THR Seeing the Light!

My favourite island. St Lucia... hoping to sail, swim and gentle scuba by then. Not sure I will be up to hobiecats although I love sailing them! I have friends there, some of whom have been supporting me remotely through this....

I have a hot tub on the balcony of my timeshare there and, when my hip was bad last January practically lived in it :-)

Oh oh oh how beautiful! I would imagine that would be a long flight for you! (Like almost 9 hours?!). What a wonderful place to go at a dreary time of year! I have never been to that Island. Two years ago we went to St. Thomas which was my first foray to the Virgin Islands. Just think — maybe the only reason you might be in the hot tub this year is to enjoy the sunset with your shiny cocktail. :swim:

Nice thought! By the time of my next holiday we had been upgraded to a beautiful villa with small rooftop pool but the spiral stairs leading up to the area were awful on the hip. Still had a nice time but there were 92 steps to the beach so I didn’t get much sleep with severe stabbing pains from overdoing it. So glad that is all over with. The recovery is going slowly but I know it will be worth it...

You know, I can really relate to being in paradise and not being able to enjoy it. We were in Italy for 8 months this past year on academic sabbatical. I had all those symptoms you talked about — I didn’t know that my bone had died and collapsed last December — yet I walked all over the country — sobbing as I walked. My husband was sure it was “all in my head” and I was undiagnosed until my return to the States at the end of June. So so weird. He remembers the food, the scenery, the sea....I remember the pain, praying, crying, begging for relief. Life is strange.

Absolutely. I had been diagnosed two years before with bone in bone but our wonderful NHS insisted I lost weight so it got worse and worse....so three holidays in pain and each one progressively worse. But on the other side now hence the “Hopefully Hippy” bit!

I feel like it is a fine line between diagnosis/optimal shape for surgery and the concept of ‘waiting too long’. I think if we have to wait too long it begins to impact our ability to heal afterwards. Again, just my two cents.

Well I would agree with that. I am taking time to heal and get confident. I did lose 2 stone before the op which then got delayed so I put some back on again and my gait etc was very off and I walked with a stick for well over a year.

Still can’t walk much distance without crutches as still hurting a bit when I put weight on it. although it varies and I am virtually pain free otherwise. Sleeping well now too. I will get some answers from the OS when I see him on 24th September. Onwards!

personally orchestrate world peace. (Don’t worry, not doing that either).

Someone here (BoneSmart) usually gives me my first good laugh of the day.
You win today!
Hope you have a good one :)

So...powers that be...let me ask your advice. Niece’s wedding 1500 miles away on week 7 of my recovery (remember, I am a Posterior). Possible for me to go?

Also — December trip to India? 24 hour plane flight? Crazy idea? What do you guys think????
It's one of those you really can't say how it will workout kind of deals. The bad part about a trip like that is part way in if it's not working out there is no stopping the ferris wheel. At 6 weeks I was tying my shoes, washing my feet and using the regular toilet. I made a few 3 or so hour drives but got out and walked around every hour or so. I never want to take a 24hr plane trip so I can't say much about that.

:hi:Hope you are settling in to this recovery routine...
I know it's mundane business but we'll worth the non-effort.

Hope your day is sweet!

Nothing much to see here. Move right along. Just somehow found myself back in ODIC. Determined not to take oxy. But darn...

:no-fin: Take the meds, rest, ice and elevate and try again another day.

Oh no! So sorry. I hope it's a very short visit to the ODIC.
Please keep us posted.
Feel better soon!

Oh my stars @lovesstars
It never hurts until we stop it seems.

Just remember, just because you can...doesn't mean you should.:nah:

Reset for the weekend.
Healing hugs:friends:

@lovesstars i hope you do a blog about your trip to India and how long is the flight for you?. It is a country I find fascinating.

You are quite correct, it is a nine hour flight to St Lucia. BA has a sale so I splashed out on a First Class ticket to get there. My first time! No worries with the hip by then I hope and I usually wear flight socks in any case.

Champagne is an excellent blood thinner ;-)

As a recovering member of the ODIC club, the massage I had from the Physio yesterday helped and I am sleeping really well now. So much so that I woke up thinking it was Saturday. So I demanded breakfast from hubby. Truffled scrambles eggs yummy! This treat is normally reserved for weekends in September so bless him, he gave me an odd look, and cooked them anyway. It was only when I said “yummy, I really like Saturday mornings” when he burst out laughing and told me what day it was. Doh!

I hope you are getting much better and that your OS gives you good new re the Indian trip x

Does this seem logical?:

Today I showered...stood up for my shower for the first time!
Went in car with ice and pillow for 40 min (was so stir crazy I begged my husband to take me on a drive), walked with two crutches 40 yards.
Now so much pain even on ice and Tylenol.
What the heck? I am 3-½ weeks post!
How is that stuff too much to do?!?

Yes, I read activity guidelines...but MAN this is ridiculous.
This is really really slow going.

@lovesstars , yes, it's non-linear, just like that funny graph with the squiggly line that has been posted here and there. I got knocked out a couple of times with melt-down exhaustion. Two steps forward, one step back/ sideways/pirouette . But then you will have sudden progress that is very heartening. For me it's happening just after the 8 week mark. Hang in there. It gets better.

@lovesstars You will get more "official" advice than mine, but in my experience, it goes in fits and starts. 3 1/2 weeks is pretty soon. I took a 20-minute walk after 5 weeks and felt great, then a couple of days later took a shorter one and was in agony.

I am always nervous about taking an NSAID, but my surgeon said it was OK for the short term and that I could take it in combination with Tylenol Arthritis AND until the 6-week mark I was taking Oxycodone to sleep. The Advil helped me the most. Again: This is just me. I am 2 days from the 7-week mark and today I feel blissfully normal.

It's understandable that you'd be impatient! Hang in there!

Ok I am on Tylenol arthritis every 8 hours and I do have oxycodone 5 mg to take...but I haven’t had them in 9 days and only have 13 left. I guess it might be ok to take one?? I am at a 7.5-8 right now while on ice machine and elevated.... (doctor office sort of shaming me about taking them)
