THR Cpollock Surgery June 19, 2017<

Cpollock your evening sounds a lot like mine ...ice, movie....soon I'm off to shower... I am OK thank you
I will know much better late Friday as I see my OS on Thursday and lots of blood work due in. The blood work from another doctor.

@MyAussieGirl I hope your blood work comes back good and your OS appointment also goes well. I don't see my OS til August 2nd which will be 6 weeks. I go to physio next Tuesday and get my staples out by the nurse that runs the hip clinic.

Thank you CPollock I appreciate that I really need this to go well

My first appointment after surgery was 2 weeks out I think ...my stitches didn't need removing I think they dissolved.... I had a strip of some odd tape to remove a week or two later ....Every doctor does it differently as you know..... I am so happy for you you're on the road to well ...hugs

I had my first bathroom accident, my poor husband. It's so demeaning. Gary doesn't complain and is by my side doing whatever needs doing. What a blessing he is. He's heading to town for a few groceries after he fixes me something to eat. I made a list.
I tried sleeping on my good side last night with pillow in front and behind and between my legs. I took the strain off my low back for a much needed break. I ended up having to go on my bag after an hour or so with my leg elevated. I got the best sleep with only getting up 2 times. Sure need to pee lots, hehe.... but that is a little less.
What a difference some sleep makes. I hope everyone else is making progress as well. cheryl

Hoping your recovery continues to go well. I had an accident in the hospital and it was bad. To make it worse, a teenaged boy came up to clean it and he was muttering about how gross it was. So embarrassing! (The nurses were very sympathetic and comforting.)

@kayak59 yes, embarrassing is the understatement, hehe. I hope your recovery is coming along, baby steps we go.

My husband was gone only 15 minutes this morning when I had both reacher tools on the floor along with my ice pack. I have a bit of diarrhea which is thankfully slowing down. Nothing else to complain about. I have come a long ways since getting home from the hospital a week ago today. I'm very you happy about the progress I'm making.

HI friends. Today's 10 days post op and making progress. I have some incision pain, I think from the staples starting to pull. I'm still managing OK on Tylenol for discomfort. My leg is still bowed out at the knee like it has been the last year but efore surgery. Anyone else have a crooked leg from the arthritis before surgery? I go to physio of Tuesday so I'm hoping it's something that can be corrected.
Hope you're all recovering well. Baby steps forward. Cheryl

Aww CPollock sorry on the accident it really is hard to take those things without being embarrassed..... I had one small issue and um it didn't leave my panties.... I sneak cleaned it on my own.... I hope you continue to improve days are up or down it seemed at least they were for me .... I have some updates on my page I haven't been on much but had to check be on you and undate

@cpollock when will they remove the staples? They used glue on me. Are you using a walker still? I tried crutches but I feel more comfortable with the walker for now. I can now lift the leg up on a foot rest without an aid. How about you?
Best wishes
Bill

@Gone again my staples will be removed on Tuesday July 4th. I'm using a wheeled walker with the tennis balls which are the most stable. I've been told to use this for 6 weeks but we will see what physio thinks. I don't see the surgeon til august 2nd and that's just over 6 weeks. And I can lift my leg a bit more each day and up on a foot rest too. Baby steps.... you sound good. Cheryl

Today ends day 11 post op and am doing OK. I have some itching by the incision. I'm continuing the ankle pumps and butt clenches. I started heel slides yesterday with husbands gentle assistance and that's good. I was supposed to do them sooner but wasn't ready til yesterday.i will see what physio adds on Tuesday and will also have my staples removed then too.

@Josephine I have a concern I would appreciate your opinion on. My operated leg seems a little bowed out at the knee yet. It's been like that for probably a year and I'm sure it's from the heavy limping get and awful gait. Is this something you have heard of before? I've used a cane for the last year and have been afflicted with osteoarthritis for 8 years. The last couple years is more the moderate than severe stage.

Happy healing to all my bonesmart friends. Cheryl

11 days you're doing great. You sound much more positive too.... I am not sure if Josephine has a holiday where she lives or not.... I will be here a bit but it's a long holiday weekend...week too really

It's a holiday here too for Canada day July 1st. My son Myles was born on the USA holiday July 4th. Are you going to partake in any activity Celebrations? I will pass this year. I won't be venturing out til my physio on Tuesday.

No it's not good!
1. Hips don't need exercising - AT. ALL. Just normal walking. For that you need to read your recovery articles again in post #39. The ones I am particularly referring to are this Activity progression for THRs and the BIG TIP at the end.
2. Heel slides are a knee exercise and totally unnecessary and inappropriate for a hip.

My operated leg seems a little bowed out at the knee yet.
How about sending me a photo of it. I would need a shot that shows both legs, waist to floor, like this

The red dots mark the centre point of your legs at ankle, knee and hip - though the hip is just a guestimate! In a straight, healthy leg, the yellow line is supposed to go through all three red dots.

Yours don't so this shows is a knock kneed deformity called valgus, is usually characteristic of arthritic knees.

So I need to ask you if you have any pain in your knees. But whether you do or not, they need to be investigated at some stage.

@cpollock , same thing happened to my knees. I was born with fairly straight legs and as the hip OA progressed in severity, I noticed my knees started to cave in which was when I knew something was seriously wrong. I do not have knee pain but do have occcasional IT band pain outside the knee since first thr almost a year ago.

I thought knock knees syndrome was from my legs adjusting to badly worn out hips. I pointed it out to OS before and after thrs. I had post op LLD that OS first attributed to the knock knees as legs were crooked not straight which affected leg length. Happily LLD resolved itself but knees have not. He looked at the knees during surgery via fluoroscope and said they look great. It's been nearly a year since the first thr and noticed only a small improvement in the knees.

@Josephine , do valgus knees always lead to knee OA even if you were born with straight legs? Would PT help straighten them out or would that aggravate the knees? Alignment seems to have settled and don't want affect leg length. (you can move the post to my thread but thought it might be relevant for cpollock.)

Valgus deformity are usually caused by something like arthritis. The arthritis wears away part of the tibia so the joint is collapsed. Though sometimes children are born with valgus/varus deformities but even then they are usually as a result of deformity in either the femur or tibia or both.
Would PT help straighten them out
It depends what the cause is. If it's soft tissue (ligaments or muscles) then maybe but if it's bone, it won't.

Thank you @Josephine you are a very smart lady. I never noticed the owing out til about a year ago in the left leg. When I sit with feet flat on the floor and align my feet evenly, I can't see my right foot but I can see the left one. I sure hope it's muscle or ligament issues from limping. I never noticed this previously. Is it best to concentrate on walking heel to toe with each step for now. I don't have knee pain, I did have some prior to the surgery off and on. My right leg feels fine, it's just the left operated leg that's awkward. Especially now that I can walk without that bone on bone pain. Thank you again for your insights.
@Horseshoe looks like we have this in common. How long have you noticed you have this Issue?
