Shelly's Recovery

Sounds like you are making great progress!

Sounds like things are progressing well. I agree that the attitude you decide (and I believe it is a decision) to adopt in the morning will rule your day. Good for you to purposefully choosing a good one! I agree with the others that you should not be concerned about ROM at this point. I will admit I was and it was a waste of time. If you allow your body to recover, you will feel when it is time to do more. Listen to your body.

(9 days post op) Its been a great morning. I ended up doing pt after all this morning and it went very well- so much better than before. Went from 40 ROM at 5 days post op to 98 ROM today. I even gently did the bike! Went from there to my post op appointment where I got off my silver strip and it wasn't near as gross as I had prepared myself for. Dr said I was healing well. Now I am completely exhausted and am home to ice and elevate and nap all day. Sending out positive thoughts to my fellow bone smart friends.

Your ROM is coming along nicely. Your knee deserves a big rest now, after both PT and your surgeon's appointment on the same day.

For several months after my TKRs, I found that doing just one extra thing each day was plenty for my knee - and for me, too.

Mechellec, that's wonderful! I'm new here on Bone Smart (but 8 weeks post op on LTKR). You will get better every day - though there will be times you will feel as if you are going backwards. Try not to get too disappointed with that. Things might seem slow and then suddenly you'll discover you can do something you thought you couldn't do. I am still learning to not push and too much to not expect too rapid a recovery - patience pays off. Happy for you - your progress is something to celebrate.

Remember you're still healing and just 2 weeks post op, keep icing, resting, elevating and your ROM will continue to increase.

What an great increase in ROM! You are definitely headed in the right direction!

Spent the day icing and elevating and doing a few exercises. I feel a little stir crazy. Can't seem to fully focus on starting a new book and TV drives me crazy after awhile. I would really love to go to church with my family tomorrow morning but I know that there would be no comfortable way to sit (theater seats). Maybe in a few weeks.

Cabin fever is awful! I had it bad during my recovery and even though I'm an avid reader I could NOT focus enough to read. Have you tried binge watching a new series? The Crown on Netflix is really good as well as The Missing (Starz). Both kept me interested and wanting more. There are also some good movies to rent right now; Hidden Figures, Lion, LaLa Land are a few I've enjoyed.

Theater seats would be hard at this point. So I'd say hold off on church for a while, your leg still couldn't handle being down for an hour. When I finally was able to return to church (2.5 months) I still propped my leg up on a chair beside me.

Hi @mechellec, I hope you are having a good day. I am 5 and a half weeks and finally went to church today, yea! BUT, I am really tired and knee is screaming. We came straight home and I am icing. You will get there. You are almost a month behind me, mine was March 22. Don't go too early. That is my exercise for the day!

Thanks ladies. I know in a few weeks it will be a different story. I woke up this morning so stiff and sore there is no way I could have even tried to go to church. I think I'm going to look into that show "The Missing" that KarriB suggested. I loved The Crown and have never heard of The Missing. If anybody else has any great show suggestions to binge watch I would welcome the recommendations. Off to binge watch. Have a great Sunday!

I'm a little jealous of your ROM ;-) I am 6 weeks out and just now am getting to 100. I had great range before my surgery and was very active (60 years old).

I am still struggling with the internal swelling which seems to flair up whenever I become active. So- back to elevating and icing.

Have you watched the series Bloodline on Netflix? Very good. I'm waiting for season 3 now.

Flyaway79 I forgot about Bloodline! My hubby and I watched season 1 last year and forgot about season 2. That's a great idea too, thanks!

Don't be jealous of my ROM. I was on a mission after being measured at 40 a couple days before that. I was so jealous of the elderly gentleman beside me at PT who had surgery two days before me and was measured at 80 right next to me. Everyone says not to compare and they are right, but we are human and competitive by nature. I also get super swollen every single time I exercise. I've really been struggling since my last PT appointment when I overworked. I think we all keep icing and elevating and doing our exercises and we will all be back where we started. Thanks again for the Bloodline reminder!

@mechellec Yup that ROM drives me crazy!! Mine swells up the moment I take a stroll around the house and a few stretches - aarrgh! Then back to the icing and elevating.

Have you watched Damages with Glenn Close or Nurse Jackie? Both are on Netflix. And if you haven't already watched it Making a Murderer on Netflix is crazy good!

Unfortunately I've already seen most of the good shows on Netflix before I even had this surgery because I travel for business and spent a lot of time in hotel rooms. I'm always looking for something good to binge watch!!

@flyaway79 thanks for the movie suggestions. I did enjoy Making of a Murderer. If you have access to HBO you should binge watch Big Little Lies with Reece Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. It was super good!

Thanks Shelly! I will look that up!

Exercising causing swelling is why we suggest your knee is at least a month old before you start exercises. The ROM will come in even quicker without exercises. Experience is the best teacher, and we have been there and know it works! Are you have to do is use your knee in your daily life and follow the activity guides.

@flyaway79 Bloodline is great & I'm waiting, too!
@mechellec The fine line between overdoing & not is a pain. Every time I think I'm going forward, too much PT or something puts me back.
Patience is tough.
With cabin fever, take little trips out. Take your meds, ice & elevate. It will get better!

Horrible PT experience today. Last one was great. I guess it depends on the day. The first 45 minutes were great until they stretched me at the end. The therapist on Friday was gentle. The gal today hurt me horribly and I screamed out in pain. Before that she rubbed a cream very very hard into my incision. I am glad I've been reading Bone Smart because I made her stop and not touch me after that. I told her that I didn't understand how she thought that hurting me that badly would be a good thing at all. She hurt me more than I've hurt this entire time. She told me people had different thresholds levels for pain. I told her I didn't care and I never ever want her to stretch me like that again.
