MUA 10 weeks after TKRS and not yet happy

It sounds as if you're doing fine. Expect continued slow, gradual improvement.

Here I am almost 5 months after surgery and still experiencing significant overall knee pain including the occasional stabbing pain on the outer side of my knee. I am still not yet happy that I had the surgery. Still in more pain and discomfort that I had pre-surgery. What the heck gives?

Don't know Barbri but if you find out, tell me!

I am. And now t'other knee is complaining! If the condition of the knee prior to surgery is a determinant as to recovery afterwards then l'm aware that this is going to be a slower process process towards recovery than l had anticipated. I just hope my (R) knee holds up in the process.

What does your OS say Barbri.. also it might be time to seek a revision specialist.

My OS never said six to eight weeks timeline. Said it would take months and all the pain may not go away. I got training from webinars and a notebook the OS practice gives to patients. Also talked to other TKR patients.
And did some research on line but frankly a group (not here) was all whiners and I knew that was not accurate.

My surgeon told me it could take a year to feel 100% recovered. He said to plan on 12 weeks before returning to work and normal activity, but a year before feeling totally healed.

Yes,I expected a prolonged recovery, but not significant pain for 5 months. i see my OS next week and will see what he says. The thought of a revision is repulsive.

I expected that recovery could last 6-12 months, but I thought that was more in terms of ultimate extension and flexion not significant pain and discomfort. I thought that after almost 5 months that this would have gone for the most part if not entirely. I would certainly appreciate feedback as to whether I am right or wrong in my assumptions.

Hey @BARBRI ,
Is it consistent, continuous pain and discomfort. So my surgeon gave me a 1 year guide line also, he broke it down sort of like this
0-1 month. You are going to hate my guts and live off of pain meds. pain really high
2-6 months. like spring weather, all over the place. there will be days you feel like, ok I'm over the hump and the next day your knee could be back to tight and swollen
6-10 staring to feel good. still could be stiffness especially in the am.

So you are neither wrong or right (sorry) Are there other symptoms?? swelling, fever etc?

also do you notice an improvement? for example I'm still achy/discomfort but I an walking more "normal".
last night i went to bed without having to pop an oxycotin and I'm walking more and better unassisted.
but i can be walking and all of a sudden wham!! short stabbing pain

Thank you for your feedback eliza61nyc. My experience would be consistent with yours and your Os's guidelines. No fever or noticeable additional swelling. I can walk normally, but not for long distances or spans of time before it starts to hurt [maybe one half mile].

I have also cut back on pain meds. Just take a couple of Tylenol PM at bedtime.

I went to physio and the pool this morning. Achieved 122 degrees flexion which I am happy with. PT tells me that it is not unusual to be experiencing pain after 5 months especially if your knee/leg has a slightly different alignment after surgery. It takes time and pain for things in the leg to get use to it. I will see what my OS says next week.

I spent the last 70 hours mostly cooped up in a car. My 5 month leg now hurts. I'd call that normal. Not exercising is worse for me than exercising.. back to the horrid stationary bike.. Its below zero with ice and snow.. ( feet of it)

I'm at about 10 months and not a day goes by yet that I don't notice my TKR in one way or another, I still experience swelling most days and the replacement knee area seems bigger than my regular natural knee. I have some aches and pains from time to time, my biggest problem for me would be the swelling, but I continue to see progress, used to have trouble getting into my husband's pickup truck normally, about a week ago I noticed I was able to get in normally again, ( instead of looking kind of dorky. ) So I guess what I am saying is I think a lot of what your experiencing may be normal at this pt yet, unless you pain is really, really bad and preventing you from using your new knee. Recovery is a very, very long road. If you are experiencing pain that you think is more than you should be having at this point in time, seek out you O.S. advice, if you have something else going on it would be better to catch it sooner than later on.

Thank you all for your constructive feedback. I woke up this morning, got out of bed and to my surprise i was experiencing the lowest level of morning stiffness and soreness that I have had in almost the past 5 months. This despite a heavy work out the day before shovelling snow, working out in the gym and the pool and taking minimal pain killers. Hope is this is not just a passing phase.

@BARBRI - although it's only 5 months since your surgery, you are using your knee as if it is 100% recovered.
I think the pain is a reminder to you that this knee is still a young child and still needs special consideration.
After all, you are still not half way through this year-long recovery.

I'm really glad that you experienced less pain today, even after giving your knee a hard workout yesterday. That is an encouraging sign.
