It's not at all uncommon to get tiny superficial infections around stitches. Happens all the time and a short course of antibiotics will soon sort it out. It's only in the top 2-3mm of skin so don't worry about it. By all means phone the surgeon's secretary if it calms you but I expected he will say the same thing. Your GP did the right thing.
For now, just keep it dry and covered with sterile dressings. Any Band Aid type will do as long as the wrapper is in good condition meaning not damaged, worn or torn.
