THR Seeing the Light!

@lovesstars - My doc said he was fine with giving me another prescription. This was 2 weeks post-op. I was nervous about it but really uncomfortable at night. I took 5 mg nightly until a week ago. Report back!!

I feel very good about op #2 in 2 days. I'm so curious as to whether it will be easier with no arthritis on either side. Thanks for asking :) I'm only a tad anxious because my bf will not be around as much. He is a doc and this week will be in the ICU for 12-hour days. People will be in and out though. I've been fixating on how often to put my cat Albert in his room (he has um his own room). Don't want him jumping on my incision.

Build a basket/pad around incision so even if cat jumps it won’t hurt?

Took the 5 mg 40 minutes ago. Zero effect so far. WTH?!

(Update: it’s been more than an hour with no change. Took another 5 mg)

Does this seem logical?:

Today I showered...stood up for my shower for the first time!
Went in car with ice and pillow for 40 min (was so stir crazy I begged my husband to take me on a drive), walked with two crutches 40 yards.
Now so much pain even on ice and Tylenol.
What the heck? I am 3-½ weeks post!
How is that stuff too much to do?!?

Okay . . . I won't quote what you said to me about expecting too much!!!:heehee: But like you I still have trouble believing I did too much on my first ODIC visit. My next two ODIC visits only lasted 2 days!! For me, I'm finding my ODIC visits are shorter in duration each time!! :rotfl:

Maybe the act of getting into &/or out of your car "torqued" your new hip slightly . . .

Good luck and take those meds to help some with the pain and your old friend ice!! You know the routine!

I have been attached to ice machine for four hours now! 10 mg oxy not really helping. I am thinking of calling the doc and asking for change in meds.

@An54 waiting for doctor on call to call me now. Okay....now he called. He said that maybe these opiates don’t work with me and he got me a prescription for Tramadol. Fingers crossed that it works.

@TripleF100 but c’mon!! I was within the activity parameters! Was so careful!!!!!

Glad you called the doc. Meds work differently on different people. We await news. Stay calm @lovesstars !

Yeah, I like the basket/pad idea around my hip. Will have the handyman/helper who adores Albert, come in often to let him in and out of his little room the first week.

Hi @lovesstars
I'm sorry you're having a bad day. I hope switching to the Tramadol helps.
I'll tag @Mojo333 to post the familiar lavender drawing that I believe her OS gave her, on the reality of recovery.
Hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

My favorite shot of reality...
It does go up just after a couple of twists and turns.
A Tramadol and Tylenol works very well for many.
I graduated to Tramadol.
Hope it works for you dear @lovesstars !
Hope you haven't been overdoing.
Please rest, take meds AND ice

I love that illustration so much that last week I posted it to Instagram.
You guys rock.

Things are going to get easier...
Don't feel like you are behind the curve...I was a whiny mess at a month out:cry:

This is so crazy - I had almost exactly the same relapse at 3.5 weeks. Allow me to quote from my diary, pulled from about 3 weeks and 6 days after surgery: "what?! Seriously, this is longer than I’d figured - it’s been three days and I’m still sore, I still can’t walk without the cane, and I still have to take Tylenol from 5:30 on to get thru the night!?! What the [copulation synonym] did I do to my leg!?!"

While I managed to avoid the same degree of pain you're enduring (and I'm crazy seriously glad you're looking for more puissant meds!!), it was an astonishing demoralizing relapse, completely out of proportion to the sins I'd committed against my recovery. It took more than a week to get out of ODIC jail, and I was miserable, angry, and drained. Just a big ol' man-baby.

Is this a natural part of the process or ODIC? Dunno - too few data points. But in the mean time, hang tight, don't lose hope that this too shall pass, and do everything you can to alleviate the pain! Pain sucks! And you ain't got time for that [excrement synonym]!

@lovesstars, great job of advocating for yourself ... and calling your surgeon. When I saw that your pain was at 7.5-8 ... I thought ... sound the alarm ... that's too high ...

I'm taking oxy and it takes the edge off of things (had surgery Wednesday the 12th) but I have to say: if I were in some serious pain, I can tell that oxy isn't gonna be the medication for me. I get some mild pain relief ... not the slightest bit of high ... So I'm glad you called your doc to report the pain.

Good luck with the Tramadol ... I can't take Tramadol because it interacts with another medication I take (unrelated to the hip) ... Look forward to reading an update.

Oh sorry to hear this! It is horrible when the pain comes back. Looking at what you did activity wise - how did you get in and out of the car? did you back in as far as possible and then swivel to the front and left your op leg in? Was the seat right back, did you use the cushion/pillow and plastic bag to raise the height of the seat and did you use a device to lift the op leg in? The 40yds on crutches doesn’t sound too much so it looks like you twisted something somewhere :-(

I hope you feel much better soon.

@SurreyGirl I assure you I was absolutely super careful. Backed into the car as far as I could (and not a low car, a Toyota Highlander...don’t need to jump up or lean down to get in), had a pillow in the seat — and ice — and had seat back at an obtuse angle.

Did not take tramadol last night. Three hours after I took the oxycodone it began to work. I slept well. Pain this morning, took my Celebrex and tylenol — will go right to Tramadol (probably soon) if I need it.

Mess.

@EL11 I am so thinking of you today!

The sebacks suck, that's all there is to it. Doesn't take much to make the muscles angry after what they have been through. It's like they take turns on the healing and some don't even start the process for many weeks. All I can say is get comfortable in the chair and keep icing. It's like it takes a few of these episodes to get your brain to wrap around just how major this surgery is and how rest is the best recovery aid.
