THR Spring is right around the corner

Can the blues hit you even almost 2 months after surgery? I am feeling VERY sorry for myself. Yesterday’s fear/pain I think played into my feelings. I am weary of the healing, I am jealous of being able to pick up and going for hours, tired of still not sleeping well. I am just TIRED. Tim went to the grocery store and I just had a good ole, let the steam-off cry. The grandsons are coming to spend the weekend and their laughter will help. I am just tired. Anybody else feel this way? I REALLY want a GOOD nights sleep on my side or my back of WHICHEVER I choose. :sleeep:

I just re-read this and I sound like such a baby. Many of you have it harder than I do. Mine is just being weary of recovery and tired of not sleeping. Soon we will ALL wake refreshed, not hurting, ready to jump in the shower and set the world on fire!

The blues can absolutely still happen at this point. Recovery slows down and we get impatient or concerned. Or, like me, you injure yourself and have to backtrack. The blues may even be more likely now - family gets tired of the process, outside support tends to dwindle but you're still not up to snuff, tired of dealing with doctors and tired of not having everything back to normal. Now is when you look back to your presurgery thread(s) and go back through your recovery thread. See how much progress has been made - it's amazing how much surgery brain makes you forget about those early days and the pain before surgery. Looking back can make you grateful for where you are. And help you understand that things will continue to move forward. Go out with friends, do some retail therapy or have a date night with hubby - all things you wouldn't have dreamed of 4-6 weeks ago!

I've compared this surgery before to giving birth. Remember when the newness wore off but it was still a lot of work? That's where you are now.

Oh @SaraK THANK YOU!. The baby analogy is so accurate. My husband has backed way off and I am feeling responsible to do many more things. You’re right, friends have seen me out and about and think it is all finished. I do want normal. I am feeling so much better and The little things undone or neglected by Tim did not bother me, but now I want to go them. But walking is difficult with muscle pain. Tomorrow will be better, my grandsons will be here and I will feel better. Thank you for the reassurance. :roseshwr:

@SaraK I chose a heart on your post not for friendly, but for love. I think you nailed it! @Walkinginthesand you have every right to have the blues now. It's like our own version of postpartum depression--less all those hormones. We get all of the attention and help at the beginning and then everyone just assumes that's it it's over once we can walk a bit without the cane. Still pain and restless nights, but different. Reviewing our progress is a great thing to do--we had MAJOR surgery and we're overcome so many obstacles. A good cry now and then is cathartic--it's ok to cry. Hugs!!!:friends:

There are so many I have “met” in this forum that I want to be REAL friends with. @hipster333 you have the sweetest spirit. Your reassurance was right on point also. Today I felt so alone. Even my poor husband got a bit of it. He ran to the grocery store and I got grumpy. By the time he walked back in I was irritated he could go and I couldn’t. Does sound very postpartum :heehee: sleep tonight...better tomorrow. Plus grandkids to make me smile

Aw @Walkinginthesand you’re the sweet one. I’ve felt very isolated from the outside world ever since my surgery. I don’t know what I would have done without all of you to get me through my days. It will get better and we will get through this together. Enjoy those grandbabies tomorrow. Hugs.

Oh me too @hipster333! I didn’t care at all at first because I slept and stayed on my pain medication but as the weeks have passed. I felt SOOOOO isolated. I could not really do what my friends were running and doing. I read A LOT and my husband has been amazing. He has tried hard to find movies and we played games but just recently (as I feel better) I feel the world is passing me by. I do a lot of history here in our town. We are where the Santa fe and Oregon trails left in mid May to arrive at their destinations in 6-8 months. They actually left from the west side of oh our historic courthouse. I work with the National frontier trails museum and there is a big gala On Saturday. I didn’t work on because of my surgery. DANG IT! My husband and I also dress in 1855 costume and do many things for the city. I couldn’t do that either. But soon. Soon! Sorry for the long story, but this is what I’ve been missing.

I did order a new pair of supportive walking shoes and that feels great. May have to wear them under my 1855 costume!!!

My grandsons will be here early, but nana is ready. I feel much better tonight after so many here “gave me permission” to be sad today.

@Walkinginthesand I am icing tonight, too! I felt the incision and it is really "hard" tonight and I believe I messed up and overdid. Stairs a lot today. More tomorrow with laundry...like a bazillion loads :sos:and I am going to go grocery shopping. My OS suggests long walks in Costco (every aisle), but I'm not a Costco girl, so will do the best I can with a normal store. :walking: 64 degrees for Sunday!

On a good note, I caught up on paying my portion of all the medical bills to date. :swoon:

@Poodles - that's what I have a son for! Since my hips started bothering me 2 years ago, I go down once a week to sort loads and start first one. Then it's his job to keep them moving and bring upstairs when dry. The first 2 weeks after each surgery, I Sorted upstairs so I didn't even have to do that one trip.

@hipster333 - isn't it funny that our world seems smaller at the very time it is expanding with new friends all over the globe?

@Walkinginthesand - I agree - at some point, I'll move away from this site but I have met some wonderful people that I hope I can remain friends with over the years. Some I even hope to meet in person at some point. My one suggestion for everyone is to "pay it forward" and stay on the site for at least one groups recovery even after you have recovered. Think of how much valuable information and reassurance we have gotten from those farther along in their recovery. It's one thing to commiserate with others at the same point in recovery but definitely helpful to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Right @AgilityDog ?

Look at the lovely @zinnia. While she's still going through her recovery, she has brought so much comfort and reassurance to others who are or might be facing the need for a revision.

@SaraK What a wonderful post. You are so right about the wonderful people we have met on this site. Even though I am busier now that I am hitting stride with my recovery, I still want to check in daily to see what my friends are up to and what new challenges someone may have. Each one of you has given me inspiration for recovery that I did not get elsewhere!

Aw just sending out hugs to all of you today! :friends:I agree we should pay it forward--this is not an easy journey and it would be a terribly lonely one if we didn't have each other and the support of those who have gone before us. @Walkinginthesand your job sounds awesome! I love history and bet that gala is incredible. What fun to get dressed up in period clothing!! Just think--next year you'll be there with no pain and maybe a pair of heels. Hope you are having a better day today and are enjoying your grandbabies!

I am tired all of the time too--mind you I am pushing myself too much these days. I just keep thinking that I should be better already after five weeks. We just need to remember that we are constantly improving--even if some days those improvements may seem slow to us. I think today will be my day for a good cry==I'm worried about going back to work in just under two weeks and being tired all of the time and having this deep ached around my hip when I walk (I am walking around the house without the cane now, but having the hardest time losing the limp without the ache). We'll get through this!--just need to cry sometimes. :boohoo:

@Walkinginthesand how was the visit with your grandsons??

@hipster333 the grandsons were just what the doctor ordered!!!! Oldest, 7, and his grandpa opened some natural geodes. We had ordered them for Christmas from National Geographic. Yes, we ordered a box of round, uncut rocks. But they had the BEST time with safety goggles, hammers and chisels in the garage. They would whoop when one opened. Carter flew in the back foot to show me the treasured crystals inside. By late Sunday when we took them home I was pooped out!!!

Dont get down on yourself for being weary. I am ahead of you in the healing process. We need to go to Tulsa to see Tim’s 94 year old mother and have been talking about a trip. I could manage the ride with frequent stops. We would not stay at her house because she has lumpy bumpy twin beds. I still don’t sleep well and just take naps in the afternoon if need to. So we are just going to wait a week and think about it again. That is the frustration for me!! Just hang in there- it will come.

It maybe better to use the cane again for awhile. I'm at this stage too ... I can walk very very slow without the cane but the ache and limp are there.

Just remember it's not all or none with cane. My PT said to start the day without the cane and go back to it when I started to have pain, got tired or started limping. 2 tricks my PT gave for not limping without the cane (assuming you're not limping with it - if you're limping with it, you might not be ready for transition):

Put a tote bag with small amount of weight in it on op side. It will naturally keep you from leaning towards op side which is what you do when you limp.

Alternative - have your imaginary cane in hand and walk with it - moving your hand with the "cane" just as you would with a real cane. It fools the body into walking like you would with the cane.

@Walkinginthesand geodes are so much fun! I remember doing those with my son when he was that age, I'm glad you had such a great time! Tulsa sounds like fun. How long a drive is that from where you are? Lumpy beds are not good at this stage. You need all the sleep you can get! I'm so happy the grandkids got you to cheer up! :loveshwr:
@Bumblebee and @SaraK I'm using the cane a bit more today now that I'm more tired. So new rule for me is when I walk with no limp then no cane, but when I get limpy I need the cane. You're right SaraK it's not all or nothing. Good suggestions for walking with the "faux cane".
