THR Spring is right around the corner

I am on my first full week of walking with my cane. I don’t use it as I should at home but always when I go out. Question: my muscles hurt sooooo bad. I would think this would get better but so far, no. I THINK I realized good stable shoes are a must right now. I wore some cute, no support flats to volunteer on Tuesday and thought I might die from the muscle ache. Am I right on the shoes? I keep walking and pushing those muscles - it is NOT surgery pain - is this correct? All you “pros” who have done this are appreciated. @Mascaramom, didn’t you say You’ve experienced this? I could hardly get out of my chair after long walk to car at the end of parking lot. (I did it intentionally to work those muscles). Too much @Layla or @Jaycey?

Hi!
Definitely wear shoes with decent support.
All I wore for years was ballet flats and most of them have no support. I'm sure pounding the pavement all those years didn't do my hips any favors.
I've learned you don't have to sacrifice style for support. Many brands such as Naturalizer, Clarks, Vionic
have shoes that are up to date style wise but offer the comfort and support we need.

Are you still icing? Where is your pain? Two months post op is still early recovery in the whole scheme of things.

Pain is in buttocks and thighs. Like I have been to the gym for several HOURS and overdone it. I wore ballet slippers also and that is what I had on Tuesday. Always word Clark’s of born when teaching for support. Going to check them out.

Walking definitely taxes your muscles as much as anything. I can feel the after-effects of walking more than the PT. Good sneakers with elastic laces work the best for me when it comes to long walks. I have a good pair of new Balance sneakers and a pair of Skechers which are slip ons. Easy to put on with a long shoe horn and both are stable and comfortable for long walks.

Agree with Eman85 on Sketchers.
Forgot I have a pair of their slip on Go Walks that are comfortable.
Try icing more frequently and taking it easy for a few days and see if the pain eases.
If you're not taking any pain relievers, consider talking to the office of your OS for some direction.
I'll bet a few days of rest and icing will help.
Hope you feel better soon!

@Walkinginthesand my glutes feel like I've been exercising for hours too. I started icing them this morning and they are feeling better--not sure why I was only icing my hip and knee bedore. I just need to stick my whole body in the freezer. :ice::loll: I think I'm going to need to go nd buy a new pair of shoes this weekend too. This new hip thing is expensive!

You'd think that a mile is a mile, right? For me, the longer the individual walks, the more tiring they were and the more likely to cause stiffness. You wouldn't think that more walking would be the right thing, but I guess it's like the "hair of the dog." Even when I feel stiff and don't want to get out of the chair, if I get up and walk around a few minutes, it loosens everything up. Even if you weren't walking a lot while out volunteering, standing around is also a lot of work for those glute muscles.

When I walk more than the previous day (in the cane stage) I, too, ache in the thigh and buttocks. But if I don't go outside and walk then the next day I am stiffer. We need to find the sweet spot between too much and too little. I'm wearing slip on sneakers with strong thick tread and cushioned insoles.

This what I use for "icing", 4 water bottles frozen and fill to line with water. You can sleep with this on your hip and it will stay icy for hours. It was on me at the hospital and part of the package when I left. I can't imagine using an ice pack. I'm sitting in my recliner with it on me right now after PT.
doing the "butt squeezes" while you're in bed 20x for a 10 second count will help.

I am discovering everything you say is true! After walking, if I sit too long I am soooo stiff and need my cane again IMMEDIATLY. Can’t figure that happy medium yet. My OS told me to get rid of all old shoes!!!

Mojo, THAT Is expensive!! :yikes: BUT...I wore a pair I had limped in for a few years and YIKES I was walking bad again by the end of the day!!! So I ordered a new pair of new balance, just my old ones. :walking:Couldn’t figure out how to tie them (gracefully) in the store! :heehee:

Oh to go back to the old days when the salesperson at the shoe store put the shoe on your foot and tied it!:rotfl:

And I find my Fitbit to be about right on - if I get up about once an hour and walk about 200-250 steps, it reduces stiffness.

I didn’t want to mess with trying on shoes yer @Walkinginthesand so I ordered a new pair of the last ones I bought on line. Got them in black so I can use for return to work. Dress shoes can wait ca few more weeks.

:hi:
Hoping the pain in your rear and thighs is better since Thursday @Walkinginthesand
I'll bet your cushy new shoes will make you feel re-energized :walking:
Have a great weekend!

@MammaT I just couldn’t imagine trying shoes on in public- still a difficult task to go in public! So I too reordered new shoes just like old ones.

You must go to classier shoe places than me - finding a salesperson at one of the big box places is impossible - just hunt in the stack until you find your size. That's even more difficult if you have wide peasant feet like me!

Hope your day is grand!

Another question for you pros and the rest who have done this before. Along with my new hip, my doctor said he made my leg the same length as the other. I now stand on both feet and it feels so much better. But as I extend the distance I walk, my lower back, spine and neck hurt. This must be part of all the “realignment”. Any of you have this in addition to healing of hip? I have heat on neck and ice on hip. :loll:

Another question: yesterday, we went to a large furniture store to help our daughter. My husband told me I was limping. I was using my cane. Seems I don’t limp as badly just concentrating on heel-toe walking at home. Suggestions on not limping with cane? :bignono:

So much to relearn and rework. Man!!

SaraK, I don’t buy shoes at classy stores, just remembering shoe shopping at Kennedy’s shoe store and the undivided attention ! Or yes @Bumblebee the full service gas stations!
