I am from Australia, so different situation and as you can see by my signature, my immediate recovery was different!

I had the choice to go into rehab at the hospital, but after already 11 days, 6 in ICU, 1 in HDU and then 4 in my room.. and as I was off walking around the place using my walker, I decided time to go home..

I have no regrets. I always knew that having waited 8 years from the first time THR was mentioned and spending 2 years draped over a walker, I made a pack with myself that 24 months would be my timeframe for full recovery, but I already had the 'forgotten hip' at 7 months!

I even went back to a stressful, professional job at 7 weeks.. Slow and steady was my key and I trusted Jo when she said 'hips have a way of working out for themselves' and my OS said .. Just walk!

Liveringer, I have stairs, lots... But I will have no hubby on the 5th day after surgery for 2 days, which makes it a litte complicated, I have no idea if its conceivable whether I'll manage, I don't know how weak or unbalanced I will be assuming everything runs smoothly.... I have kids but they have babies and would hate to ask them to uproot, hence I'm thinking about inpatient rehab .... I also don't know what that really means, sounds like being back in school and staying in a hostel :headbang:

Poppet, Omg! Just reading your reply makes me feel that I have no problems! You are amazing!

TennisNut It may be in your best interest to go to rehab but that is a decision that can be made either way. The good about it is you'll have PT twice a day (assuming) by a therapist, by the time you arrive home you definately be ready for it.

Liveringer, Karen I read your thread from first to last and you're journey and state of mind is something to aspire to. Thanks for the information and updates, the road ahead is not so dark and scary anymore

TennisNut I'm going to tag Maeve , who stayed in a super exclusive (well, it looked like Club Med to me!!!) inpatient rehab. She can give you the scoop on hers. OTOH, she's not in US...
I will be "spouse-free" for 2-3 days late in the second week, if I'm doing well. He is the owner, so can make the call whether to stay or go to work... lucky me :)

TennisNut, stopping by to say "Hi!" and to tell you that I love your new avatar!

Hi@TennisNut,
As zauberflöte has noted, I did choose to a rehab facility . It was a specialist unit attached to the Private Hospital where I had the surgery. I transferred there after 2 days in a surgical ward. It was a good thing for me to do. Had a nice room, good food, good medical oversight and 2x1 hour sessions of Pat every day. The schedule varied but usually AM gym and PM hydro...which I loved. So easy to be onsite...no travel to and fro. Could just go back to my room for a shower in my specially adapted bathroom and wait for morning or afternoon tea. Easy!
I also live locally so my husband was able to come over each morning before the first session and bring me the daily paper and a long black coffee. Then he would be back in the evening and we could chat and do the crossword . It was worry free.
Nurses brought a fluffy robe before hydro and accompanied you to the pool if necessary. Towels supplied for after. Quite seamless.
Also had close women friends who all lived nearby bring coffees and pastries. I just emailed my next day's schedule each night so visit times could be planned around their busy social schedules.
If I had nor stayed I would have needed to come daily and the gym/ hydro would be back to back....a bit too much in the early healing days. Also the hassle of getting there, getting home.
So it worked for me. I stayed 11 days. That was enough, I was ready for home
Now I am doing day rehab Wed and Fri for x4 weeks. The back to back is not ideal but the hydro is worth it all.
Should mention it has not all been a breeze as I had my muscles lengthened to give me leg length - Congenital hip dysplasia sufferer!
Lots of hard work. My health fund covered all costs and it was a very nice facility close to home so it seemed silly not to do it!

Just catching up with your thread. You mentioned concern about being alone early in your recovery. Please don't worry - you won't need lots of attention! They will teach you everything you need to know before you leave hospital. A bit of preparation like putting things you use on a daily basis within reach, getting a grabber (or two) - you will be fine. I was alone all day post-op and really had no problems.

Jaycey, thanks for the input, I feel like I'm going to be fine, but it's my dearest hubby, he is worried and will have absolutely no peace of mind, he unfortunately has a business trip to Germany, I'm hoping that if I get released from hospital in 2 days, that in the 3 days prior to him leaving i will be pretty stable and self sufficient, it's all a question of knowledge and information gathering :)
Have a sunshine day!

zauberflöte, thanks buddy for the tag to Maeve, the information is great to have, yes Maeve it certainly sounds as if your choice was a no-brainer! I doubt the rehab facilities on my insurance list will be in your league! I am trying really hard to keep on exercising so that my muscle memory will bounce back - dunno if it actually does.... My issue is also nowhere near the severity of yours, so I think I'm going to be fine, I will still go check it out just so I am informed in case it does come up

TennisNut If you have a friend or neighbor who can stop by maybe once a day for the first few days your husband is gone it will help you gain confidence. It's a good idea to have someone in the house when you are showering or to help you reach for something that is out of range. If you can't have someone there - be sure and keep a mobile phone handy so you can call for help if needed.

Jaycey, thanks! That's a great tip, I'm trying real hard to swim everyday and tread water to keep flexible! I'm ready for my new beginning! :)
