THR Second one - hope it's better than the first

Hi @Sarahk I had an x-ray at 3 months and everything looked ok apparently. I just can't believe apart from walking better I just don't feel any further forward!!! I went to see a PT and am going back this Friday but after doing the excercises for 3 weeks I have no more ROM. I have googled it so much and keep coming back to this is not right! I understand my muscles need waking up as they are tight but really? I am literally about as nimble as a plank of wood. In fact a plank of wood had more movement! Sounds like I am in the self pity club, but I am just frustrated!!!!! Appreciate your reply though, thank you

I was looking at physio more than for exercise but measuring ROM - getting hard numbers for surgeon

Aww, Bev, I'm sorry you're feeling so down and out. Would you consider asking Jo for her opinion.
It sounds like your x-ray is only one month old and all looks good. So that's a positive.
I'll be curious to see what PT has to say on Friday when you discuss your lack of progress with the exercises over the past three weeks.

I'm sorry I don't have anything worthwhile to offer other than sending some love and a warm hug your way.
Consider having Jo weigh in on where she feels you should be at this point, given your history.
Hope your week is peaceful :console2:
@Bevlah

I cannot believe this as EVERYBODY on here has more ROM after their op. I can touch my toes but that's about it.
Not everybody Bevlah. I too am struggling with ROM. I still cannot put my sock on the OP leg without my sockaid which happens to be a magazine folded up :heehee:. My inner thigh is as tight as ever. I cannot lay on the bed and stretch by dangling my leg off the bed without pain like PT would like me to...let alone the other exercises for psoas and piriformis stretch...I just cannot get in those positions and it's extremely frustrating. Just want you to know you are not alone. We must continue to try and see what works. Muscles have memory....too good I'm afraid and they don't want to change....but don't give up.

Hi @Josephine me again! I am nearly 4 months post op and have absolutely no more ROM than before the op. I still have thigh pain when getting up and off a chair. I still struggle with the stairs blah blah. I know it's early days etc but it's the lack of ROM that's really upsetting me. I have started with a physio but after 3 weeks there is no difference. I can't put socks on etc so it's very frustrating

I am literally as stiff as an ironing board!! I just need to know will it ever get better or do I just have to accept that it won't, considering how I got to the point of this operation in the first place.

I have never had much ROM all my life so are the muscles just never going to work? I know that muscles have a memory but mine never worked in the first place!

I am 53 but feel and move like a 90 year old. Do I just have to accept it now that this is my life still? I had a lateral approach, no cement and have 2 screws holding the prosthesis in place. I don't take any pain relief and didn't do much PT up until now on your advice, just waking. I sit at a desk all day but get up every hour and do stretches. Thanks

Hi @Bumblebee oh you poor thing! It's very frustrating isn't it? Did you have much ROM before your op? Was it just OA that was your problem?

I am worried that I will never get any ROM. I have had this issue all of my life so I think it may be too late to get my muscles moving. That's if I even have any! I would just love to cross my legs or be able to bring my bent knee up to my chest to paint my toe nails!

I constantly stare at people doing these everyday things and wonder why I can't! The hip replacement was meant to give me this movement but it seems to have failed me. Feeling quite depressed about it all and hate moaning! I will keep an eye on your thread for your progress. Thanks for replying

@Josephine I have attached 3 photos.

The first one is the widest I can open my legs.
The second one is the highest I can lift my leg.
The third one is me trying to lift my leg to cross it over the other one, obviously isn't happening!

@Layla can you please change my thread as I am now nearly 4 months! To "4 months post op and no more ROM than before the op" thank you!!

@Bevlah...I so hate that you are struggling with your range of motion. I wonder if the fact that Protrusio acetabuli was in play, and if I remember correctly, you had pelvic reconstruction...could be a factor in your recovery.
Do you have your current imaging that Jo can see?
I know you wanted certain things from this surgery and there is no one size fits all surgery or recovery.
Sounds like OS needs to weigh in on why things are so tight?
I really hate to hear you frustrated and disappointed.:console2:

Someone will change your thread title as per your request.

@Mojo333 the PT said I won't get any more range of movement when I saw her last. I was too upset to question it but I will this Friday!! I don't have an up to date xray I am afraid. I know it wasn't just a standard hip replacement and if someone said be patient your ROM will come in a time scale, then I would be fine. It's just the os wasn't hopeful or the PT! I don't want to do the splits, but just move normally. I don't know if you checked out my Photos in my earlier post but my ROM really is that bad! I seem to keep coming back to the same issue don't I? It's just getting me down. Hope you and your family are all ok and thanks for stopping by

:yay:

Hi, Bev
Would you consider looking for a therapist to work with other than, Negative Nelly?
I would ask her on Friday to please back up her comment that you'll never increase your ROM.
Depending upon her answer, I think I'd look for someone who offers you hope. Why work with someone who has already put perimeters on your recovery? I wouldn't waste my time with her.

If a pedi will lighten your spirits, try sitting on a kitchen chair and putting the foot you want to work on a step stool. If it's not close enough, find something to place on top of the stool, thick hard covered book etc
See if that helps.
Big hugs for today!
@Bevlah

@Layla negative nelly love it but I do see your point! I have tried everything to paint my toes I just cannot reach my foot no matter what I do. I really am that restricted! Checkout my earlier photos to get an idea!!! Hope you're well lovey

Hi @Bevlah, I'm 8 months post op and still can't completely get my foot on the opposite knee but it is getting easier. Gradually, I managed to get my op side foot up far enough to put my sock on without the sock aid. I can also get that foot up on to the edge of the bath to dry it. I find it harder first thing in the morning but it gets easier as the day goes on. Can you kneel down? I also found that difficult but recently have been able to for a few minutes to weed the garden. It seems as that got easier the sock-putting-on was also easier. I thought I was going to need arm extensions!

@EmEm hi lovey thx for your reply. I haven't knelt down for 10 years so no I haven't tried and to be honest I wouldn't be able to get back up!! I will keep trying to stretch and be patient

I don't have an up to date xray I am afraid.
You can get your xrays provided you have the dates they were taken and your hospital number. It will probably cost you about £10. Just phone the xray department and ask if you can order them. They will either send you a request form to complete or you can go into the department to do it there. They will pass it on to the member of staff designated to do these. They will put these xrays on a cd-rom. When it's ready for collection, they will require an ID like your driving licence of similar and the cheque. There will also be instructions on how to access the data on the cd. Then you can post them on here. I would very much like to see an xray of the PAO and two of the THR, front view and side view

Periacetabular” means around the acetabulum (hip socket). “Osteotomy” means to cut bone. Therefore, PAO means to cut the bone around the acetabulum and reposition the hipsocket. The PAO is a very effective procedure for the treatment of symptomatic acetabular dysplasia.

I'm pretty sure that is what Josephine suspects pelvic reconstruction involved.

Hope your day is better...just do what you can right now and try to stay positive.
I'm thinking of you.

:wave: @Bevlah
Wondering if you have been feeling any better, I'd not ROM wise, at least hip pain wise.

I hate that you have been feeling so frustrated and disappointed with your results.
Miss seeing you on the forum..just wanted to wish you a peaceful Weekend!:) :-) (:

Missing you too, Bev.
Hope you can get those x-rays for Jo to look at.
It's sad that you're struggling so.
Prayers you find relief soon.
Hugs :console2:
