THR Second one - hope it's better than the first

Hi guys. I have ordered my op report and x-rays, knowing our national health should get them by Christmas!!!! Had physio on Friday serious waste of time! She is going to sign me off after my next appointment. Good news though she is leaving so will be seeing a chap next time and maybe he will be more helpful and I will not be signed off! A friend of mine mentioned hydro therapy so will ask if he can refer me to that. She asked me to do a lunge with my op leg. Goodness me a sharp pain went right through my thigh and have been in pain since. Have been icing but my leg is really swollen. The joys eh?? On the positive we are having a mini heatwave here in the UK and it's a bank holiday weekend so will enjoy the sunshine in the garden. Before my lunge, my walking has been better!!! Enjoy your weekend all xx

Hi @Bevlah.

I've been following your recovery and can understand your frustration with your progress (or, in your opinion, lack of it!). I know our situations are very different, and you won't like hearing this, but when you look back you will realise how very early on you are in this journey of recovery.

I think your friend's suggestion of a course of hydrotherapy is an excellent one. My physio referred me after my 2014 revision surgery. It was a 3 week course, just 6 1-hour sessions. Everything hurt even more, and I was 6 months post-op. But the important thing was to continue on my own afterwards (local pool), and then I saw the improvement, including ROM. I had a further course after my next revision - it got me back into the routine of regular pool visits, and the extra warmth of the hydrotherapy pool helped.

If your physio won't refer you, is there a local pool you can use? You could ask your physio for some gentle water exercises that you could start with.

Hope your pain improves and that you enjoy this glorious bank holiday weekend. Not a cloud in the sky here in South Wales!

Hi @helenium thx for stopping by .I need to find a pool that doesn't have a ladder to get in as I would struggle getting in and out!!! I know it's early days and I have come a long way when I look back! I just don't think the docs give you enough info about what happens next. It feels like a conveyor belt and they make out that all will be fine and dandy at 6 weeks. They don't manage your expectations and at the mo I just feel disappointed. Well actually rather hot as I am in my garden. Finally the sun yaaayy!!! Just had lunch with my mum and Anika rice was sat next to us! Not in a boiler suit though!! Take care

Hi Bev,
I'll bet you'd like to lunge at the physio who requested you put your poor leg through that punishment.
I know I would. Here you are all swollen and suffering. I'm sorry.
I'm happy you'll have the opportunity to get a fresh perspective with a different physio, hopefully it helps.
Sending a hug with hopes and wishes you soon find relief and the ability to plow forward.
@Bevlah

I don't know about the UK, but here the Arthritis Foundation has pool exercise programs. I've been fortunate and my ROM is greatly increase over my pre-op ROM. I did a lot of movement exercises on my own in bed from the start and kept my muscles loose. I also have a hot tub that is nice to sit in and stretch.

@Bevlah Poor hip and joints they really are a pain aren't they in more ways than one! The thing that has helped me with pain and tightness is the water, the warmth is wonderful, prior to this bit of surgery I was walking forwards, backwards and sideways twice a week and I could actually feel myself getting stronger, before I had this revision in January aquarobics was my saving grace and I know it will take time I do hope this might help you also.Hugsxx

Glad you were able to get some good weather...it certainly lifts my spirits.
Have a great day:)

@clodaghcov bless you, so many revisions! I have been looking at pools near me will also try your walking backwards and sideways thing!
:flwrysmile:

I am sure it will help and somehow there is that factor that you are helping yourself safely, the effort bit is getting dressed afterwards but I always feel better, once stitches are out I will be there, BUT I am never having physio again!! just my own walking like Josephine says, I know they pushed me too hard! Enjoy every little bit of sunshinexx

Hope you have your Fascinator and Champagne ready :heehee:
At least it will be noon where you live. I have no excuse to pour a glass at 6:00 a.m.
And I don't like Mimosa's. Don't mess with my Champs!
Can't wait to see the dress :happydance:Better be good!

I hope you're doing ok, Bev. How have you been feeling lately?
@Bevlah

@Layla yes very excited to see her dress she is such a beautiful girl!! Am ok. Working hard at the stretches and think I may just be able to move my op leg slightly more open to the side. We are talking centimeters but I will take that! Walking is much better but still struggle with stairs. Have to hold on with both hands going up and down! My muscles are incredibly weak I know. My concern at the moment is the swelling op scar, is still the same as it was 3 months ago. I know I am not too great at the icing so will make more of an effort! I know you love the ice....... But really shouldn't it have gone down by now? 4 months and all that. Glad my walking is more normal though

:flwrysmile:

Hey...centimeters is better than nothing. I'm glad you're seeing improvement no matter how small.
I was told by my OS and both his PA's that swelling can take up to a year to completely dissipate. That leaves you quite a few months left to go. Unless you're out tippin em back like a wild woman :martini: :beer:
for the wedding, try a big old ice pack while you're waiting to get a glimpse of the dress.

Great news that you feel the walking is better. The stairs will come. You're only 4 months out.
I'll be thinking of you tomorrow when I'm oohing and ahhing! :friends:
@Bevlah

:wave:hope you know we are all rooting for you...mostly ME:roseshwr:
And everybody else:unsure:

Well @Mojo333 you were right! 4 months was a turning point for me! I am walking up the stairs normally now, well not quite normally as I still have to pull myself up with the rails and it hurts but I use both legs! I can even go down sometimes without holding on!!! My walking is alot quicker and no wobbling. I can sit on a chair with no arms now as I can get up using my leg muscles. This has all been since I have been seeing the PT and doing the daily excercises they give me. I feel nearly normal and may even be glad I had it done now! However, the lower half of the scar which is on my thigh is still very swollen and numb and feels like I am still sitting on the remote control!! Will this ever go away????

@Bevlah :wave:
So so happy to hear from you and know that things are getting better.:happydance:
I've been extra busy but that certainly made my day.
I had tightness and numbness at incision site but not really swelling probably on up to 6 months particularly on one side.
I had, and rarely still do, have the sitting on something
aggravation...might want to tag Jo to get what fors...
Glad your PT has helped you with mobility issues..still there may be some things that are being aggravated as you said you've had limited mobility your whole life.
Hope you are still icing!:ice:

Great news, Bev! So wonderful to read this morning.
The best news was you expressing "I feel nearly normal and may even be glad I had it done now". :yay:
I'm glad PT has helped you.
I had numbness around my incision area, just in certain spots only, for several months. Don't recall swelling though. Do you still ice the area while your sitting around watching tv? Would definitely try as Mojo suggested.
Hopefully it helps.
A great weekend to you!
@Bevlah

How was your weekend, Bev?
I hope it was good. The weather here was lovely. We lost the extreme heat and humidity
that was hanging on. Definitely not my favorite. I finally got to a garden center and bought some flowers so it looks like Summer on my deck. I hope things continue to improve for you. It sounds like you are making good strides. Long may it continue. A great week to you!
@Bevlah

Hi@layla yes all good apart from the blooming swelling! I have shown it to os and a few doctors who all say it's normal!! Not so good with the icing I am afraid....... We are having great weather here! It's been warm for a while now which is very unusual for the UK! Long may it continue. Thanks for stopping by x
