Re: Another small step forwad to reclaiming my life!

Yes, it is frustrating. On the other hand, and being devil's advocate here for a moment, one has to remember that the number of people visiting doctors with undiagnosable, truly psychosomatic symptoms outweighs in spades those with genuine problems.

Re: Another small step forwad to reclaiming my life!

Had my first PT today, went well except that I'm a bit nauseous today.
I was able to get the pedal around on the bike for some motion for my knee for about 5 min
My flex seems great 95 where I'm going to need to work (and don't worry I'm not in a rush or a panic) I was 8 degrees short of 0 on extension.
I have spent most the day napping and resting. And I think another nap is calling me!

Good for you!
Naps are always are a good thing.

When I was 9 also had 'growing pains'. That knee was replaced last year. Guess I was done growing and it was still 'paining me'

.As for the psychochomatic component. Been there, done that.

And I am a medical person. Boy,, has this opened my eyes.

As for you Catherine, PLEASE use your crutches. What if you fall???

could use some feedback on my pain management routine.
I plan to call the OS office on Monday but I expect it to be a somewhat slow response as M/T are surgery days.
I came home I thought in really good shape and first 24 hrs were good.

One thing that was special about that first 24 hrs is I had a patch to help fight nausea. That ran out Thursday mid day.

Starting Thursday night I was really nauseous - Horrible by Friday AM, I never got sick but was VERY close.

Here is my pain med routine
1 Oxycontin CR 10 MG (every 12 hrs)
1-2 Norco 10/325 (every 4 hrs) - I think the Norco has been making me sick so for most of Friday/Saturday I took 1 every 4 hrs - but as of today (sunday) I'm taking 2 every 4 hrs.

as part of my preventing blood clots I'm taking 1 325 Bayer asprin 2x a day.

I'm using my crutches, I'm elevating and icing.

But I'm still in too much pain, and now that I'm taking 2 Norco every 4 hrs I'm also light headed.

thoughts?
thank you

Hi Catherine.
What is your real activity level?
How about asking for either another pain med or an anti-nausea patch.
Sometines we go through rough patches that simply have no explanation.
Do you get relief with the 2 Norco every 4 hours?
Make sure you eat when you take these pills (I know, nausea is working against you). Call tomorrow and see if they have any suggestions. Maybe skip the exerxises for a few days, but if a med isn't working, it needs to be changed.
Best
Sandy

my real activity level since thurs night is
going from bed to bathroom; from bed to kitchen; from bed to let dogs in/out (tiny house same place as kitchen) Out to PT on Friday and home.
period. Frankly I have been too nauseous to do anything else.

I felt GREAT on thursday. but I was not running laps. My knee feels super stable and very strong. But when I'm getting the pain close to being managed I'm super nauseous.

I have done none of the exercises I'm supposed to other than ankle pumps. (other than the very little I did at pt that was mostly stretching and tightening quads and some assisted straight leg raises)

the pain starts going up when I'm due from the Norco at 4 hrs but it was never down to a resting comfortable level in the first place.
If I move around at all it starts to rise (ie go use the restroom).

I'm being good about eating something small, whenever I take the norco (or oxy)

I'm going to ask about another patch on Monday.
thanks

I think part of the problem is it's difficult to feel good when you are sick at your stomach. So you need to either get some anti-nausea medicine or switch pain meds to something that doesn't have that effect. If you can't get through to your surgeon quickly, how about your GP?

Once you get the nausea under control, then let's see how you feel pain-wise. If that's still a problem, there are other choices for medication. You really NEED proper pain management, so don't get discouraged if you have to try something different to get there.

Catherine, please do ask for something for the nausea. I have the same problem with the heavier pain killers. The antinausea meds make all the difference in the world!

on monday I talked with the nurse at doc office, when the PA is in today he should be calling something in for nausea as well as more pain meds to my pharmacy.
in the mean time she said trying drinking some milk when I take my pills and I think that is helping a little bit.

pt was good today gentle stretching as well as some massage around my patella to make sure it was free and tracking right. then he watched me walk with my crutch and gave me some pointers, then I gave him my crutch because pretty much I don't need and it is in my way if I'm thinking about walking. Plus I'm going slow and he is right there.
I walked about 12 or 15 yards 3 times?
then he had me get on the bike with no resistance and pedal for about 5 or 6 min. then we did measurements and ice me down.
I'm pleased with my progress, I'm down to +2 on extension (I was +5 on friday) and I was 107 on flex (was 95 on friday) I would be down right giddy if I was not light headed lol - I'm eating lunch now then plan to nap and rest for the remainder of the day.

You are doing so well, Catherine. I think getting the nausea under control is half the battle. :thumb: It sounds like you have good pain management~so good that you forgot your crutches. :th_heehee: I bet you could tell a difference right away and felt really good after you had your knee replaced. I remember telling my OS on the first day post-op that I LOVED my new knee. It truly makes a HUGE difference when the cruddy old knee is replaced with the new one. :yay:

I've been meaning to ask....are those your malis in your avatar? When they run, they are poetry in motion. They are the Ferraris of the herding dogs IMHO.

I hope those anti-nausea meds do the trick for you, carousel.

yes they are mine! I have had Malinois for over 18 yrs, it was my dog Rave running and her 5 month old son running trying to keep up with her. She was an amazing dog.
I LOVE the breed and I can't imagine my life w/o them :doggieshmooze:
I currently have 3 Malinois and a Mudi.

Nausea is better I think the milk is working and I have cut back to one tab of Norco instead of 2 and I think I can tolerate 1.

the nausea meds I have taken just once and didn't see a "big" difference.

My pain is doing better I think part of that is I have been able to get the swelling down (ice/elevation as well as some EASY no resistance pedaling on the bike) as well as I'm now 10 days post op.

In short I think I'm getting over the "hump".

thanks for the concern/feedback. The end of last week and the weekend was rough! but things are much better, it is amazing what just some healing and a few days can make.

I keep ginger ale handy to help with the nausea. Perhaps it is another option for controlling your nausea.

Do you have more pics of your malis? They are so intense and become very bonded with their choice person. I am a GSD owner and can't see me owning anything but gsds although I did adopt a sheltie from a rescue.

thank you,
I do have some ginger ale and some ginger rootbeer and have been drinking things like 7 up
being able to cut back to 1 Norco has made a huge difference. The trick will be if I can manage just "one" for PT today.

as far as my dogs... yes a ton of pictures....
www.carouselmalinois.com My web page is a bit behind as I have had a lot of "life" to live in the last year or so.

Hi Catherine, I feel your post have been useful for anyone looking at this site and trying to figure out their issues. I especially like "it is amazing what just some healing and a few days can make. " We live in an era of instant gratification. The body is an eco system. You are over coming a radical change in the eco system: new parts, chemicals, and change in the physics of movement. As your body adjust to these changes, you begin to feel better, but it takes time. We have not discovered how to speed up the body's healing process.
I hope you have a better weekend, and remember, every movement is therapy. Getting dressed is therapy, drying your feet is therapy, getting into and out of a car is therapy.
You are doing well,:thumb: thanks for your post.
David

Thanks David,
last weekend was tough, I think the combo of not enough pain management and feeling nauseous was a very frustrating combo.

I had PT again today (last visit was tuesday)
I'm pleased w/ my progress as is Kyle (my PT)
I rode the bike easy for 10 min with resistance of 1
then we I practiced my bending, when measured I was 112 - I was very pleased, I didn't work at it that hard at it, it is early and I still have my staples in.
I then did 2 legged leg press and leg curl with really my left leg doing most all the work just sort of putting my right leg through the motion. My right leg does not need a lot of work at this point other than the straight leg raises and 1/2 leg arch raises (I forget the proper name) I'm doing at home.
after that Kyle worked on some stretches with my right leg (working on extension) today I felt more stretch and less pain (not that I ever let them hurt me or do they want to hurt me). On my own with a bit work and pushing hard to get my leg straight I made my goal of "0" on extension. I was thrilled!
I then relaxed with my legs elevated and iced up.

I'm extra happy that I also am making it on 1 Norco (for break through pain). Yippee! I'm still taking 1 10mg cr Oxycontin every 12 hrs.
I'm also amazed that I didn't wake up last night! I slept for 10 hrs... I was PRETTY darn sore when I woke up but it was doable!
