Shelly's Recovery

Give a call to the manager of the therapy office and let him/her know what happened. I would also tell them that you do not wish to have that same therapist nor any other therapist that will cause you so much pain. Good for you for speaking up!

So sorry about your bad experience today. Good for you that you told her to stop, but I'm sorry you had to feel that pain first. Be sure to baby that knee today, and probably tomorrow, it is bound to be upset.

Ugh!! That's awful. Heading to PT in just a bit. New pain this morning in my tendon on the outside of my leg. Very sore and I have to walk almost stiff legged to get it to move. Icing now and then see if they can address it at PT. I always do hamstring stretches so not sure what this is about now :-( It always seems to be something doesn't it??

Sorry about your tendon pain @flyaway79! Hope you feel better after PT! You are right - it is always something. A couple steps forward, a couple steps back.

Spend icing and elevating as much as you need to, to get your swelling and pain down that's probably going to come after your horrible pt visit. Make sure you never have her again. Or don't go back at all. You don't have to take pt to recovery your knee. It knows what and when to do something. Let it be your boss, not anyone else! I never took pt and ended up just as good as anyone else without the pain and hassle of pt! You can always read my thread below to see how I made out. And of course, Josephine's! The more you read about no pt, the more you'll realize you don't need to do it!

What the what? The aggressive stretching seems to be par for the PT course, but why is she touching your scar right now? My bandage just came off and I assume yours looks like mine - ugly and not totally sealed. No touching. I'm glad you stood up for yourself.

Well done for speaking up to that PT @mechellec . Don't ever allow anyone to hurt you. Say STOP immediately.
It's not necessary to put anything on your scar, or to massage it. Mother Nature has been healing wounds for thousands of years, without intervention, and she's pretty good at it. Apart from that, as the others said, putting creams or lotions on it risks introducing infection.

Well, it shouldn't be! Nothing done at PT should be aggressive, because it's not necessary and it can harm your knee and slow down your recovery. Say NO to anything aggressive.

I agree with both @Jennszoo and @Celle about touching my incision. Why did she even do that? Do other therapists do that? I just got my bandage off Friday. It felt so unsanitary her digging into some cream and rubbing on it hard like that. She didn't wash her hands first that I saw. I'm not letting them do that again either. Enough is enough. I'm so sore now and I am angry. I feel like going to a whole new place except the last guy I had was really good. Maybe I will just request him.

I sincerely hope the other therapists don't do that!
Not washing her hands and then digging into some cream that has probably also been used on other people before you? I really hope that you reported that, because it is a very dangerous practice that could spread infection from one patient to another.

Wow! I don't blame you for being angry! I would be too! I think requesting the therapist you like would be good but if they can't accommodate that, then find another place! Hang in there!

Hey Shelly! For once I was glad I had PT scheduled LOL. She zeroed right in on my tendon issue and spent most of the time working on that. She was able to get it to calm down and it's much better now.

My ROM was up to 107 (woo-hoo) and she was surprised at that because of the tendon issue.

When I'm at PT they often do slowwww stretches on my knee but they always tell me to tell them the minute I feel a good stretch and they stop and hold it. It has never ever been painful. They also have never touched my incision. Just told me that if I wanted to start putting Vitamin E on it I could now.

If you find a PT you like definitely request to see him and him only.

Carol

@flyaway79 thanks Carol! I agree and I am going to request the therapist that doesn't hurt me. I'm so glad your therapist helped you with your tendon issue and way to go on your ROM!

I wouldn't allow anyone to touch my knee/leg well into 2 months post op. No one lifted it or so much as touched it until. My PTs did massage my leg with Palmers Cocoa Butter, but not until after 3 months. I have read here of some PTs massaging new incisions and don't understand that at all.

Have you tried making your appts wil particular therapists? I always stayed with the same one or two because they knew my background and what my OS wanted.

I was forced to cut back on my pain meds. It made for a few very long and painful days. Stopping your medications too quickly will cause you more problems in the run.

I just don't have a lot of pain during the day and i forget to take my pain pills during the day. At night I hurt and wake up to take a pain pill.

So if you're not feelicing any effects from forgetting your pain meds I wouldn't worry about it. It seems you've partially weaned yourself already.

I've stopped my pain pills during the day because I really don't have pain, just the discomfort from the swelling and muscle soreness and am just using Motrin and Tylenol. I do take a pain pill at night before bed and sometimes again in the middle of the night if I wake up because of the pain and can't go back to sleep. During the day and evening I've been using a Tens machine which really helps relax the tense muscles in my legs.
