Will new knees be good enough?

Gene - you have come such a long way. So good to hear you progressing toward the finish line. I agree - get rid of the dental stuff and then you can focus on your knee.

Well done!

I am Having Left TKR in 2 weeks and have anesthesia questions

I do not want general anethesia. Has anyone experienced other forms of anesthesia?

Hello, raucher, and welcome to BoneSmart. Why don't you start your own thread and tell us a bit about yourself?

As for the anaesthetic, we've all had the alternative - a spinal. That and some nice sedation to knock you out so you're unaware of anything but not so deep you can't maintain your own breathing and swallowing, really is the best. Most surgeons prefer to use spinals nowadays as it's safer and less traumatic for your body, heart and lungs than a general.

Have a look at this thread which explains it all Differences between spinal, epidural and femoral block

My OS has patients do PT prior to surgery. We knew my right knee did not get straight. At the PT evaluation it was bent 8 degrees. After some instruction and a weekend of working on it myself that knee measured at 3 degrees today.

Maybe I should just do PT and forget TKR, (Just kidding)

Hopefully, improvement pre-surgery will pay dividends in recovery.

Gene,

I am so proud of you for deciding to have the TKR. You will begin to
start living again and it won't be long until you have the other knee done and you will feel "on top of the world!":happy dance:

Got to climb to get there though. Many of us will follow your lead to the top, Sonja.

Thanks Gene! I am feeling pretty darned great even though they will be removing my right knee and replacing it! I don't have any pain and I am walking almost normally now!:happy dance:
Life is wonderful, and I am so thankful that the knee is doing well! I am ready to go on the cruise March 27th!:yahoo:

Welll, quite a couple days. Oral surgeon consult yesterday. Tentative decision was to do procedure in hospital setting. They would call to day to advise of date.

I call and they tell me the best date possible was 4/18/11. That would have set the TKR back from 3/21 until May. :tantrum2: Right I through a telephonic tantrum. The, of course, blamed it on the hospital.

I then told them to ask the surgeon if we could still do the work as an office procedure. well, he agreed but only with me awake, no lala land.
Needless to say I wasn't happy:hissyfit: but that then could put dental work at 3/17.

With this set up I then had my appt. with the OS's assistant for the pre-sugery talk for 3/21. We rescheduled knee for 4/12. OK that is not too terrible but I will now need to reschedule all kind of other stuff, like bloodwork and need another appt. with the Assistant.

Oh well, PT again today in the middle of all this confusion. Life is interesting when PT is the highlight of the day. Rescheduled Joint Camp because it was set for what is now Dental day, blah, blah, blah. You've got the picture.

Bottom line is three week delay, assuming I show up for the dental work.

All this pre-surgery grief will be forgotten during the "agony of rehab" and "the thrill of victory over arthritis -part 1. (Stealing from the Old ABC Olympics TV intro.)

It will be good to get to the other side. Doesn't seem right that after finaly making the decision to do this that these obstacles keep coming up.

My fingers are crossed.:skeptical:

Ahhhh......life's little "challenges." They are everywhere and pop up at the worst times. But it does sound like this is something that needs to be taken care of immediately, so in a way it's a blessing that it was discovered so you could deal with it. It would have been a worse "challenge" during recovery from your knee replacement!!!

Hang in there, hon.....it's just gonna make you appreciate that new knee even more. We'll be right here if you need someone to lean on.

My father had a RTKR on 12/14 of last year...his procedure was postponed due to some dental issues and infections...it was truly frustrating, but he had it done and now he is feeling much, much better. (He is in Florida as a "snowbird" now completing rehab down there.)

You are correct: soon, this little dip or valley will be replaced by a tremendous recovery and it will all be worth it.

Gene, yours and my replacements will take place about the same time! I will have a buddy and I can help you get through the rough times and you can help me!:happy dance:

Sonja,
I look forward to all our rainbows sharing mutual support snd success.

Gene...I love reading your posts. You have come so far since you joined the BoneSmartie crew!!! Yes, there will be some rough days ahead, but keep the posiitve attitude and you will find the surgery and recovery a daily adventure. I started a thread and journaled my progress. It is amazing how this helps others as they prepare to go down the path.

They really do keep you busy as you approach the date for your surgery, but that is good. Keeps you busy and your mind off the surgery. Now is the time to plan for recovery...enroll in Netflix for a few months....get some audiobooks...order that body pillow...etc etc.

Again..I am so proud of you!:THUMB:

Having a rough day. Anxiety high. Frustration higher. Tired of doing battle with schedules and stuff.

Having trouble seeing the end point.

I hope tomorrow is better.

I too had days as you are having. I had my #2 knee replacement all planned out for the third week of January. Went for Cardiac clearance...had to have a stress test..could not schedule for two weeks. Had had an three ulcers discovered in November, went for a followup in January and they had not healed! Had to wait a month and have ANoTHER endoscopy before they would give me GI clearance. So it was not until the beginning of Feb before I could have my #2 knee done. I was so frustrated!!! They were definitely not doing things on MY timetable!! I felt like a kid who wanted to throw a screaming, kicking fit. (I had been pretty miserable with my knee locking and worst of all could not take any NSAIDs!!!).

But at last things came together and they did second knee. I think I was the happiest patient in the hospital that day.

It is fine to have rough days, it just helps to reassure us that we have made the correct choice. Gene, all is going to be okay.:friends:

Gene, tell us what you are frustrated with. Perhaps we can help.

Barb, you got it exactly right. Too many distractions. Other issues that arrise involving dental work, stress tests and wondering what will be next. There ought to be a better system where it all works together.

I guess "back in the day" your "family doctor" knew you and managed such things. Maybe not, it's just the way things are.

You are right, it will get there. Just get tired of all the "stuff". Work is an added pressure. our school system is changing it's information system. One piece of it is mine to train and bring end users up to speed.

If they don't learn and apply, kids won't have schedules on opening day. People are not happy that I will be out for a while. They really have no back-up plan. Frankly, that is their problem, not mine. I will not live in pain to keep other comfortable. No need to explain further.

It is long past time for me to look out for me!!! I have 160 days of sick leave. I have this much because I have years and years of never taking a day off. It's payback time. No, no one is trying to stop me. It's just my own drive to want to get it done right. But, I can't do it alone and I will take care of me first.

So , Jo, much of my frustration is brought on by my own sence of values and need to get the job done. The delays and other medical issues are complications that add pressure. I think I am now going in circles.

No, I won't give in, I will defeat the gremlins, I will get past the distractions.and with the Bonesmarties I have a group who truly do "get it".

Nobody else does. At least in cyberspace I am not completely alone..

Thanks.

Sympathies, Gene. I'm having trouble contemplating taking this much time off work as well-- even though, like you, I have the right to plenty of sick leave. But also like you, I like things to be done, and done well... and others are going to have to take up the slack while I am away.

But what you say is exactly right-- "I will not live in pain to keep other comfortable. No need to explain further." I can't do anything about having to take all that time off; I will work from home once I am up to it and go back as soon as it won't damage my recovery to do so, but beyond that, I just have to try to let go a bit.. but it's not easy.

I do hope things get easier for you and all goes as smoothly as possible from here on in .

River

Taking adequate time now to get well will make you more helpful to others later.

At least that is the justification I found helpful when I had to take time off from work and away from family members.
