Niki
you had a very unexpected dramatic event! that has de-railed you for a short time. But you will get there! I know there will be a day when will be chatting and we will be talking about doing the SAME things and how great it is to be months and months away from our TKR.
You have such a strong desire to recover and that will serve you well when your fracture says you can "go for it".
I know when we had surgery dates so close I thought it would be great to follow each others progress, who knew you would face such an unforeseen event! Hang in there! I'm one of your biggest fans and am rooting for you!

After reading another post tonight I had a thought... is there any research regarding what type of diet is most beneficial during a recovery like ours?
I'm not sure if I should leave this question on my thread or post it in a thread of its own. I'm just curious. I hear people say we need healthy foods, or more protein but is there any actual research on this topic?

thanks!!!

I may be a slow learner at times; but I am smart - NOT today

one rule I should stick to
- I do it with diet, I do it with training my dogs I do it with my kids at work lol

change ONE thing at a time not 2 more more lol

This morning was an in service day at work, so no youth. There have been a lot of changes since Oct 1 at my job and I was itching to make an appearance and this morning they had a staff meeting scheduled.
- change number 1 - more walking than I have done so far - no crutches I really have not used them since 6 days post op. I figured walking in and back out of work was 1/2 mile. I was also at work for 90 min, most of it sitting down - on a normal day I never do anything prior to PT.
- change number 2 - changing from Norco (10/325) to vocodin (5/500)

I wanted the change on meds If I could manage it, but I may have not picked the best day to try it!

SO - At PT I was in a good deal of pain, we just adjusted, not a big deal but wow.... I should know better to to make 2 changes!!! same day....

lesson learned,,,, I hope it will stick for a few days!

Catherine, your story made me smile because I could see myself doing that very same thing!! You'll be okay....don't worry.

That does sound like a heck of a day, Catherine! I'm adjusting to a change in meds, too. I ran out of the long-acting oxycontin and figured it is just time to do without that. I don't really want it if I'm going to be able to drive again. I've had a busy day running errands and now am back on ice. I hope you are feeling better. Ice and elevate. It helps the pain levels.

I did better today!
I rode my bike for 22 min then iced
then... drum roll.... my long awaited massage!!!!
holy cow she worked out some nasty knots on my left leg and lower back.
and she did a lot of gentle massage on my right leg with the goal of just helping improve circulation that will help promote healing.
Sunday is a big day. But I have planned well for it and will minimize time on my feet. I even have a folding recliner type chair to take with me so I can nap and get my feet up.
thanks again for the support!

Catherine, please let me know how you feel after the massage. I really want to go get one, but I'm nervous about it, for some reason.

Here is the follow up for my weekend.
Whoa.... my massage was amazing!
she was wonderful to work in a very kind way my right leg mostly just working on improving circulation.
however...oh boy oh boy! those areas that have been compensating for my right leg they were SORE! she worked out some great sore spots in my lower back and my left leg. I have another appt Oct 27!

On to Sunday!!!!
A LONG day out and about at a dog event, I was away from home for 10 hrs and was on my feet more than I should have been HOWEVER.... I had a chair that I could recline in and I had my portable Ice machine! I was VERY good about elevating and icing throughout the day.

I decided to see how I felt at PT today to decide how much I 'over did'
my flex ROM is up to 117! so I was very pleased. I did something right so that my knee did not get extra swelling.

Other than PT I'm doing NOTHING today, well I think there is still time for a nap!

Sounds like an excellent plan for a "rest" day!

...I was away from home for 10 hrs and was on my feet more than I should have been....

You have the energy of your malis. Your body is amazingly resilient for all that you throw at it~and live to talk about it. Enjoy your much deserved rest.

thanks!
well? I done almost nothing this week, (other than PT) I'm SO TIRED!
things are going well, I feel pretty good for 3 1/2 weeks I can't wait until I'm not so tired any more!

Some days......... I need to vent to people that understand. One of the hardest things for me with this recovery is what the surgery experience itself and pain meds to do my MIND and Memory. If a person tries to finish my thoughts when I'm trying to find my words, or interrupts me - I just loose my mind. I can't remember where I was "going" in the first place and I get SO frustrated. I'm then told just to "finish what I was saying" and they get frustrated with me like I'm playing some game that I can't remember. It makes me NOT want to be around people, and it was a HUGE challenge when I have someone at the house helping me.
Just need to vent......... my "best" friend who I talk to every day of my life pretty much gave me I have been crabby for 3 weeks etc.... and that I should get back to her when I was not so cranky, I know she didn't mean it? she is frustrated with me, but I was left speechless mostly because I KNOW I will be frustrated and crabby again SOON, it is only a matter of time!

Some days I do not like the title of my thread :sigh:

I keep telling myself "each knee IS different"

While this knee is STRONG and stable, it is very angry.

I know what to do, I ice I elevate, I plan ahead. I am GOOD about resting at home and not overdoing it.

But this knee ticks me off lol

I have needed MORE pain meds and I still feel like sometimes I'm borderline on having it covered which in turn makes me crabby.

I go into PT and am often tired (I still do not sleep well), But I like working out and I do not do ANYTHING at PT that hurts. But even then as I learned this week doing something that does not hurt? can catch up with you a few hours later. We added a few new things this Wed, again nothing hurt but turns out just 5 min of walking VERY slow in the treadmill BACKWARDS as I'm working on my extension wed just blew up my knee. I have been pretty miserable since Wed, I'm icing and elevating and babying my knee since then. And on PT on Friday ALL we did is stretching (hams and quads not working bending/extending my knee) and some balance work, easy on the bike (slow and lowest resistance) straight leg lifts and hip work. Gave my right leg a SUPER SUPER Light day and a good deal of tlc. My PT said to do NOTHING this weekend (other than 5-10 min on bike 2x a day if I feel like it, and ice ice ice, elevate, elevate, elevate.) I'm HOPING that by Monday my knee will have settled down.

I met co workers for lunch in Friday and I'm LUCKY my boss had a TKR a year before I did. I told him this knee was going slower. Long story short the "plan for now" is I will head back to work 1/2 time on the 28th, that will be 9 weeks and after 2 weeks of 1/2 time I hope I will be ready for full time. but we shall see. He was VERY understanding and knows the importance of this time, and that my TKR is a HUGE deal for my life and that it can't be rushed.

anyway, feeling like craby-catherine

craby?

Anyway, please don't get down, honey. You are only 5 short weeks out of surgery and it's perfectly normal for things to still be hurting and hard. Just hang in there. it will improve.

But you really think you'll be fit to go back to work at 9 weeks? Would be a tad early in my book. I think even half time the first week might be a bit much. Have you seen my standard Phased return to work I use for workers over here?

Catherine I have those crabby days too. I have explained to my friends that I have good days and bad days. I cut the phone calls short when its not a good day..sometimes its just hard to be polite and listen when a big old knee needs to be taken care of.
