THR Cpollock Surgery June 19, 2017<

It would be very difficult to apply self massage as it is deep in the abdomen and most easily accessed by lying flat with the knees up. My chiropractor did my for me. He was/is a wizz at it!

Okay, if it persists I may have to check it out @Josephine. I'm hoping that part was exercise induced, wait and see. I used to have a chiropractic treatment before my OA diagnosis about 8 years ago where my leg would be bent and pulled to the left and the other guy would dig his fingers into the left side area. It hurt like crazy and was even a little bruised after. It was done by chiropractors at a sports medicine office.

So sorry you're having this setback, Cheryl. At least in knowing what it is, and what may have caused it, you can now modify.
Personally, I don't like those clam shells. I told my PT I didn't like them and wasn't doing them.
I hope the icing, elevation and pain meds help you recover soon.
Wishing you a restful evening! @cpollock

Thank you @Layla I'm pretty much done PT anyways, I go on August 22nd for my final appointment. I won't be continuing but need to get released now to make my surgeon happy. I see him on the 25th. I hope this pain starts to settle soon, the meds are helping some at least. I hope you're doing well. Cheryl

Cheryl, I may have mentioned this before but my OS told me the same thing as Josephine has said - we don't need PT for hips to heal. He did give me a script for PT but when I went for my 2 month check, I mentioned I was stiff after sitting for a few minutes. I asked if it was from PT or just part of healing. He said it was part of healing and I didn't need the PT so I never went back again. I know I should walk more than I do but I am very active around the house with housework, gardening, etc, and I just have not had the pains so many others have experienced. Plus I'm still getting my ROM back. My OS said everything will just keep getting better and better and I can see he is right. We all feel like we need to do our part to work on our recovery but it appears to me that our part is to just take care of ourselves with good eating and plenty of rest and our body will handle the rest just fine. It will be interesting to see how you feel after a couple weeks without all those exercises and just the walking. I bet your recovery will speed up a bit once your body doesn't have to overcome all the extra created from the exercises. Keep us posted.

Thank you @GrannyC and yes you've mentioned this before and I read the article on PT. I had a flare up listening to PT in the past about 4 weeks in. I'm a little slower in recovery than I should be I guess. The guy at my PT assessment said this isn't the norm and I should be able to be walking without a limp. This was at 7 weeks in. He gave me the straight raises and clam shells to do and said these will strengthen the gluteus and I will be able to walk normally. I listened and tried my best and ended up after a few days that I was in so much pain and couldn't get around very well. I believe everyone is different and should be assessed accordingly. I don't mind the simple exercises that I have been doing but won't be doing anything aggressive at this point. I did sleep a little better last night and feel some improvement this morning but it will be another day of pain meds. Everyone please be careful of PT and listen to your body. I'm going to try walking around today but that's it. I wish you all well. Cheryl

Cheryl @cpollock I think you are making a good choice to take it easy now! You have plenty of time after the healing is much more accomplished, to work on your gait. I agree strongly with you that everybody is different, every hip is different, and should not be subjected to some arbitrary timetable. Your body will give you a good gait when it's ready!

I found that my gait slowly improved while I was walking. I stopped all the little PT exercises after a couple of weeks because I figured picking up little chores around the house was the equivalent of them. Also, I was able to swiffer while in my walker! That's not nearly as difficult as vacuuming, and picks up a huge amount of what you want to pick up.

@GrannyC I love seeing your posts all round! They make me smile, as you are so clearly doing "the right recovery thing" :smile2:

@zauberflöte I totally agree everyone is different and every recovery is vastly different. I guess I was trying to confirm that Josephine isn't the only one with those recommendations and that they have worked well for me. I also agree with you that the strength and other issues can be worked on once the hip is well healed. I do think we have to work on our gait as much as we can as we recover because during that time, we have the time to devote on concentrating on the gait. Once we are more healed, we are busier and it is much easier to forget about our gait most of the time. I didn't mean to emphasize that I was being goody, goody doing the right thing - only that the no exercise issue worked for me.

I'm definitely on the same page as both you @zauberflöte and @GrannyC and thank you for your support. The bottom line is listen to our bodies. I haven't seen my OS since I was discharged from the hospital on day 2. I had an OS appointments but there was a mixup and it wasn't with my surgeon. So, I see my OS on August 25th. I will be able to get more clarity and answers to the questions the other OS couldn't answer. Today will be a good day I'm thinking. I wish you all well. Cheryl

So so sorry Cheryl...your love & support for your son and his wife is all you can do now....I am so sorry you and your families have to go thru this pain...we just don't have any answers sometimes...it doesn't matter how old our children get...somehow they always need us and know we will be there unconditionally...my daughter in law was due on Friday and the baby heartbeat dropped...2nd stress test today is ok..watching her...just that knocked me for a worrying loop...prayers & supportive thoughts to you and your families...so sorry my friend....

Sorry on the pain @cpollock you know you're in my be prayers. I did the clam thing but never had issues with it...still I was very fit muscle wise going into that surgery...my next one I'm not as I can walk and swim but don't have much muscle building anymore. Glad you only have 1 pt left

I am still checking on you and very worried. I MUST SAY I DON'T KNOW how long I can be on my puter and its the only way I can really see the forums now. I do not have access to it often as I doi not buy much data for it. I hope they roll back the cell phone version I just can't see much and stretching it leaves it harder to read. I like the changes but need a tablet.....mega prayers

Thinking of you Cheryl @cpollock and sending prayers.
You've been a little quiet.....hoping all is okay.

Cheryl @cpollock adding my prayers. I hope that the "process" went as well as possible. I hope your hip is doing well, also. I know that life can affect the way we heal.

Agree with @GrannyC that sometimes things just don't need to be aggravated. I've had the piraformis issue ongoing after some PT ...and it gets better and worse so haven't really figured what is aggravating it or helping it.
When I get too fixated on my post op issues, I remember the chronic pain prior to surgery and how restricted I'd become, and MISERABLE.
Hope things get better soon.

Thank you to everyone on here that offered such kind comments. I won't list you all as it would be multiple tagging but I appreciate you all very much. My daughter in law is okay, the process is complete now.
I've been spending a lot of time at my Mom's off and on. And I had my husband to walk in on Wednesday too. His rheumatoid arthritis has really flared, good thing he has an appointment in Calgary to see the rheumatologist on the 29th. The doctors here can not do anything for him. He was having issues so they changed his biomedical meds to a stronger one and they probably will again. I make sure he has what he needs then go see my mom who sees a specialist out of town September 11th. I got rooms booked now, we will go the day before. I'm still healing myself but at least I'm able and that pain stopped now that I quit the exercises. I'm still using the cane and improving a little each day and hope it won't be long til I can walk without a limp. My Dad and brother are going camping on Monday so I'm staying at my mom's til Wednesday so she's not alone. Also Wednesday she has an appointment at our hospital for a cardiolight test that takes 5 hours. We will go for a nice lunch after and then I'll come home. So this is what has been and what will be going on with me. Good I'm off til September 6th yet. Thank you all for thinking of me. I wish you all well. Cheryl

Yes, I agree with Gone again that you do have a lot going on! It's so great to hear from you though and know that you're alright but just busy, busy, busy.

Take care of yourself in the midst of all this as you're still in recovery yourself. I guess I didn't need to remind you of that, lol!

Wishing you a great weekend, Cheryl @cpollock
