TKR Another small step forward to reclaiming my life!

Very good program Catherine, I would suggest to focus on function vs number of degrees. What are you able to do this weekend that you were not able to do last weekend? I suggest this because, numbers go up and down. There can be a 5deg error in measuring the angles. There is no error in the ability to put your socks on. It is those little victories that is great for your mental health. More positive achievements. When all is said and done, what are you able to do is more important than number of degrees.
You are doing great! and with staples yet.
David

HI David
I think my function is great I have pretty much stopped using my crutches.
Kyle (my PT) knows me well enough that I'm competitive and I LIKE numbers, and I would be untruthful to say that I'm not motivated by numbers - I'm also someone who lost 55# prior to my LTKR in January -- so yes numbers DO mean something to me!
I'm 5'9 and feel SO much better at 195# than I did at 250!
the numbers to be honest help give me feedback, validation etc. I know the numbers themselves do not mean anything. David you are SO correct it is the function! what I can do etc... how I feel (knee and weight loss very similar in that department)

That said once I have recovered from my RTKR adventure I want to work on the weight numbers I'm thinking another 40# would be very good for how I feel as well as my health.
I could just work on my weight until I "feel" right in my skin, but the numbers (the scale) help give me feedback so it is good for me to have a goal.

It is just part of my personality I suppose. VERY stubborn and indpendent, I have been putting my socks on since I was in the hospital lol last week mostly because I didn't want to ask anyone to do it for me. The fact that I'm have been on my own since Tuesday I am pretty much doing everything I need to do except driving. Just slower!
I can't wait to get those staples out next week!

thanks again for the support/feedback!

You sound like me, Catherine. I'm extremely goal oriented also. I've always got to have a number to chase.....weight.....GPA.....ROM

 I had help with the teds in the hospital, but once I got home I found a way to get the socks on myself. It was a bit of an effort at first, but I know what you mean about trying do do stuff yourself. I did get help for things, but getting my own socks on was a matter of pride. :hysterical:

that is a quote of the week!
Getting my own socks on was a matter of pride! I LOVE IT!!!!!! just awesome!

I wore my Birkinstock sandals until today, when we got 6" of snow. First post-op socks, but it wasn't bad at 4 weeks pot-op!

Well here is my first feedback from the 2 outings I had this weekend.
Monday the 10th I will be 2 weeks from Surgery.

On Saturday I was feeling good enough to have a bit of cabin fever (mostly because I had been able to back off my pain meds and not nauseous.)
So when a friend of mine asked if I wanted to do a trip to Costco with her I "jumped :hysterical:" at the chance to get out and do a sort of normal every day life thing. I also knew that Costco had motorized scooters.

So I packed an "ice the knee pack" with 2 portable soft ice packs, one of my crutches and a soda! I also had some snacks and some pain meds just in case I needed to take more meds

I kept ice on my knee for the entire adventure, Just sitting (in the car as we did errands I was not used to, my rides to PT are just 15 min a the most) and I decided to keep ice on my knee while driving the scooter around Costco - I'm proud to say I didn't hit anyone or anything at Costco! and all and all I handled the trip really well! I had 3 people ask me while in costco if I needed help reaching or putting anything in my basket. (other shoppers) I thanked them but I had my friend with me to help me if needed.

All and all we were gone for 2 hours and I my knee really did feel great. I think the key was I kept ICE on my knee as well as I kept the rest of the day really easy. Even this "easy" outing prompted a nap when I got home! I hope people that have not had their surgery yet will please plan on no matter how well your knee is doing (and I think mine is doing great) it takes A LONG time to get your endurance back.

that brings me to TODAY! a planned outing I was just not willing to give up! but I also knew it was a bit more than I really "needed" to do at this point in my recovery.
I planned ahead and had a "team" of people to help me my friend who was driving as well as 2 other friends that I knew were going to be attending this practice. I told them what I needed ahead of time and was not shy about being really specific about what I needed. It was a dog training practice where our dogs do a sport called lure coursing. It is not that "people" intensive but normally requires a good deal of walking.

Again I planned ahead, this time I had my soft ice packs as well as my portable ice machine chrio cuff? as well as cooler with snacks and drinks figuring I would need to take pain meds on this adventure. I got ready "early" so that the hour before my ride picked me up I was resting, icing and elevating my knee.

this event is held in a field so ground is not even. I had my chair and put my feet up on my cooler while not 'great' elevation I iced EVERY time I sat down.

The challenges of today - 90 min drive each way (again I stayed iced the entire drive), and 2 hours at the practice. I felt good and walked around as well as stood more than I had thought I would? but even at this stage, there is something that just makes me "feel" good to be able to do a few things for myself.

As soon as I got home tonight as quickly as I could did my chores, letting the dogs out that had stayed home then feed dogs/cats and me and took my pain meds. I got my ice machine loaded up and tucked myself into bed leg bundled up in my ice wrap elevated and my machine circulating away!. I found while I was not really in "pain" I'm restless, couldn't get comfortable - this is a sign of my pain not being managed. so I got up and took a 2nd norco and decided to post my weekend adventure.

Next weekend I have an actual lure coursing test for my dogs, again I will have a team of people to help me and I will plan to take my anti-gravity chair so I can better elevate my knee. Next weekend will be 8-10 hr day. I will need to do better on not standing when I don't need to.

I felt pretty good at my event today, I napped on the way home and I'm tired tonight. I think that when I'm done with this post and sign off my 2nd Norco should have done the trick, and I will be ready for SLEEP...............................................

I can't stress how much I love these ice wraps/machines that will circulate ice water. I'm always amazed at just HOW much ice helps for pain management... seems like such a simple thing but wow, the power or ice/elevation as well as I love the feeling of the "wrap" and compression from my (vitalwrap? system) ice machine I have. If anyone is wondering if these machines are worth the money? I say YES oh yeah, heck yes 100% I can't imagine doing this recovery w/o it!

good night! :sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep::sleep:

Good post, Catherine. You have just made an excellent case for really thinking something out and planning ahead! I'm so proud of all you were able to do without just wearing yourself to a nub. Hope you rested well and are doing fine today. Sometimes the "after effects" of an outing can occur the next day or two...so watch for it and take it easy for a while until you know how you've done.

Thanks Jamie,
I learned a lot from my first tkr and I have learned a tremendous amount amount from the smarties. I have PT today, and that will be a good indicator about how I "really" did (over did a little or a lot lol). But I have NO other plans today other than to rest, elevate and ice!!!

I WANT to be able to do things as much as I can as I'm ready to do them. But I don't want to pay a high price.

I did pretty good last night ---
I did get to sleep last night after I signed off, I woke up a few hours later, and took more pain meds and then one other time I woke up and took more meds.

I woke up this morning stiff and sore (like every other morning the past 2 weeks lol) but NO worse than I have been the last 5 or 6 days.

so - yeah, I think planning ahead makes these outings FUN and sensible.

yipeeeeee!
2 weeks and counting! onward and upward! :yahoo:

Verdict is in...
I over did "a little"
Kyle (my PT) cautioned me to take it easy that things are early.
I rode the bike for 10 min and was able to lower the seat a notch as it was easy to get the pedal around.
then we measured my knee and were happy with 112 and Kyle didn't want me to push it as I still have staples in.

then we did leg press, and today I did my right leg alone at 60# it felt good, didn't hurt at all.
then did heel raises and some good stretching on my calf (felt good!) as I have had some pain in my calf (we do NOT think it is blood clot related but it has been sore) and then 2 legged leg curls.

finished up with balance work, straight leg, quad sets and those 1/2 leg raises.

then we measured extension and I was very pleased to be at -1 so I have "passed" Zero and I feel very pleased and relaxed about my progress!

my plans for the rest of the day is to REST.

I really think that my recovery is easier because of my age?
I do think things have seemed easier for me as compared to what I hear others talk about during their recovery.

I asked Kyle about this today - he has only rehabbed one person younger than I was from at TKR and that person did very well also.
he thinks my age in the fact that I think the younger we are the faster/easier we heal. As well as the fact that I'm a physically "strong" person? I'm by no means frail or weak (my choice of words and all sound wrong). And that I had not lost much function in my leg prior to surgery. I know that the feedback on "prehabs" usefulness has mixed opinions, but I do think it helped me. And I loved this also, he said my weight is in what he considers normal limits, in other words not so much extra weight is not hampering my progress.

I'm also very good at resting <G> I pretty much do no PT homework other than riding my stationary bike 2x a day for 10 min (non PT days only).

all and all... GOOD day.

Today is staple removal!
I was good and did pretty much NOTHING on Tuesday other than to ride my stationary bike for 14 min!
can't wait to get rid of these 40 staples!

Yay for you! I didn't have staples, just glue.....Derma bond. I think I'm very grateful that I didn't have staples!

I had 26 smalll staples, and there only one or two that smarted when they were removed. I think you were so wise to plan well for your outings. When I go out in the car, I take a couple of pillows with me to buffer my knee. They sure help. Ice machines are a godsend. Mine gets plenty of use. The hospital sent me home with 2 figuring I needed one for my ankle. The ankle does swell, but actually icing the knee helps the ankle swelling go down.

Glad to hear the staples will be out today and you're doing so well.

Thanks everyone
all 40 staples OUT Yippee!
then had lunch out, then PT
NOW I'm TIRED!
PT was good up to 113 am not rushing or pushing my flex, I have lots of time and am very pleased with my progress.

Catherine,
You are my inspiration! Love, love, love reading your posts on recovery. You are one day ahead of me in time, but leaps and bounds in recovery! But that's okay. I'm expecting to be right up there with you once I can walk. :snork:

I agree with you about your age and an easier recovery. I think that really does help. It is one of the reasons I went ahead with the TKR now, while I'm still "relatively" young--and I was in good shape, so my muscles were still strong. I think that will make a big difference for me in the long run.

I am so happy that things are going so well for you. I know it helps the "pre-ops" to read recovery stories like yours. And it helps me too! :thumb:Niki
