Question, I only have one more physical therapy this week and two next week. I am just 4 weeks out from my surgery tomorrow and extension is good but flexion is only 98. I am able to walk around the house without a cane most of the time and even started doing my walking DVD sessions yesterday and will continue those and started on the elliptical too. Should I ask for more physical therapy, or just do it on my own?

I really like this hospital here, so close to home and it makes it easier for my husband to pop in. One weird thing though, they like to get you up at 4:30am to get you dressed before the morning shift comes on and so that being said the day shift has to get us ready for bed at 6:00pm.
Hi Debbie,
Well at least they get you up and dressed. No one helped me when I was in hospital, I know its bad. Even down to washing myself I couldn't reach around to do my back. Not one nurse asked me if I needed any help to wash. I am six weeks passed my op now, try and keep positive Deb, Good luck xx Lindy

:gaah::hairpulling::gaah::hairpulling::gaah::hairpulling:

That is just how I feel. Went to PT today, made sure I took my tramadol and Tylenol and even rubbed some Voltaren gel around my knee except for the incision area. I had did some walking and stretching and rubbing at home and actually PT went, I thought fairly well. I did the machines without making stupid grimacing faces and I even got further then I had on the machines. But when he measured me at the end of the session I was still at 98. I wanted to take that measuring device and and shove it up his ....... Now I am at 4 weeks today and out of his mouth comes the words MUA and he asked me when I see the doctor again. I see my OS next Wed. Now according to everything I read here it takes time and lots of icing and elevating. I have done that and still doing that. Now maybe my OS will say everything is fine, when I saw him last I think I was at 80 or something and he said that was good for 10 days when I had my staples out. So maybe I am worrying for nothing. I feel I am getting stronger every day, but just worry about the knee getting a good bend, or not being stuck at 98. I know what you all are going to say about my therapist and I will wait to see what my OS says but sometimes a person just doesn't know what to do because the orthopedic surgeon and our hospital are so highly recommended and where one in 6 in the nation doing this knee replacement when it first came out. I am just frustrated and don't know who to trust.:sorry:

You want too much too soon, Debbie. This is a 12 month recovery. You're at 1 month---1/12th of the way through---with 11/12ths to go. You have plenty of time for your flexion (bend) to increase. And it will, if you just don't push too hard---but it may be 8 weeks, or 12 weeks, or even 16 weeks before it's as much as you want. And your OS has no control over what your ROM turns out to be. So cut yourself some slack, take deep breaths, relax, and let it all go. You cannot rush the knee---but YOU WILL GET THERE---but it's going to take as long as it's going to take.

TIME & PATIENCE----TIME & PATIENCE----TIME & PATIENCE----you gotta dig deep down and find the PATIENCE to take the TIME that necessary to get through this.

That is what I thought, but it just scares me that my physical therapist is saying you have to have an MUA before it's too late.

Well, mine was stuck at 90 until 6 weeks, no one seemed overly concerned, and it's 120 now.

Thank you Janet, I hate when people try to scare a person like if you don't get it done by X week it will totally fail. My only thing is if I would need it, I want it done before the first of the year when my $10,000 deductible goes back into effect.

Debbie, if you truly end up needing an MUA---which I doubt---you have the rest of September and all of October and November---then you could have it done in December---it's an outpatient procedure. But just wait and see how things progress through November. And please don't trust the medical expertise of a physical therapist. I sure she means well---but she only knows what she's heard or been told---no life experience which plenty of us on the forum have.

Debbie, you are doing fine for four weeks. Next time you see your PT tell him/her to ZIP it about the MUA. They are not in charge of that part, your OS is and he may or may not suggest it, but it's entirely up to you if you want it, not anyone else! Physical Therapist are just that, not doctors! Your PT overstepped its bounds by even mentioning MUA.

Stay well my friend and don't let anyone brow beat you! You are in charge! :friends:

It amazes me that you are accomplishing so much and making such great strides, but your PT can railroad all that great feeling with his/her comment. Debbie, I am totally in awe of your progress. We're only two days apart but you are doing SO much more than I am able to, even though my bend measures better. Please listen to the wise folks here, know that it takes time. Maybe you can "fix" your PT the same way as your laptop: shut him down, restart, and see if he's more mindful of his words after that.
Take care

Hang tough Debbie, and be ready to accept the glacial pace that recovery can present at times. As others have said, you are very early in the process and have much time to gain rom. If you have a lot of time, read through my thread. It has taken me over a year to get relief and be hopeful for a future with normal level of activities that include walking without a limp.

Slow and steady wins the race, always.

Be well,

Dawn

Debbie, it strikes me that you're doing fine and the only one stressing out is the therapist.
...it just scares me that my physical therapist is saying you have to have an MUA before it's too late.
Aha, this isn't an opportunity to be scared by an expert giving you information, this is an opportunity to be scornful of an idiot peddling nonsense. There IS NO too late unnless you have a genuine scarring problem, which is pretty unusual.

I posted my scar today, I finally took a risk and shaved my legs. When the hair is coming through the compression stockings I don't care if I still am on coumadin or not, I'm shaving. I stayed away from the incision though.

I talked to my pharmacist today and I take my last coumadin tomorrow and then will be able to add ibuprofen to my array of pills. He told me I can take my Tramadol, Tylenol, and Ibuprofen at the same time. I am not sure if I will still take my Vicodin at night or not. I know to add up the limits of each kind of pills. I am hoping some of the swelling will go away if I add the Ibuprofen to the mix. Will have to get out the calculator to figure out how much of each and how often.

Nice scar Deb, better wait till some of the swelling goes down before telling your OS about a straighter cut, I have a feeling it will straighten out when the swelling is down. You are a bold one shaving with a razor, I'm still using my electric razor!

Debbie, you are doing wonderful for 4 weeks!! 98 flexation at 4 weeks is not grounds for an MUA. I agree with the rest here.. Tell the PT to zip it. You just take your time, relax, and don't let anyone scare you or make you feel you aren't doing well, because ,my, dear YOU ARE.

How many of you guys dream about your knees? Last night I had a dream about flexion. I was sitting on my bed and it is a high bed and my leg was hanging down in a 90 degree angle which I can do and someone was in my bedroom and I was complaining to them that people didn't think I had enough flexion, so I got off the bed and pulled my knee up behind me so it touched my butt. I woke up and thought I could still do that...LOL Just a dream, but maybe a premonition.....
