Dawni, are they giving you one or two Tramadol? If they are giving you only one, that's only 50mg and not enough. Tell them you want two. Two is 100mg and the usual dose. I took 100mg Tramadol+2 paracetamol for weeks.

They are giving me two of each Tramadol and Paracetamol

Hi all,
I think they have got my pain under more controll now I am far from being pain free but it is more manageable, I was doing my exercises on the bed to day and thought my tummy was making strange sounds then the same to night to discover it was my knee sort of small popping sounds is this normal also it is very tight and difficult to move sort of a thick feeling like you have put a band on it to tight ???

Dawni
You might need your husband to advocate for you - him, or the OT staff that should also be making the rounds. I know that I had a friend who stayed at the hospital during the day and she helped advocate for me when I needed it.
don't give up. Maybe tell the PT that you are in TOO MUCH PAIN to do anything and have them also help get your meds to a level that help you.
I hope things improve for you soon.

I just laid in my room and...SCREAMED. It got me the meds.
Best,
Sandy

Hi Dawni, I just wanted to check in on you today and see how you were doing and was so glad to read that they have gotten your pain to where it is more manageable now. That is very good news indeed!

Ahh yes...you have discovered the tight band feeling! Sometimes it feels like a think wide rubber band, sometimes feels like a plaster cast and sometimes it feels like a metal clamp. Some days are better than others, but for sure the swelling is doing it to you. Icing and elevating are your best friend! I can feel my band right now and I am 10 months post op...waiting, waiting, waiting for the day it goes away. Although it is MUCH better now then in the beginning, so keep the faith, it will get better for sure!! :yes 4::yes 4::yes 4:

I could scream with this hospital, right - I am an NHS patent in a private hospital, a choose and book scheme, I was told up to 5 days in, came in on Saturday so my husband made work plans around that but can't start his holiday until Friday. Any way on Tuesday they told me I will be going home that day. First I was not feeling I well nor was I confident to go home and be on my own. I told them this and they said ok you can stay the 5 days unless I was willing to pay the extra £600. Hubby is picking me up Thursday morning!

Any way to day is the day I should have been at home. I had meds at 6am and come 12md I had to go to them and get some pain meds. I was told I would not get anything else until 6pm. No-one even came in to check I was ok. It's like shut up and be good as you are not meant to be in here any way. Luckily my daughter came up and she had some paracetamol so I just took 2 of them in between. I am not a second class citizen just because I am on the NHS but have been made to feel like I am something they have trod in. I will be filling in that form, that's for sure. Not sure if I will get anywhere. But what with them not sorting out the meds etc I can't wait now to get home.

Sorry about all that Dawni. I don't understand the unwillingness to give you the pain meds because from all I've read, "they" don't want you to have any pain. I think someone had mentioned getting some to advocate for you. Maybe the hospital staff will see their way when they send you home with the right prescriptions. Wish I could take some of your pain away.

Oh Dawni I do feel for you, whatever are the hospital thinking of?? It sounds an absolute disgrace and you should definately file a complaint. Once you get home and settled you will feel much better. Make sure you have enough pain medication at home - maybe ask your husband to speak to your GP in advance so that he can collect some for you (don't forget the weekend is coming up - GP will be closed). I hope you have a good night.

Hi Dawni,

I agree with the others - make sure the hospital's powers that be know what you've been put through. I'd also let the referral agency in the NHS know as well. Just not good enough.

And the tight rubber bands - ah yes, lots of us know about those. Mine got easier and then came back, but never as tense as they were. So hang in there, it does get easier.

Good luck going home, and let hubbie run around after you.

Dawnie,

So sorry that hapened to you. It also happened in the hospital I was in and I was phoning my hubby crying and asking him to come and get me in the middle of the night. You would ring for a bedpan, and by the time it came you had wet the bed anyway as they took so long. I couldn't sleep so I tried reading until I was tired, and they kept coming and turning my light off!! I did write to the hospital, as we hardly saw any cleaning being done, and one lady had a dirty wound bandage under her bed for 3 DAYS!!! Even told a nuse about it and it still was left there!:hissyfit:

Letter to the hospital and the NHS was done as soon as I came home, and not sure if it did any good, but the venting certainly did me some good, I was so angry!!!

When you get home it will be so much better, you can make sure you are never in any pain, and start your exercises when you are ready, and very soft and slow, please give yourself some time to just rest, sleep, ice and elevate. Doing nothing for a few days does not hurt, and your knee will dictate when its had enough, and then stop!! Its a long slow recovery and thats the truth, so don't rush in with all guns blazing!

Take care Dawni. :friends:

A good post Aretha and quite agree it is a slow recovery!

I hope you are home Dawni with your feet up and having lots of tlc from hubby :thumb:

Well, to end my last night in the hospital, at 10.30pm they came in with my last meds asking me if I wanted it. I told them of course I need it and mentioned that I did not wake up at 2am the night before, they then said well that's why you have been in pain all day, because you missed your 2am pills! What I said, I did not go to bed to wake up on demand. As soon as I did wake up I asked for pills and asked 'so it was ok for you to leave me for some 8 hours in the day without giving me any pills but my fault at night'.

Anyway, my hubby came and collected me this morning to go home from the hospital. All ready to go, the nurse came in and asked if I had any meds at home. Yes, I said, why? They said because the pharmacy has not left any medication for you and it may take some 5 hours to get you some! |My God, the pharmacy is on the next floor! So I accepted going home to use my own pills. Reading my discharge letter it said that they had given me some pills,
so if I could have I would have run out of that place. But it is really nice to be home and hubby looking after me and my dogs were so pleased to see me, can't wait to be in my own bed. Thanks all for listening to me ramble on. So glad I took my ipad in with me. x

I really feel for you Dawni and it brought my own discharge and anger back to mind too, but please let me assure you that now that you are home in the loving care of your own fiends and family, its sooo good, and in a few weeks time the hospital will be just a bad memory because you will be concentrating on your own recovery, and getting on with your new life with a painfree knee.

I made a vow that I would never have a second knee done at that hospital again, and now fortunately we have moved area and it will not be necessary, yipee!!! :yay:

Put the anger behind you, and remember that its over, your new knee is in place, and its time to look forward and get on with your recovery. You won't ever regret having your knee done, and life for me is great now as it will be for you I am sure.

Looking forward to reading about your recovery Dawni. :friends:

thanks Aretha, its sad that we have to put up with this sort of treatment its happening more and more, but i have enjoyed my first day home and cant wait to be in my own bed tonight. thanks again.
Dawni

That's so unacceptable. The hospital pays good money to that hospital for them to give their patients care so it really shouldn't matter that they are not the ones footing the bill. Some of the private patients who get special deals pay a lot less than the hospital trust did for you to be there.

What you must do is to write a letter to the CEO of the NHS hospital. Don't bother filling in forms or speaking to your GP. Go to the top. Be forthright and don't 'nice' it up any, say it exactly as it was and how they made you feel.

Like the others, sorry to hear you're experiencing pain. This surgery is invasive enough without having the right pain management tools/help, etc. Hope things are getting better. I was lucky, while I was in hospital for 3 days I had femoral nerve block as well as morphine pump. I've had Tramadol, too, found that to be mild - good way to take edge off after rough PT sessions. Keep the faith. :thumb:

Sorry about all your pain and trouble in that hospital. Now that your home you will probably start to feel better. Wishing you all the comfort in the world.

I am sorry you are in pain. I know how that feels. The ladies are right, you need to get the pain meds on board! That will be one of the tools to help you to lift your leg. The muscle spasms will start to relax, just make sure they are keeping your pain under control. Everyday will be a little bit better.
