I'm so glad pear juice works for me, don't think I could do prune juice (warm? YUK)

Yeah, it's truly debilitating, I took double dose of tramadol this afternoon as I was at the end of my tether, pain has lifted or with the narcotics... I just don't care :) I'll take the ibu tonight and hopefully I'll sleep, tomorrow is another day and when I go out to get the prunes I might stop at the GP, although I truly don't think anything is going to work, I hate ths drugged feeling. :skep:

I just want to draw your attention to Josephine's Bonesmart non-narcotic pain cocktail. A lot of people swear by it but you have to take the suggested dosage of both tylenol and ibuprofen or it doesn't work. I didn't have a problem with narcotics (took for 8 months) or gradually weaning off... there is no fear of addiction when you are in severe, real pain from arthritis. You won't need narcotics after about 6-8 weeks post surgery, maybe even earlier. This makes a decent transition, especially if you feel bothered by the effects of narcotics. The key is to use what works and stay ahead of the pain, if at all possible. Vicki

Vida you are my hero, I'm trying the cocktail regime tomorrow. This drugged feeling of tramadol is horrid, I kow I must move but the pain stopped me in my tracks today, what a great bunch of people here, I wish I found this place in 2008 when everything started!
Thanks for all the help and support so far, I'm truly grateful :thankyou:

Hi TennisNut, this is a truly amazing site isn't it, all your questions answered and everyone is sooooo friendly!! :friends:
I had my RTHR done almost 6 weeks ago and it feels wonderful but unfortunately I have a bad left hip too!! I see my surgeon on Friday and we will talk dates for my number 2 hip, fingers crossed he can fit me in, end of May beginning of June. I'm still taking strong pain killers but they're for the hip that needs to be replaced, nothing really touches the pain and it does sometimes drag you down doesn't it. My new hip is wonderful and I just wished I'd known twelve months ago what I know now!! It will be the very best thing you can do, believe me!! :)

Awesome! I am in an extremely fortunate position where it's only my left hip! Fingers crossed that it all appends in may :) I cannot wait to want to go to gym! (Never thought these words wold come out of my mouth!)

TennisNut Sally welcome to the BS and everyone is correct it is a great site. You will feel great after the operation. If I am not mistaken you have a surgery buddy in @zauberflötes. May is almost here and your pain is about to come to an end. We'll all still be here as you recover, answer questions, offer advice and even throw some jokes here and there.

Hi TennisNut, the pain meds merry go round is awful. It can take time to find the combination that gets the pain bearable. See your GP and keep trying. I couldnt take tramadol it made me feel sick and dizzy and didnt take any pain away. I just had my second hip replaced and I can highly recomend it
Barbara

TennisNut, looks like you're been given some really good advice. The bone on bone pain won't go away until you have the surgery but before surgery for me I took Norco, it's the same as Vicodin that helped. That is a prescription med that I was able to take right up to surgery. Good luck, keep reading and posting on here.

Thx for the suggestions! I do find some relief for that pain in my lower half of my leg (below my knee) it sort of feels like it's being suffocated or a band is strangling it...... By using a electrical nerve stimulating machine, even if it just 'fools' my brain , it's worth the relief. Does anybody else have this weird pain in their shin on the same side as the damaged hip?

Yes me TennisNut!!! Most of my pain in my unoperated leg, is below my knee down into my shin! is it a tens machine you use and where do you stick the pads?

Yessss! I'm so glad to read that I'm not the only weird one :) Yes I'm using a tens machine and I put the pad above my knee and right below the kneecap where it hurts (it has a kind of tendinitis-like) pain, but as I'm sure it happens with you, the pain shifts, so I just move the pad around until I don't feel that horrid pain anymore, I use the other two on the side of my hip and on the front of my quad where I have this huge ball/knot... Hope it helps !

TennisNut surgery buddy! I have pain all over the darn leg, only thing that hasn't hurt yet is my ankles and feet. And my leg goes up above my waist, for pain purposes....
Here in the US we can't take but 3000mg of tylenol per day any more-- that's nine 325mg pills, the old fashioned kind that there aren't very many of in the drug store any more. I take all nine, in 4 doses, with the 3-pill dose at about 4:30am. Using tylenol has allowed me to back way off the ibuprofen, which really surprised me! I was taking 12 of those a day, I now take 8. And one 50mg tramadol most afternoons unless i need to drive.
I don't own a TENS machine, but I swear by KT Tape for my S-I joint.... see how it works here

zauberflöte, good to hear from you! Thanks for the link to KT, I don't know why I never thought of that, I used the tape extensively when I was still playing tennis and it did help a lot, I'm going to try it again, as for the meds, I still find that absolutely nothing relieves the pressure on my leg, and that continuous burning in the heel, I get the tightness towards the outside of my ankle, thank goodness the pain does not radiate into my waist, that's horrible! Have a sunshine day! Counting down to a brand new hip :)

Poppet I cannot wait! Very anxious and a little afraid which I guess is normal

I'm wondering about rehab, which is better inpatient or outpatient (let's say its up to the patient to decide...)

Absolutely, you wouldn't be normal if you didn't have some degree of nervousness or anxiety. It is major surgery however, it is very successful surgery... Just focus on 'slow and steady and that recovery from a THR is a marathon, not a sprint' ... Do not let anyone, especially a PT push you, there is no place for the 'no pain, no gain' mentality. :)

Patience is the key Grasshopper :) - tag me any time, if you have questions :)

TennisNut Sally, I thought I want rehab but my OS likes to send his patients home especially if they are doing good. I am so glad that I had come home hospital for 4 days was enough away from home for me! My case though no stairs to worry about, someone here to help me, family and friends here all the time checking on me. "Life is Good"
