Hi Dawni, just to say hope you are feeling much better now you're home, it must have been so traumatic. I felt really angry on your behalf about the treatment in hospital. If you have the energy please do think about making a complaint to the Director of the Hosp and to the PCT- there are also websites where patients can rate the hospital. Nobody should be treated like that. All the best, I'll be on the other side on Tuesday so will share my experiences of the private hosp I'm going to. Love and best wishes xx

I referred to my staples as having a new zipper! The bruising is terrible I know. I was the same way. My entire leg and it was painful from the bruising too. It took one full month for my bruising to go away, I think it is pretty normal to look that way after TKR, all of the man handling, twisting, turning, grabbing, etc., try not to worry about it! Each day everything will get a little bit better. :friends:

Hi Dawni,

Your leg looks pretty good! You should have seen mine, Hills will tell you, it looked guesome, I guess something like Bonnies might have done. I dont think I had a pin prick from my thights down to my ankles that wasn't bruised in some way, and because I have hyper allergic skin on my legs, allergic to plasters, steri-strips, anything really, tried them all in the past, so had to have a large Mepilex dressing (the only thing that works) on which no one touched until the district nurse removed once I was home. I even had to take one into the hospital as they said they could not provide!!

Once the staples are removed it will feel so much better, and the tightness around the knee could continue for some time yet so please be patient with it, and continue gently exercising. The most important part you seem to have a handle on which is resting, icing and elevating. Plenty of time later to walk, and exercise more. The swelling has to be controlled in order to get the maximum bend, and that takes TIME.

Look forward to reading more from you re your recovery.:friends:

Hi Fiona's mum, just would like to say good luck for tomorrow hope all goes well and we will see you on this side xx

how long are we supposed to wear these support stockings ( Teds) we call them in the UK, they make my feet and legs so hot.

i have seen a few of you use an exercise bike, how soon can you start using one.x

Dawni, I don't know long you need to wear support stockings because I never had to wear any, or was never offered or told to wear them after the op. I would have hated it as I never wear tights or socks, my feet are far too hot, I live in flip flops until around Christmas when I migrate to my Uggs to go out, and then its feet straight in with no socks.

I think its far too early for you to be using an exercise bike, it takes a while to be able to get a rotation on them, there are lots of other exercises you need to be doing before that i.e. heel slides, leg lifts, small squats etc. Sitting in a rocking chair helps too as the movement is great for your knee.

You are still so early on in the recovery phase so please don't worry about pushing yourself too hard, its all about rest, elevating your leg, icing, and letting your knee recover from the operation which takes a lot out of you. Rest and enjoy it Dawni. :friends:

I guess I am lucky in that I really don't feel the cold too much so it does help!

Dawni,

I believe I was 4 weeks out before my PT had me try the bike. Hope that ansers your question.

If I remember correctly I was wearing the terrible TEDS for about 2 1/2 weeks po.

Hi Dawni

I didn't wear the stockings as the hospital I went to use the foot pump machine and gave me injections for clotting. I do believe it's about 6 weeks for the stockings but I am sure someone will inform you.

Using the bike depends on what your physio has in mind for you - it depends on your progress I believe. My physio has told me I will be on the bike on Monday and I will be 5 weeks by then. Aretha is quite right about doing the more basic exercises for now - remember you are very early in your recovery.

Hope you are feeling ok and has it all gone as you expected so far? Take care.

Hi Dawn

TED - I had them. I was told to wear them for a month. So I wore them for 4 weeks with rationale if I'd had my surgery in February a month would have been 28 days!! I hated them. At night I used to pull the toe hole up my foot so that my toes were exposed. I was told i could have them off a couple of hours a day while they got washed.

Exercycle - my surgeon told me anytime after 2 weeks when I felt I could get on and off safely. Seat at highest, tension at lowest, just go back and forwards without pain or discomfort, then full revolution backwards first. I finally got on it at almost 3 weeks and it took a week before I could go a full revolution, but I went backwards for only 5 minutes and then could go forwards. My physio thinks the exercycle is the best thing to improve ROM.

Hope this helps.

Hi All
i had my first PT session yesterday at the out patients, a really good time and they are so nice and did not push you to hard just with in your own limits, next week they said the might increase or decrease depending how i feel in the next few days, i feel fine today it gave me a few new exercises to think about, my knee bend is 90 degrees and my knee straight is 15 so a bit of work needed on the straitening,
i also had my staples out to day so a lot has happened over the last 2 days.

Isn't that the best feeling after the intial stinging of having them out. The knee feels so much freer and just more comfortable somehow. Hope you continue in the same vein Dawni, great stuff! :friends:

Hi Dawn, I too had extension issue in the early days. It does get better as you get more mobile. The exercise Ron Gardiner promotes helps (sitting in a chair, foot on another chair or stool or bed or whatever, and let gravity do its job, and as pain allows put a little downwards pressure with you hand just above the knee). I now have a couple of other exercises from the physio but I'm now at 8 weeks post op.

Hi Dawni

Sounds like it's all going really well for - well done. The extension does take some work and Margaret is right about that exercise - it really does work, it did for me!

Dawni, Be careful of the lying on the bed on your front with your leg hanging exercise though. I tried that and it killed! It took about 10 weeks to get up to 8 minutes. 20 minutes and then adding weights was beyond comprehension! So I abandoned it and after a couple of days the aching down the back of the leg grew less.

So now I do the others - and I try to stand with my weight evenly distributed and my knees locked. My extension is pretty good now.

The physios had us on bikes from the third week.

It sounds like you're doing well, Dawni - did you give the hospital hell yet? Which one was it? - so I know which to avoid just in case I ever get referred away from home!

Dawni....it sounds like you're progressing just fine. Hang in there and be patient. Recovery can take a while and sometimes the steps forward are small. But if you look back week by week, you'll see progress!
