Good for you! I can't do the bike yet, can't get around for some reason, even though I am 111. I can on the glide recumbent unit though.

Woohoo, a complete rotation is AWESOME! I have so much hope that if my knee ever needs a MUA that it will be a blessing. Keep up the inspiring good news.

Brenda

Thanks...today my knee was pretty stiff at PT...we got it to 88 today, which is pretty much the same as it as been since Tuesday...but getting it to that was a lot of work..the doc did say that I would loose some ROM before I gained more...got around on the bike again, but again, not a pretty sight! I did "cheat" a little, my hip still goes out but at least not as much as yesterday...today I am fighting a cold and some asthma so I am pretty drained..slept most of the day..made a little dinner, took a shower and now back in bed..tomorrow Im hoping to feel better..do NOT need breathing issues on top of the knee issues! Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I'm praying you can get that cold handled, I would hate for you to get sick, it's not fun as I know. Have a great nights sleep.

Brenda

oh no not cold.... drink lots and stay warm! I agree you don't respiratory & knee issues together. We are not greedy, just one at a time thank you;) Take care Maggie x

This knee recovery is such a roller coaster...the fatigue and "blues" are back..I did end up with a bit of a head cold which irritated my asthma but it seems to be under control now...I worked with my knee all weekend and it is bending better, but still not at 90 yet...had the hubby massage it multiple times and did the ice after each workout...my workouts are not extreme, basically heel slides, straight leg lifts, marching in place, hanging leg off of the bed and swinging it slightly (this feels REALLY good) and then worked on getting it straight...Once it gets to a certain point it just STOPS! I have PT today so I will see how much ROM I gained over the weekend...if I can just see that it is improving weekly I would be fine with that! The MUA definitely did some good but to be honest I feel like it is becoming tight in those areas again..is that EVEN possible??? Think I might try the pool this week at the gym, the incision is completely healed..Wed. it will be 8 weeks ......I just NEED to see some improvement!!!! Hope everyone had a good weekend....

It may just be swelling in the capsule around the knee, which might not even be visible, that is limiting the flex right now. After all you've been through, I certainly understand you wanting to see quick improvement, but you've been at this long enough to know that recovery is up to the knee, not us. Take a deep breath and know that body mechanics will work given time. We're all behind you and wish only the best for you!

Did you do the two hang positions?
1. Sit in chair, get another chair with pillow on it, position it so when you place your leg across the gap it goes from your ankle on the other chair to the thigh on yours. Should allow you leg to group with knee in middle. Now lt gravity work and rub it gently. Increase your time every day until you get 5 min.
2. This one hurts at first. Slide to edge of bed, get a roll pillow turn on your stomach and place both legs over edge. Scoot down until bottom
Of knee is at edge, lift up leg and put pillow on knee cap. Now let that leg down and down and down until it hangs. I was only able to go a minute first time, now I am at 5. My ROM went from 8 to 1 in two weeks.

Wberry: yes, we work on this at the PT and at home...the PT would try to push down the knee while on a towel but it felt like it was jarring it, and I wasn't having that..so that is when we tried the exercise on the stomach, much better..
Charlotte: I agree that it might be some swelling that is forbidding the knee to bend, but it is the tight band across my knee cap that has me a bit concerned...My hubby also works my knee cap a couple of times a day and it just barely moves, so I know that also prohibits the leg to bend...I just figured that at 8 weeks I would be back to work and back at the gym working on my stamina..nothing crazy, but I for sure thought I would be back to riding my bike..I will try swimming this week and see if I can get some ROM that way..

Sending you some warm healing thoughts, Spencieca, really hope you start to feel some positive progress soon!

slow and steady Laura - swinging the leg is a great exercise and I agree it does feel nice. You are doing well - hang in there - Maggie x

I responded on my thread too but if you haven't yet, try heating up the quad before you try to work it and the other thing that's really been helping is to do the heel slides on the wall and hold the lowest position for as long as you can stand it, I have been doing 20 seconds and trying to work up to 30. Something about the gravity of doing it on the wall helps me, I also rest for a full minute between attempts with my legs straight up the wall to help with swelling. Just FYI - my flex is good but my knee cap also barely moves and the space under it where the fat pad used to be is a tight, hot ball of something, no idea what (old scar tissue? where does that stuff go anyway? broken up and went...where?!)

Sorry about the cold and congestion - feel better!

Laura, sorry, I was thinking more about the short amount of time since your MUA. Didn't that cause some additional swelling? Maybe I have your story confused with someone else's. I can relate to being frustrated but you have had a much tougher go than I.

Went to PT today and he worked the knee pretty good...he massaged it and rocked it and stretched it and just about anything he possibly could do to loosen it up, he did it...my IT band was extremely tight as well as my hamstrings and back..with all of that work he measured at 90....that is what I left at on Friday..he really wanted to get it to 95 but my leg refused to cooperate...I did the re-cumbrant bike today and couldn't get around and then did the sitting up bike and made it around a few times...I feel like I took a few steps backwards today...no PT tomorrow so I am just going to rest it and ice and elevate and do some mellow heel slides...I have an appt. with the OS on Thursday....

It's frustrating, I was moving along well, now I have hit a wall. Only got from 111 to 113, and that was a stretch. All my work and stretching didn't deliver much results. My PT said things will improve as the swelling goes down. Well it is a stubborn barrier, because it keeps coming back.

I agree WB....we are supposed to work it so it doesn't get tight and loose ROM but if we work it too much then it swells and we get less ROM..there is a very fine line between working it too much and working it just right...I have yet found that line...I know a lot of people in here believe in the no pain lots of gain but that hasn't worked for me yet either...PT said another MUA might be in my future..REALLY???? I will talk to the OS on Thursday..I do not regret the MUA at all, it did get me past the hump, I could barely get in the 80's before, usually around 75 or so...every body's body is unique...hang in there and let's hope we all find our "fine line"!

Ouch, I wouldn't want you to have to go through that again. Maybe you need hydro therapy, you swim much?

Im going to start going to the pool at our gym this week...doc wanted to wait til the incision was completely healed and it is..I had trouble swimming before the surgery because of the lack of ROM in this leg..most of the damage was on the lateral side of the knee, so when I would swim it would feel as though something was ripping in my knee...hopefully the water will do the trick!

What you're experiencing is what most people have after an MUA. They have swelling and some loss of ROM that gradually improves. But, as you've noticed, trying to "work" at getting the ROM can cause the swelling to continue or even increase. It is a fine line between gentle activity and letting those traumatized tissues heal again.

Please don't try to compare your MUA with anyone else's. Your body and your knee are unique and you must do what works for you. Your improvements may go slower than someone else's. For most people a more gentle approach of bends and stretches along with walking short distances works when combined with rest, ice and elevation. If you have pain, take something for it. You want to keep any inflammation minimized.

Water exercise is good, but watch it. The extra support of the water feels very good and it's so easy to overdo things. Start slowly and you can always add more time or activity. If you overdo it, you'll set yourself back a bit.
