THR Cpollock Surgery June 19, 2017<

@MyAussieGirl had used glycerine suppositories for constipation. I don't have pain from it yet so I will be patient. I'm taking 2 stool softeners a day now. The Dr only sent me home with tramacet. I had 5 oxy in total at the hospital spread out over 2 days. I also had toradol in my iv a couple times a day which is an anti inflammatory.

It was about 4 or 5 days for me before I could go. I had stool softeners in hospital but did not come home with any. I ate 4 or 5 prunes, drank a glass or two of prune juice and took some milk of magnesia and that did the trick. I'm sure it was due to all of them but it worked. I may not have drank enough water during those days either but who knows now. I was ok after that but also I wasn't taking too much of the oxy - just a half tablet at a time so that probably made a difference, too. You will get there .....

@cpollock the bathroom isn't a problem any more. I had a large iced coffee from the local coffee shop and that did the trick for me yesterday. I'm sore but seem to be doing a little better. I may have over done it a little yesterday.
Best wishes
Bill

I was terribly clogged-up. The stool softeners weren't even working. I drank the MoM on my fourth night after surgery along with a liter of water ( I still hadn't gone, any!) About 8 am the next morning MoM worked and I have not had a problem since. I did take a couple of stool softeners a day until my pain dropped below the point where I needed the hydrocodone twice a day. I'm on day 22 and all systems are normal.

@MyAussieGirl I seen the tips you left for me. Thank you. I'm having a small salad and some carrot soup I had frozen that I made for supper. I have beans to try next but maybe later. I have no appetite.

Yes I've been drinking when I'm awake. Pure water. Tummy gurgles and I pass gas but that's it. See what tomorrow brings.

I had lots of problems getting regular again after surgery. I are tons of grapes... Cuz they were small, cold, wet, and I got tired if guzzling waiter. For a few days I did grapes water and soup... Plus mild laxative and stool softeners and my morning coffee which had always done the trick before. When I could finally go, all those things turned into rocks. Unbelievable! It took me too about well three and four to start becoming regular. Really is just another thing to make sure you are uncomfortable at first. Plus I had double replacement and sitting on my potty chair and hanging out trying to relax was not a good option. Hope to clears up soon. Definitely helps your outlook on life.
I wanted to have a potty party when I finally went.:yes!:

@cpollock I'm so sorry... I know how it feels many trips all night it got exhausting ...For the most part I got rid of that this last week. Last. night up twice just a tiny bit difficult to pass ... I didn't eat as well as far as fiber.

Many say the prune Juice did it for them. I too ate prunes but that didn't work for me.. I have the juice as a stand by now ...

Hugs and prayers I really do understand

This morning was tough when the symptoms of constipation hit. In the hospital they gave me colace which is a stool softener. No instructions on that when I came home. So yesterday I asked my Mom if she'd pick some up when her and Dad came to see me. She brought a no name stool softener and noticed later is expired over 2 years ago. I had taken 2 yesterday and 1 this morning. I now have good one that's not expired for tonight. I have been careful what I eat which is little. And drank lots of water but didn't pee for 3 hours this morning even with all the water. I was in and out of the bathroom for 4 hours and finally it was coming out no matter what. My poor husband through all this. At 9 he sped to town half hour away to get glycerin suppositories. That did help with about 2 inches and was a start. I've been gassy and just had a small bowel movement that wasn't so bad but now my butt burns and is so sore. I'm not sure if it's the oxy they gave me in hospital that caused this or if it's the tramacet I've been taking 2 of every 6 hours. Any thoughts? Cheryl

Wow I'm surprised they didn't give you any stool softeners on discharge. I was given Colace and Senna. Yesterday I had my first post surgery bm, followed by 3 more throughout the day. I am down to taking one Colace/day to see if that helps regulate me while I'm still taking oxy.

The painkillers don't help but my guess is alot of that is effects of the anesthesia from the surgery. I took Sennakot for more than a week along with Dulcolese... Mild laxative. I was afraid to take a more ' active' type laxative as it's not like I could RUN to the bathroom.
It took my system weeks to get right.... Not to discourage you but I used my hospital sippy cup and pilled on the water which helped some but was not fun getting up to pee so much.
It doesn't help much, but I do sympathize. I remember how happy I was every time I finally did have a bowel movement and am sure stressing over it didn't help.
Hope you find some relief.

Oh yes.... After reading other suggestions, I remember my better half made bean soup and ate on that for a few days. It helped alot.

@cpollock have you read the article here on BS for constipation. I'd put up the link but don't know how.
