THR Tashia's Hip is in Recovery, WOW!

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

thank goodness its another day. Yesterday was a ruff day. However first thing this morning I got lot of paper stuff done and it is now off my back. I find that this hip replacement has been harder on me than the knee both emotional and physically. However being out of the pain I was in is defently gone and the pain I am having now is slowly leaving as my recovery advances. I think I have everything now closed with my house. I sure hope so. In fact I ended up with a credit from a company that now pick up the trash at the house I sold. :wow2: nice surprise. I don't know what I would done without you yesterday but :hairpulling: a lot. I found that I spent most of yesterday just coming to this site and just reading a lot of very interesting information and read lots of stories. I see that again I have forgotten to eat breakfast again so i must sign off and eat. Boy would a box of Sees candy be nice to have. Oh well I need something better than that but It sure would be good to have. Tashia:doggieshmooze::yes 4::flowerysmile:

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Glad to hear you're doing better, Tashia.

I can't get you a REAL box of See's Candy, but maybe this virtual one will help:

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Thanks Jamie, but i would like the real thing. I found the box you sent me was awful hard to get into my mouth:th_heehee: Now tomarrow I have more paper work to do because of the hospital stay the first of the year. We got some sun today and boy does it help the mood. :feedback: I read that if the knee is numb it can be considered pain. I read your article on pain but I just want to make sure I read it right Because after 7 hours after pain med my knees start feeling numb and pain can follow afterwords. I take them every 8 hours and i want to make sure I not waiting to long. Sometimes it takes over 45 or 60 min after I take them before the pain or numbnes leaves. I'm having more trouble with my knees more than my hip. I would thing by now I wouldn't need this much pain pills. I have to admit this is the first time I really am trying to do pain control the right way so I need all the help I can get.

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Tashia, what is your prescribed dose of pain meds? The trick with pain control is to stay ahead of the pain. It's like a big circle - you take the meds and then that pain control lets you get more active and build strength. If you are constantly needing to wait for the meds to "kick in" that slows the whole process.

Please let us know what medication you are taking and how often are you supposed to take it.

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Jaycey, Thats not what I wanted to hear. The medician is Percocet, the original dose was 1 to 2 tablets ever 4 hours. Then I notice I could move them to 11/2 to 2 every 6 hours and it work fine. then: One and half ever 8 hours was't working so I went to 2 ever 8. Sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't. What concerns me the operation was Sept. 13. Should I need this much and this late of time?

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Everyone heals differently so there is no "should" on meds I am afraid. I'm going to tag Jo so she can advise you on meds and the level you should maintain. @Josephine:

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Hear is why I have so much trouble knowing how to deal with pain. As I said I have had very physical jobs. I was with Red Cross and did almost everything, teaching CPR, First Aid of all levels and also did actual Recovery of people in almost every thing man can throw or Mother Nature. I also worked with lots of Fire Departments. The bottom line is I would get hurt and I wouldn't notice it or deal with it until after I got home. If my team got hurt we did not take care of the injury unless it laid us out. Since I had some knowledge on how to treat injuries I wouldn't go a doctor or hospital until the injury was infected or really bad. When other lives were at stake, they came first.

Now I am trying to realize that I am in pain or better yet try to keep from being in pain. I do know everyone heals at different rates as with different pain tolerance. Now that I am retired I am trying to break that old habit which is not dealing with pain until I notice it. What I have discovered is when I say I'm at 2 as far as pain is, my doctor would say you are more than that and he was 95 per cent right most of the time. I didn't know if I should reveal my work but how can you help me if you don't know how hard it is for letting people know I am hurting without knowing my background.:doggieshmooze::sigh::flowerysmile:

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

I think a lot of us have experienced this. My OS was astonished that I was walking around when my hip gave out. I guess we get used to the pain and deal with it. But I agree - seeing anyone or anything (animals, etc) in pain and I react in the same way.

But now is the time for you Tashia. You want to get back to activity and being there of others. That means caring for yourself in the right way so that you can move on.

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Tashia, all you are saying is that you have a certain mind set about pain and what it represents. That's okay - we all do in one way or another. Some are supersensitive and others like yourself are more hardy or stoic.

I think you are right to be concerned about the amount of time that has elapsed since your surgery but only in respect of what it is that is causing you so much pain. Do you actually know this? Does your surgeon even know?

There are two classifications of pain: short term pain which happens for a specific reason like surgery, is treated and then resolves. Then there is chronic pain which has not so obvious causes, is long term and often very difficult to treat though often it does resolve, just not very quickly. It seems pretty obvious that you are in the latter category.

Have you tried other pain meds or even a cocktail of meds? Sometimes taking one med for a longish period of time means the body gets accustomed to it and it begins to lose it effectiveness. (And I am not talking about addiction nor even dependence.) The latest thing in this issue is to prescribe small doses of two, three or even four different meds to avoid this acclimatization. It's called the multimodal approach. I cannot find any articles about it that aren't super scientific but any decent pain med doctor should be familiar with it. Maybe you would be better consulting with your GP and/or a pain clinic to get help to work out an effective but low grade pain medication.

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Right after I read what you said, I called and made a appointment with my doctor. The medicine wore off and I was able to focus on the pain. I hurt in the right hip in the back were you sit. It has a sharp pain in an area about couple of inches in circle. When I put pressure on it it feels very soft like it received a blow had hit it. I don't remember anything unless it got hurt in the fall and its now showing up. It is a little delayed to show up but anything is possible. That side did land on a pile of magazines I was going thru. The other hip is just tender when the meds wear off.

Now that you told me to focus on my pain I also noticed my stomach is still very tender. When I fell, I fell very stiff and did turn to make sure I didn't land on the right side. X-rays were taken so I do know nothing got broken but they don't show pulled or strain muscles. Thank you so much for making me focus on the pain, I now have some very valuable information for the doctor to work with.

Also something else came to mind when I had my knee done I had lots of uncontrolled pain so it was a rough healing. I would only take the pain pills at night which I realized was really stupid now that I know. This time with my hip I do have break through but the fact that my knee is still involved, I have to wonder if my knee ever really healed because of not taking time. Could it also be trying now to complete its healing?

I will also talk to the doctor about pain control and some new meds because it has crossed my mind a couple of times about my body getting use to them. I'm not talking about addiction or dependency like you said. Thursday is the day I have the appointment so I will let you know what he says. My spelling tonight is really bad but I'm sure you can get what I'm trying to say.

My driving is not happening so of course I am having a serve case of cabin fever but I compared my notes with my knee and see it took this long for me to get going. The only difference is that I have you guys to help me and a lot less pain because I'm really trying to take care of the pain. Well that's enough from me for now but I really want to thank you all for all the input. It really helps me put things in order. I don't like it but what can you do about it but keep climbing the hill:doggieshmooze::friends::yes 4:

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

That's a very good analysis of things, Tashia. You're doing well and I hope you have a good and useful discussion with the doctor.

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Hi Tash, my good friend :)

You really are doing wonderfully well, listening to and understanding your own body now regarding taking care of yourself...

My goodness you have come such a long way.. New woman, new computer skills (fantastic computer skills, I am so proud of you :)

Good luck with your Dr's apt.

Thanks for your post on my thread, lots of love and big, big hugs xxx Sandy

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Tashia,

Just wanted to say hello, sounds like you are doing well. Your post about staying positive helped me a lot as it is easy to get discouraged when this healing doesn't go as fast as we would like it to. Take care.

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Good luck at your appointment Tashia. Let us know how it goes!

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Hi Tashia,
You are getting really good at listening to yourself. You are right it isn,t always easy though. It is a really good idea to work out what is causing the pain. The tolerance to pain that you were describing that has come from your working days also builds up from coping with chronic arthritic pain. But now its time to try and get rid of as much as that pain as possible and understanding what is causing it is a really good start. Good luck with the doctors.

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Josephine, the doctor did give me another type of mild pain killer. However he wants me to take the major one twice daily and use the mild one for break through which I am to some degree. I am pleased though part of me is not. Just one thing I would like is for them to test me to see if the pain is muscle or the new hip or knee.

I did ask to be referred to physical therapy and it he felt pain control was more important. Personal I feel I need both. I will try this then I will push more for physical therapy. I not a happy camper but I am to the point to go somewhere else out of my HMO to get a second opinion. Which do you think would be a best because of all the injuries I have had a muscle specialist or a joint specialist? A doctor that deals with sport injury also has crossed my mind.

Deep down I feel the answer is just in front of my face but I can't see it. I have decided to increase my massages because feel I have nothing to lose. I'm trying to stay positive but I have to admit I feel a little down after the appointment because pills seems to be the only answer. I did take a long nap afterwards and that did feel good. Now to come up with a new plan that I will try to get back to driving.

I guess part of my frustration is that I lost my doctor of over 25 years just before the hip replacement and because he knew me he worked with me to his best of his ability to get me back on my feet. I realize now how much I miss him but he did deserve to retire and be with his family I just wish I could of told him goodbye before he left. One day he was there and next day he was gone. I do miss him because he really cared and wanted to see his patient get better instead take this and call me in the morning. My new doctor is good but he doesn't know me yet nor do I know him yet. I'm sure everything will come work out. I'm just frustrated right now need a day out of this house other than going to the doctors. Everyone take care tashia:doggieshmooze::flowerysmile::confused:

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Tashia, I'm glad to know you are making some progress in getting to the bottom of your pain. One thing to remember is that almost all of these pain medications are only effective for about 4 hours. That may have been at least part of the problem for you initially when you were taking the percs every 8 hours.

Don't worry about sharing information about your work. It's not a problem here. The information is general enough that it does not expose your personal identity in any way.

Please let us know how you're getting along! I do believe if you keep working on the pain issues, you'll get it resolved.

Re: New hip 13 September - feeling sad

Hi Tashia,

Even though the day didn't go exactly as you hoped you are being proactive and trying to take care of the pain issues, for that you are so strong! Keep on keeping on...:thumb:
