Congrats on a great nights sleep and for doing groceries by yourself. I can't even phantom going out on my own but then again I have not tries driving yet, lol.
Hope today is a good Groot day. :)

Thanks Brenda....had a pretty good day yesterday, felt like I had a bit more ROM..showed my hubby and he said " are we sure you need an MUA"...its like the few days before you have a big surgery or doc appt and all of a sudden the matter at hand seems to get better? why is that?? I have PT today so we shall see what the numbers are and if there is pain when attempting to get to the infamous ROM...Easy day today, only kitty sit and PT and then working on my home office and the bills...

Just got back from PT, had the gentle one today..I did some warm up and she did a good massage and even did a new exercise...well...ROM.....70...AGHHHH...I thought for sure it was going to be 90! I think "my 90" is much different then the "real 90"..I like mine better..LOL...Got set up for PT 4 days next week and then 3 days for the next 2 weeks...PA called me back today and said to expect to be set back a week or 2 with pain and swelling and they are re-ordering the CPM machine and pain meds...Im going to just go with the flow and not worry about Monday and the MUA..Im banking on that it is going to work perfect..the doc said that sometimes you have to go backwards to move forward..also trying to believe that this is not due to something that I did wrong..I will continue to question if I worked hard enough in the beginning before my PT, am I just a wimp ? Just took some meds, I worked hard in PT and now Im a bit sore..chat soon! Hope everyone is having a good day..

.I will continue to question if I worked hard enough in the beginning before my PT, am I just a wimp ? Just took some meds, I worked hard in PT
No. It's not because you didn't work hard enough - and you are not a wimp.

I'm sure you've read it here, but maybe you've been advised differently elsewhere: You don't have to work hard at PT in order to get good ROM after a TKR. In fact, working hard can actually slow down your recovery. It irritates those wounded soft tissues, making them angry and swollen. Then, of course, your knee can't bend, because it is filled up with swelling.
Less is more for this recovery. Small amounts of gentle exercise will achieve far more than trying to work your knee hard.

Many people in the UK do no formal PT at all. They just do exercises at home, from a printout given them. Their results are just as good as those who have intensive PT.

Josephine has had two knee replacements, with no formal PT at all - and her ROM is great.

I had only three formal PT sessions after my revision to TKR and I did almost no exercises at home. My ROM is about 130.

I had no formal PT at all after my left TKR and only did a minimal amount of exercises, and my ROM is now about 125.

So, please don't go blaming yourself or feeling guilty because you need a MUA. That's not a failure. It just happens sometimes.
I hope it goes well and you can move forward in your recovery.:flwrysmile:

hi Laura - what a shame the real ROM is not on a par with yours idea of what it is... did you check the goniometer?:giggle:
I can remember sitting in a chair in the very early days (day 4???) and the hospital PT came in to do the usual torture - leg lifts etc and I asked her what she thought my ROM was - I was confident it was at least 90 cause that's what it looked like from where I was sitting - about 70/75 was the answer... I was deflated. Ho hum so much for our perceptions.

I can understand being unsettled leading up to your MUA on Monday - try and relax and see this as another hurdle on the recovery trail. Take care of you - happy Easter - cheers Maggie x

Ha - I remember the same Maggie - before my first PT I thought I was an easy 90+ but his silly little machine said 74!

Laura - I'm hoping that my experience is the normal one and you'll be feeling better and glad you did it much sooner than later! Last night I was having dinner with my husband and he sort of freaked out and pointed and I looked down and my leg was under the chair by a good bit, just as casual as you please, I didn't even notice! Pre-MUA more often than not by the end of dinner I either had my leg propped on a chair or the table itself!

Thanks Teresa...Im going in with the hopes of it getting better and will do my best to help it get there...you will never know if you never try! Hope you have a great weekend and congrats on eating at the "big" person table like a "big" person..hehehe

My PT has me do a entire series of stretches and ROM exercises and we always do the measurement at the end when I am my most limbered up. Before the PT I spend 10-15 min on the push recumbent machine. She varies the distance to allow either max extension or max flex action by varying the seat distances. I also get a lot of massaging of the joint between exercises and stretches. This has helped me a lot on my ROM.

I had a friend in church that did a MUA, he said it helped loosen things up and get him moving forward again. Let's hope it does the same for you. Good vibes going out to you.

So today the hubby wanted to go for a run on the beach so I told him I would go and sit on a chair, enjoy the sun and wait for him....well I had to go pee...went for a walk down the beach to the restrooms and back, 45 min total...whew...that was a LONG walk! I tried to concentrate on walking the correct way, but hubby said I was still swinging my hip..the hardest part was trying to walk up the short dirt hill to the street and then back down..but the moral of the story is I DID IT! I didn't have a lot of pain per say, but it did get stiff at the end...Just felt good to be normal for a while again...now Im home, showered and icing/elevating as I type...haven't had to take pain meds except at night..tried to go to bed without any but Groot woke me up about midnight pretty angry...Hope everyone has a wonderful Easter/Passover! Life is Good!

I'm originally from Daytona Beach. I miss those walks on the beach so much. You brought back some nice memories for me, thanks. I have found that as my ROM improves, my knee creeks. I read somewhere the tendons will eventually tighten up.

Thanks Maggie! The shower felt really good as did the walk..I'm glad you got to take your "office mates" as I call all my clients pups, on a nice walk..I'm off from work for another week or so due to the MUA..wasn't sure how I might be and don't want to give the pups anything less than my 100%...I ended up cancelling a few new walks..but the humans understand :)

Yep I've also noticed that the people who engage pet sitters or walkers are nice souls. I'm sure you will be back into it soon.
I'll wish you all the best again for tomorrow (1.20 pm on 5th April here) I am sure you will be fine. Post when you can. Maggie x

Congrats on your beach walk, I'm jealous! I was raised in San Diego and I love walking on the beach. Best of luck for tomorrow!

Good luck tomorrow! Is it hard on the new knee to walk on the beach? Uneven ground was hard on my old knees and I haven't tried yet on the new. Would love to walk on the beach but little chance where I live! :rofsign:

Thank you everyone...Yes, it was a little difficult walking on the beach it was low tide so I was able to walk in the hard sand, not the soft..I did struggle when I had to make my way up to the soft sand though..I used to love jogging/walking on the beach with the hubby and still haven't quite accepted the idea that I won't be doing any more running..however, but running is a fast persons walk at best! I could run on a treadmill and not have any pain, but if I walked fast I had pain...it all has to do with the ROM before the surgery, which is why it hurt to swim and bike..the things that MOST people do with arthritis...go figure, I have always been a "little off" when it comes to illnesses or injuries ...Not feeling too anxious about tomorrow, just ready to have it over so I can get back on with my life...Hope everyone is having a wonderful Sunday!
