THR Chappyd's recovery story

I'm taking a few days off with NO exercise other than walking, then I'll go pay the local PT people a visit.

How are you feeling today @Chappyd ? I really liked your post saying you were going to stop the PT for a few days and just focus on walking. The walking will really expedite your recovery more than you would think. And with a lot less pain too. I still ice occasionally at night.....it's my new security blanket! Gotta remember to add a puppy for you :doggie:

Is no news good news @Chappyd ? I hope the rest and walking is doing the body good! :thumb:

No news is kinda good news. I was busy anyways yesterday, went for lunch with a friend, DROVE to the grocery store and spent an hour or so shopping. Lets say I've been testing the limits.
:good-bad:

And yes I was successful in finding them! Last night went on the ice around 5, and going to bed I was definitely in the non-comfort zone. Finally did get to sleep and woke up feeling better. Definitely cranked down the activity level for today, although I did drive to the PT place I will start going to on Monday. They wanted to schedule me for this afternoon, but I didn't want to drive out again. It's going to be a lousy weekend here one just made for movies, and maybe a little ice? Advil does really seem to take the edge off nicely.

:ice:

Sounds like yesterday was a little painful.........take it easy now! Glad to see your update. Lousy weather weekend definitely calls for movies, ice and Advil!

I actually tied my new sneakers on my right foot today! It was pretty feeble, but I did it! after my first after op visit, she lifted all precautions except turning the hip inwards. I can bend past 90 degrees, and cross my legs!! I am sitting a lot, and starting movies early !!:loll::ice:

Good for you, all great news. The sneakers are one of the hardest to get used to, for me anyway. Of course I can't cross my legs yet either! :tada:

Nurse Josephine told me early on in my recovery Tylenol was a better choice.
I am constantly reading confirmations through research that NSAIDS are not a good choice for recovering hip patients.

FYI - an excerpt:

Postoperative drugs
Painkillers are frequently used by patients with hip osteoarthritis. In our experience, most of these drugs are represented by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs are the least safe of painkillers in terms of osseointegration. NSAIDs impair the osseointegration process of titanium implants by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2. This results in decreased levels of prostaglandins, which are important in promoting inflammation and supply of bone-formation cells. Therefore, we suggest choosing acetaminophen (paracetamol) for mild to moderate pain and opioids for severe pain in patients following total hip replacement.

I avoided them for a bit as I really liked ibuprofen for pain relief...or Aleve.

By the by, great to hear you tied your shoes.
And restrictions lifted!
Onward and upward...:egypdance:

My consultant let me take ibuprofen at my 6 weeks check up, but looking back I realised it helped with the pain/inflammation from the unoperated hip. Didn't feel the need for it when both were done, just codeine at first with paracetamol. It can cause internal bleeding allegedly.

And another reason to avoid NSAIDs is they do a number on your kidneys. If you do them once in a great while might not be too bad but was given them in mass quantities for years to treat my arthritis and DJD/DDD and am paying for it now. See the kidney doc every few .months to check my kidney function, absolutely not allowed to take them or any type of muscle relaxers anymore. Just my experience.

I messaged my Dr's office asking about the subject. I didn't get much narcotics, probably could have if I had asked. I feel a pain on the outside of my leg, just under the incision that makes me limp. The ibuprofen helps a lot, while the acetaminophen doesn't seem to even take the edge off. In any case I will keep it to a minimum until I hear back from the doc.

I had a bout of kidney issues back 2012. I had about 12 stones, and one of them measured 20 mm. I had 3 separate surgeries in a 3 month span. For somereason I felt no pain at all until the surgery, then just from that. Changed my diet significantly then, gave up processed food. Seems like it worked .

:fingersx:

I seem to be a kidney stone factory! Have had them removed from both kidneys once and they were back within a year. We have a deal, as long as they don't move around and try to come out, I won't mess with them! :snork:

Unfortunately I also have chronic kidney disease (well under control) from the Army giving me M&Ms, I mean motrin and ibuprofen in mass quantities. :) :-) (:

I certainly didn't mean to make you anxious about your meds, but I just felt extra cautious and protective first months post op.
Tended to always err on the side of caution...
I certainly hope these are my Forever Hips and wanted to let that healing happen the best way possible so I could get on with my life.
Hope you are having a peaceful Sunday!

So 3 weeks today!! Over the weekend I took it easy to try to give the hip a break. (figuratively!) The Dr's office got back to me- no ibuprofen until I'm 6 weeks out. So I will just try to make do with ice, rest and the exercises I got from PT today. Pretty low key so it should be ok. I drove myself. My wife thought she should drive me but I told I was fine. Since it's only 10 minutes away on back roads. Any longer and I'd let her.

Starting to suspect my boss is getting a little off about me being out of work still. Last Friday he kinda was a little snippy when I asked about a toolbox they had ordered for me. This morning I get an email thanking me for some quoting work I did last Friday, and also asking if I'm feeling better. I replied with the truth, how I may have overdone it and how easily that can happen, and no response.

My next follow up is at 5 weeks out, the 22nd. I'm on the calendar at work for 6 weeks now, though I stressed to them it would be 6-8 weeks. I'll have that discussion with my Dr. when I see him.

If this had happened a few years down the road from now, perhaps I could have just stopped working. Lots of time to think about things now....

Hello
I'm sorry you're dealing with the added stress of pressure from work and no empathy for the fact that you experienced major surgery a mere 3 weeks ago. Happy Three Week Anniversary, by the way.
I hope you have a peaceful, relaxing week as you continue healing.
@Chappyd

Have you tried taking Tylenol for any pain? That's acceptable to my OS and I use extra strength. The job situation is always such.......well, another type of pain entirely. Hopefully in your remaining time off you'll have time to consider all of your options although it's always hard when it comes to an actual change! :puppysmooze:

Happy 3 weeks, Chappy.:egypdance:
It's all going to get better and better...just incrementally!
Glad you are willing to stand your ground (literally and figuratively)!
It does seem slow but you did have a new ball joint and tie rod installed...and this new hip will serve you well.
Hope you have a peaceful week.
