Shelly's Recovery

Threw a pen on the floor?! :skep: You should've told her to pick it up! My OTs were kind and helpful with tips on easier ways to dress, shower, get out of bed, etc.

Well as I'm nervous as heck tonight it feels like a positive thing to start my recovery thread. My RTKR surgery is tomorrow at 11:30. Hoping I'm feeling good enough and not too loopy from pain meds to post something positive tomorrow. Goodbye old knee! No more wreaking havoc on me!

Best of luck

She should not push you at all. These therapist can be so uncaring sometimes. I wouldn't let anyone touch me and wouldn't do anything that I didn't feel like doing. It was my knee and I knew it better than anyone else! It was funny that the PT told me that she was going to tell on me and I said to go ahead, that she still wasn't touching me and I wasn't doing anything I didn't want to! My OS never said a word about me not taking any PT. He saw I was doing just fine!

I'm elevating and icing and have done some light walking and it feels like most my pain is in my inner thigh where they gave me a (large needle) shot prior to the spinal. My calf hurts a little too and of course I'm hoping I'm not getting a blood clot. Hate all this worry.

Mechellec, can you add your surgery date to your signature so we can immediately see how far along you are?

So that we can see it at the bottom of every post you make, and thus advise you appropriately, please will you create a Signature, in which you put your knee surgery and its date in full? Write the name of the month, so there’s no confusion.
Hover over your username, top right of the page, and select Signature from the drop-down box. Enter your surgery details and then save. This article also explains how to do it:
How to create a signature
If you can’t do it, please let us know, so that we can do it for you. Please tell us which knee and the date. Thank you.

My calf hurt from the very beginning and is still sore but it is severely bruised. Keep doing your foot pumps and it will help the circulation and work the calf as well. Later on, heat will feel really good on it but too early for you at this time. Ice helps a bit as well but I am 2.5 weeks out and although better, my calf is still sore. Good luck!

Thank you LindaO. That is good to know! I did call the Drs office tonight and they thought that was normal and said if it was a blood clot it would hurt much worse like a bad Charlie horse. This site is so great with sharing info

I thought I changed the signature RTKR but it didn't appear on my latest posts.

Oh yes, I remember that calf pain. It was awful for two or three weeks. It hurt almost as much as the knee did, especially when I walked. It will go away. I'm so glad your doctor eased your mind. You did the right thing by calling him.

After block completely wore off last night and probably having overdone my walking and bending my pain got to a ten last night. The tramadol makes me itch and the oxycodone makes my skin flush all red and hot. Hoping to switch some meds. Thinking maybe switching the oxycodone to hydrocodone. Need to stay ahead of the pain today. Can't believe how great I could bend my knee in hospital and can barely bend it now :(

This happens as the soft tissue reacts to the trauma of surgery and swells. I spent the first month icing/elevating/resting as that's the best response to the swelling, then I felt able to take on a few things around the house. Follow the activity progression chart to help with balancing your activity level.

You swell because your soft tissues are traumatized. Your knee is a newborn baby. Treat it like you would a real baby. It needs the same TLC as an infant. And only use very gentle movements. Aggressive PT is counter productive and will keep your tissues inflamed and swollen, not to mention terribly painful.

I, too, couldn't believe the difference when I got home. In the hospital I was a rockstar, passed all the tests with flying colors, and then the block wore off. I spent the next day in shock and pain and then logged onto BoneSmart and re-read the advice. Elevating, icing, pain meds on a strict schedule, and I was much better after a couple of days and could start on my recovery. I don't think the hospital staff really prepares you for the reality of those first few days.

My best advice to you is to re-read the post op articles every few days at first. Every time I did, I saw something I had missed or forgotten that was helpful. Good luck with your continued recovery.

I am four days after surgery. I sure can't bend very much. I could bend great before the block wore off. Now when I do heel slides it's just a tiny bit. I alternate two hydrocodone with one tramadol and it sure makes me sleep quite a bit which I guess is good. I have zero appetite and am very nauseated. I'm taking zofran. I am all crackered out. Taking colace morning and night with no luck yet. Every time I get up to go to the bathroom I take a couple laps around our main level. Not doing much. My family has been awesome taking care of me. I know this is a slow process and I'm not good with slow. I better learn fast. Hope you are all doing well!

The first week was so difficult for me, but in the second week I really saw a lot of improvement. Patience is hard, but is your best friend right now. Your activity sounds good, you will know when you can do more. I took senecot faithfully 2 x day and after 5 days of nothing took a full dose of milk of magnesia which did the trick the next day. I had to do that for a couple of weeks before my body started to get back to normal. I still take the stool softener. My family took really good care of me those first few weeks and it is a real blessing. I had to struggle with letting others do things I wanted to do for myself, but I had to learn to do it. It made them feel good to be able to help me, too. Best of luck this next week. I expect to hear that you are feeling better soon.

I added miralax last night and finally had a small BM this am. Going to keep taking the colace, a magnesium tea and the miralax to stay on top of this.

My bend was also awesome at the surgery center and now, barely anything. I just do a few gentle seated heel slides a Couple times a day and otherwise, I'm in the recliner, elevated & icing. The swelling will go down eventually. Trying not to stress ROM yet.

Jennszoo, it sounds like you and I are at about the exact same place. I think I'm gonna try that Miralax today. A little nervous for my first pt appointment tomorrow.
