THR Chappyd's recovery story

Have you tried taking Tylenol for any pain? That's acceptable to my OS and I use extra strength. The job situation is always such.......well, another type of pain entirely. Hopefully in your remaining time off you'll have time to consider all of your options although it's always hard when it comes to an actual change! :puppysmooze:

I have tried Tylenol, but it doesn't seem to really help. It's not that bad really, and I'll just keep on icing while watching TV in the evenings- That's definitely my dog - she just has to lick my face!! :spin:

@Chappyd Don't tell anybody (lol) but I still take Aleve and alternate with Tylenol--------I think it's best not to over do it but I definitely take 2 at bedtime. I have for years but everyone's different on this subject!

@SE Florida I can't speak for everyone, but as someone only 3 weeks out from surgery, i am on aspirin twice a day and was told by my OS to not take anything like Advil or Aleve until the aspirin regimen is over. Chappyd and I have the same surgery date, so may be too soon to introduce those meds.

@Chappyd I so understand where you are coming from. I normally only used Tylenol for headaches and used the Aleve for the body aches, which seemed to work well. Unfortunately as I've said, I was fed way too much of this stuff and it caused me issues I have to watch from now on. There are seriously days that I think, just two Aleve, what could it hurt? Or one of my old muscle relaxers!

I'm having these issues before surgery, ought to be great after! :heehee:

I am learning to use the Tylenol much more now and trying to get that build up in my system and coordinate it with my low dose Tramadol to try and at least take the edge off. Hopefully they stop stressing you from the job, I totally get that one too! :kittykiss:(I'm a cat person if y'all haven't figured that out)

Happy Monday!
Let us know how PT goes. Please don't do anything that hurts. ODIC is no fun, I've heard.
A great week to you!
@Chappyd

Yep, those were my instructions as well. I have 6 weeks worth of aspirin Doh! (well only 3 left) Today I actually feel pretty good. We took the dogs on a leisurely walk around our lower lot, about a 1/2 mile. I did use my cane. It's the first time I've been down there since last year! I spent a lot of time down there last summer, making a little MX track and leveling the land enough so I could cut the grass. with all the rain we've had it needs some TLC pretty badly, but not for a while yet.

Not yet...but man oh man will you hit the ground "walking really fast" when you get this behind you.
Walking without hip pain, well, it is simply fabulous!
All of these grand aspirations, of which I should never want to squelch, but for me...Sleeping ..walking without pain, being happy :happydance:- not tired, stressed and hurting...these are the major victories!:yes!:

Howdy SE Florida! Things are going well thanks for asking. I like my PT, going 3 times a week. I'm generally keeping busy, in the shop tinkering with my motorcycles, lawn mowers and such. Yesterday was a beautiful day here in Connecticut. Today not so much. So yesterday I did a lot, and today took it easy. I still have a good bit of soreness in the thigh, and tightness too. Plus the stamina, I think I will be back to work after six weeks. We'll see what the doc has to say, I'm hoping to do a couple of weeks of part time. Eventually I will be back at it! Hope all is well with you too!

I can't help but think back to your first posts with the pre-surgery jitters and yet here you are doing all of the things that you haven't been able to do for so long. It's a wonderful thing to get our lives back! It sounds like you're doing really well for the 4 week mark.........and Happy Anniversary a couple of days early! Your stamina will return and hopefully you can start back part-time to build it up even more! Happy to hear from you, have a great week!

Hi @Chappyd
Happy One Month Anniversary to you!
You seem to be doing so well, engaging in the things you love and living life.
I hope you're still able to take time to get the rest you need. Still months of healing to go, as you know.
I'm sure you've read it's advised you take more time off work than six weeks, but it's also understood that's not possible for everyone. It's good you're able to do a phased rerun. That should help.
Following is an article on a Phased Return to Work in case you haven't read it -

I hope you have a great day. Happy Wednesday!

How are you, haven't heard you around lately? Hopefully you're just busy with life.

As a matter of fact, I am!! And SE, I took my dog for our first real walk since last year yesterday! Yesterday was also my second follow up visit, and the first time I have seen the surgeon since the operation. He gave us all A's. (The team of myself, my wife and of course him as the surgeon, lol) I can't say enough good things about my Surgeon. I have all the confidence in the world in him and his team. If I have to do the other hip, I hope he is still working. :)

It's funny, last weekend I was still able to reach the point of overdoing it and wanting the ice and my chair. I've been motoring all over the house and yard, riding the lawnmower, even did some weed wacking. As of Monday, I went to PT in the morning and I just felt better, nothing in particular, just an overall sense. Breezed through that, and kept myself busy with things in the shop and house and I just seemed to be able to keep going. That evening, I felt fine. Same for Tuesday and yesterday. Tuesday I was bad - I brought my dirtbike to DMV to get it inspected so I could get it registered. At one point I felt I was pushing it, I had to park far away and walk into the building, down a long hall, up and down stairs and then of course, back out. But no real pain anymore, just a bunch of stiffness. (By the way, I have not ridden the motorcycle at all, and won't for some time. It's just that getting it inspected and registered is a real process here, and wanted to get it done while I had the time away from work.)
So yesterday, I did PT early, the Dr's visit just before noon and had lunch out. When we got home, I said to my wife I want to walk the dogs. So we leashed them up and of course they are going nuts because it's been a good 8 months now. So we went down the hill and walked on the rails to trails section behind the house. Only went about a mile, still want to be cautious about getting too far away and having it be too much. My bigger dog, Kayla, is a real puller. She's still young and full of it. She was getting better about the pulling before we stopped walking, so I have some work to do with her. Last night, no issues. I was walking around in my shop remembering how before the operation I would be limping all over the place and wincing everytime the bones lined up just right.
.:wowspring: This is amazing!

Oh, and my return to work- The doc left it up to me- 6,7, or 8 weeks off? He doesn't do a phased return, so I opted for 7 weeks. I spoke to the people at work and I will come in next week and visit for a while. I need to spend some time catching up on stuff because my boss will be out when I go back .

It has been an adventure (right @59billy?) I'm so very glad I didn't wait any longer to go ahead and get it done. In the Doc's office we were looking at the before and after xrays of the joint, and boy it really was shot! The new one looks weird, all that metal. But you know what? If I didn't know anything about it, and there were no xrays to look at, I would just think that he fixed what I had. It honestly feels/works just like the old one did, or should I say like a normal hip should feel.

I'm thankful to have found Bonesmart and to have had the support and camaraderie of fellow hipsters- those going through this at the same time, and the vets who hang around to tell us good times are coming.

I know this isn't over for me yet, but I am definitely getting there. There is definitely a bunch of stiffness, and it is a little tender where the incision was and still a knot/hard area (scar tissue maybe, or just continual healing) but it's not slowing me down much. My next follow up isn't until 8/9. I'll check in from time to time to see how you all are doing.
Thanks!!!:dogwalk: <--- This IS my dog, lol.

What a great update!! I think April 15th was a lucky day for us, huh??!

Yes it was!!
:dancy:

I just looked back at the April list and saw a new name, so there were 5 of us! I only saw a post or 2 from Wayner1, and that was on the pre-op side- I wonder how the rest are doing now?? Hopefully they are too busy to post....:what:

I was just re-reading my update post. I used the term "no issues".. I thought maybe I should clarify- I'm not ready to run a marathon just yet, lol. Think of comments like these as relative to where I was a month ago. I still walk slowly, kind of a determined, careful type walking. Getting down on the ground and back up again is slow ( I tinker with stuff, lawn mower, dirtbike, etc) I'm sure I could find the limits to overdoing it, but I would have to work at it.
Life is very good...

@Chappyd
WOW! You're crushing this recovery. I'm a week behind you tax day folks, but it feels like a month! I remember my first THR 6 years ago, I was cruising like you are.

Take good care of that chunk of metal in your leg. Hopefully we all can go years without having to do it again. I'm on my second re-build on this right hip so I have to take it a bit easier this time.

You are getting back into the things you enjoy; dirt bike, tinkering, dog walking, etc. that you couldn't do easily or at all six months ago. These things are life changers!
