Good luck Stephie; looking forward to hearing from you on the post op side when you can :)

Well Hippies, Had my RTHR surgery on the 10th.. Things leading up to that date seemed like it wasn't going my way.. Especially when they said if you have infection or cold they cant preform the procedure. I started feeling sick the Friday before.. I started taking every over the counter I could find.. It cleared the following Wednesday. OK, on the surgery.. Being obese everything is a risk.. So, to say I was scared is a understatement.. I was very positive.. Lots of prayers from family and friends and having faith that the Lord will wrap his healing hands around your sick body you will do just fine.. I remember the Anesthesiologist saying you will feel a pinch and then all I remember is I had a dream then they rolled me into recovery.. Some pain meds and all is ok.. Came home yesterday.. This was my first major surgery and with so many red flags against me I was very scared.. Once you total turn your faith to God and allow the surgeons to do what they do.. Everyday after is truly a blessing.. Home PT starts today.. while in the hospital they said I did really good.. I felt myself trying to do to much in the past days.. Knowing your limitations and setting daily goals.. What hurts for me to do today.. might not so much tomorrow.. Always good when you get a tomorrow.. March on..

Live Well, Love Much, Laugh Often
I will keep you updated on progress..

Thank you.

Well done bigozzie9er, looking forward to catching up with you on the post op side of the forum :)

Hello!!! I have not been back to this forum for a while. I have been busy this summer. Refresh: I had LTHR on March of this year. It went well except when I weaned myself off the pain meds, the right hip was very painful. I couldnt believe the news. I even started my own blog 'Another hip surgery, oh no!' I scheduled right hip for July 26th after getting much support and encouragement from all my fellow hippies on this site. Because of personal complications, I had to cancel the date. Needless to say the pain is worse everyday and my summer was quite bad because of pain and restrictions of movement. Despite the awful pain, I managed a vacation to the beach with my 6 yr old grandaughter and a visit to Miami to see family. Last trip I took, I had to request a wheelchair at the airport because I couldn't manage all the walking. (2 years ago I was power walking 3 miles 5 days a week and I have been doing this for 25 years) Seeing myself in a wheelchair and using a cane all the time was so depressing for me. Especially after getting the left hip replacement in March. The pain now is actually worse than before I got the surgery. The good news is that the side that was replaced is pain free. I took the plunge and scheduled the right THR for Sept 26th!!!! Yesterday I went for preop appt at hospital. I am quite scared , but I so need and want my life back!!! So I am putting fears aside and plowing through.
The reasons for my fears are quite real. I never had major surgery in my life til I had LTHR on March-2012. When I woke up after surgery, the pain was unbearable and they started a pain epidural in recovery. Next day the nurse got me up and I walked with a walker the lenght of corridor and back. BTW I had an anterior aproach which is a state of the art surgery that is minimally invasive( 5 inch incision and no movement restrictions post) I was sent home 30 hours after the surgery and THAT WAS A MISTAKE!! Because of the epidural, ( they replenished it again that morning) the pain level was very low and I thought I was over the worse. So I went home in the early afternoon the day after the surgery and when the epidural effects wore off, I was screaming with pain and the pills were not touching it. Finally the pain meds took the edge off the pain. I also had a severe reaction to the tape used and developed 6 huge blisters that sometimes were even more painful than incision .
This was all addressed with my surgeon and Dr. of Anesthesia in preparation for upcoming surgery. They told me they would start the epidural PRIOR to surgery so pain control would be in place when I wake from general. :happydance:I am praying this will help.
My best wishes for a speedy recovery to all those Sept mates that are now recovering and prayers for those that are coming 'up to bat' May you all heal and get your normal active pain free lives back!:yay: God Bless

Welcome back Abi,

So sorry that you are having such a rotten time with your right hip, but good news that your right hip is pain free.. sounds to me as though your medical team will be on top of the situation regarding pain control etc..

Focus on 26 Sept and that dreadful bone on bone pain will be gone...

Thank you so much for the encouragement. Surgery date is very close now....butterflies and doubts creep in, however the choice of opting out is not the answer. I am focusing on pain free side and praying that soon my life goes back to normal activities. I promise to keep in touch and try to help others thru this site as much as they have helped me. Prayers for all who have gone thru surgery and those waiting for relief. God Bless:angel:

That is a lovely post from you Abi, you will be fine this time around, they will be prepared.

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post and I will also be having my first surgery ever on Saturday (29th). I will be getting LTHR and I am extremely nervous but excited to be pain free. I am 28 years old but I have had rheumatoid arthritis since I was 7 years old which fortunately went into remission at age 10 but I was left with limited range of motion ever since. 2 years ago I put on 20 pounds and started feeling that familiar pain...sigh! Turns out I now have osteoarthritis. I wish I didn't have to do the surgery but this constant pain is so annoying. I hope for a smooth day on Saturday

CarieM--Welcome to Bonesmart! I can understand how you can be nervous about your upcoming surgery on Saturday. But, just remember, after Saturday when you get your shiny new hip you are on the road to recovery and no pain. When you get a chance after surgery, post and let us know how you are doing. You will be amazed at the people on here that really do care how you are progressing. Take it easy! Melanie

Big welcome to you CarieM! As Melanie has told you already you watched and support by an amzing group of knowledgeable people who can answer all you fears and concerns for you. You just need to open up to them. I will also be watching to welcome you after your surgery on Saturday. Try to focus on your recovery rather than the operation itself. You will be fine.

Mike
