MUA RTKR Done!

Im going to start going to the pool at our gym this week...doc wanted to wait til the incision was completely healed and it is..I had trouble swimming before the surgery because of the lack of ROM in this leg..most of the damage was on the lateral side of the knee, so when I would swim it would feel as though something was ripping in my knee...hopefully the water will do the trick!
I have same issues as you I am 12 weeks today and hospital check up yesterday they think it's tight leg class last night she manipulated knee pushing down on it to get straight and left note for physio today to do more I have to say it was not nice I sat on edge of table and had to push my leg into her arm then relax a moment then she pushed it back under the table until it was really painful and she said take deep breaths and she the held it there she did it five times and at end my bend was 105 I left and as soon as met hubby burst into tears as I feel I have gone backwards
I can do rotation on bike with seat quite normal now she says make it lower so it pulls more the only nice thing she suggested and you might like is to put any armband on ankle and float on back In water maybe using the long bendy thing to help support your back so you get nice float and your leg automatically straightens
I wish you well am sure we will get there

The push and take a deep breath shouldn't happen. It should be a gentle stressing and hold, not a dramatic pain and hold.

Hi Laura, sorry to hear you're not feeling well and your Rom is not where you want it. I'm sure once the swelling goes away (does it really go away???) you will see better results. I'm scared today as I'm finally going to PT today, I have not worked with a PT IN 10 days so I feel like I've lost some of what I gained, only time will tell. I will bring my pain killers with me for sure.

Hi Laura. Please don't feel disheartened. It is still early days and like @Jamie said there is often a regression before progress.

I'm going to say it again and again:
PT should not hurt. Pushing to the point of hurting can slow down your progress.
PT should not hurt. Pushing to the point of hurting can slow down your progress.
PT should not hurt. Pushing to the point of hurting can slow down your progress.

It's your knee. You are in charge. If your therapist is hurting you, tell her/him to stop.

Thanks everyone...I didn't have any PT today, which I am glad because I spent most of the day sleeping..had to take hubby to work at 6am and then home and slept til 1pm..got up and ran to grocery store and bank and was back in bed at 2 and slept til 5pm...had some work tonite and back in bed now at 930...I am just feeling kind of over this right now...Im not sure how Im going to handle PT tomorrow, I may let him push me as far as I can or I just may say screw it...I have my appt with OS on Thursday..Im ready for my life back...not having a lot of pain right now...slowly coming off the pain meds..those OXY really mess with my head...hopefully I will feel better tomorrow....Good work everyone!

Hi Laura,

Don't get discouraged, therapy is a slow process we need to help us get better. One thing my therapists have all agreed on is that if you stretch a muscle to the point it hurts, it will contract and hurt your ROM. If your therapist is hurting you, you have to tell them to back off. Pain will not help you. I hope you feel better soon.

Paul

Laura - watch my lips (well the words on the page) no pain!!! no argument! there will be no pain tomorrow, only working to the point of pain and STOP... if you cause swelling by pushing too much causing pain your knee can't bend. All my PTs are on this wavelength. Girl, you have to play the long hand at PATIENCE.
Take care of you and hasten slowly - Maggie x

I totally agree

Laura...it sounds like the oxys have really given you a bad case of the blues. Go back and read your posts as you were coming of them before. I can totally understand how you want this over, but we are in it now and have to make the best of it as we gradually heal. Dont give up on PT, but refuse anything that causes you pain. Unload on your OS on Thursday. Call your GP and unload on him/her. But don't you give up!!!

I agree with @annie1234.... unload on us....

you are strong - dig deep and do what your body needs you to do...be gentle and exercise Patience!! Sorry if this sound like a nag but that is my special talent - nag nag nag... be nice to you:hugzz:

You know, I think we BS's should have a pact to have PATIENCE as a tattoo - LOL

I use two words with my PT, "that's It", it's my signal we are at the limit and can't go any further. Use it just at the discomfort zone and it keeps us from reaching a painful conclusion.
I saw another post that recommended heat on the back of the knee to help loosen the quads followed by stretch and the ice. Then @ referee54 commented about use only ice on the front, because heat on the knee would encourage more fluid and swelling. I think this is good advice. I plan to warm towel heat my back before I stretch today.

One should never, ever experience this type of pain in recovery. Take everything to the point of discomfort and no further.

This is a great example of excellent communication. Remember that the PT works for you---not the other way around. Do this:
[Bonesmart.org] RTKR Done!

Draw that line in the sand and do not let a PT---or anybody--put you into that much pain.

Please remember that recovery is not a linear process---it looks more like this:
[Bonesmart.org] RTKR Done!
Please note that the general direction is up---but you you will have good days, some plateaus, and some days that are real boogers. You just have to be patient and realize that this voyage to your destination of being fully recovered will take you longer than you had planned.

Home from PT ...started this session different from all the other..got there 1/2 hour early, not on purpose, and they told me I could warm up on the bike before seeing the PT...Did the bike, the knee press, chair bends and extension exercise...then saw Brad...he massaged the knee and did a ROM at 90....we worked it some more and then went to do the wall exercise...it was bending nicely and then all of a sudden I felt this pain, saw stars and then everyone heard this snap! I screamed out Stop and put my hand on my knee and realized that Brad's hand was not there..it was of my own doing...the hubby said I looked as thought I was going to kill someone! He helped me straighten the knee out and did some more easy bends and final ROM was 95! That is the most ever besides the MUA...OS appt tomorrow so we will see how it goes...not very much pain at all right now after the ice at the office....quit taking the Oxy, only on Norco now....am experiencing a lot of pain in my IT band and hamstrings..I have a history of IT band and lower back issues, I think these may be hindering my ROM as well...will put the heating pad on those areas tonight....

Wow, that sounds scary! Glad you're not in a lot of pain.

Thanks Pax, and no, not a lot of pain at all..and after the snap I really didn't have too much pain either...my OS said it was scar tissue breaking up..it is in the same area where I have been feeling the tightness coming back after the MUA last week...the OS said he heard lots of snapping and crackling while he was doing the MUA..It was a bit scary, but mostly because I wasn't expecting it...

AH, you gave yourself a MWA- "Manipulation Without Anesthesia". Tough lady! I did that a couple weeks ago by accident while chilling on a park swing during a dog walk. Dog tugged the wrong way, and :yikes:. Hurt like crazy at the time but, honestly, my bend has been a little better ever since.

Keep wondering if I did a mini MWA today, kept feeling a pinching sensation along the edge of my kneecap as I was walking, when I sat down and my knee bent I had blinding pain. Now the tissue on the side of the knee near the kneecap feels "crackly" when I bend and straighten the knee.

Oh my gosh! I think I probably would have fallen to the floor and cried...instead you sound so positive about it!!! Hope your ROM is good for the doc tomorrow and not too much discomfort tonight.
