue to use some support than it is to risk having a fall.

While you're walking, concentrate on using the correct heel to toe gait, like this:

sorry another question? Sleeping on your side , reading mixed messages , I,m 6 weeks ( Monday) see surgeon next Friday,so obviously will ask, but I trust Bonesmart to deliver the experienced solution .
Can and will it be comfortable to sleep on appropriate side.

cheers everyone

 Happy Friday, JW.
It took me longer than the average bear to attempt side sleeping as I was feeling apprehensive about trying for fear it would hurt. I’ll leave an article and I’m sure some members will stop by with their experience and timeline. I hope you have a nice weekend!

I half ( I know) attempted a good side sleep to no avail ,far too worried about the consequences over comfort , subsequently ended up having horrendous night with no sleep until early morning, in fact because I was fidgeting / moving feet / hips area back and forth across the bed, the area around my scar started to ache , took a couple of parcetamol and iced the area because I felt the area was swollen , maybe just me over thinking.

I,m assuming hippos the more the hip area gets back to normal the more it will ache and more sensitive , as of yet had very little pain from day one.Paranoid about the D word .

sorry for the whinge from a very snowy Stalybridge.

good luck everyone

@JohnWilky Did you put a pillow between your legs when you tried to side sleep. A pillow there means that top leg will not drop to the bed while you are sleeping.

I found it took several weeks before I could sleep for any length of time on the non-op side. I would sleep for 10-20 minutes and then wake and return to back sleeping. You build up gradually.
Paranoid about the D word.
Please don't worry. That hip will tell you when you have moved wrong.

Cloudy here but no snow!

Sorry J when you saying your back, how did you arrange your pillows etc ,another horrendous night again last night, is there any secret tips. Desperate.

Everyone is different in terms of what makes them comfortable while sleeping post op. Play around with extra pillows. Many of our members purchase body pillows when they start side sleeping.

I guess I was fortunate that several years before my first THR I got used to back sleeping post spinal surgery. My trick was a small pillow under my knees when I was back sleeping. This takes pressure off you lower spine.

A pillow between the knees when you are side sleeping is a must in these early days.

Are you taking enough pain medication before going to sleep? And if you need medication when waking up at night, take it.

6 week today !!! Now it seems fast celebrated by walking our regular route 40 mins using just one crutch.Doing simple daily exercises but relying on just walking and that seems to be working.Starting to feel better in myself and appetite getting much more normal .
My well documented sleep problems my concern still , sleeping on your back is rubbish , but I know from others experience I will get over it , thank God for Bonesmart.
Got my 6 week check up on Friday so will report back .
Good luck everyone,stay well.

@Dmcfad2
The very best of good wishes from a glorious sunny Manchester (Stalybridge) UK I’m sure you will be fine, from experience any pain, swelling, indigestion, bladder, constipation, hiccups haha, even sleeping better will come and go quickly so nay worry, slowly, slowly. Amazing you will be walking this time next week, incredible.
Good good luck.
Who’d have thought 6 weeks I would hook up with a “California girl“ comparing a new hip.
Hahahahaha. Good luck.
