@Maggie94 my scar is closed but still has scabbing. Would be ok to just massage around it and leave the scar until the scabbing is gone? Thanks

How are you all massaging your knees? I would love to try but have no idea of techniques. Im currently 3 and a bit weeks post op from my revision TKR. Have been reading up on your thread and have enjoyed reading along to the updates. I had my primary tkr at 42 and my revision at 43.

@chereb I would avoid using any lotions or creme until all scabbing is gone and wound is completely closed...what helped me was gentle massage using the finger tips along the side of the knee cap and above the knee where I ,and many others , seem to have what feels like a knot....most of my massage is done in a hot shower to get everything loose...the reason for no cremes or lotions is the risk of infection... I found the massage helped to increase circulation and stimulate my quads...my PT did it very well and always increased my ROM by 6 or 7 degrees after massage....but she really knew what she was doing...gentle rubbing will be fine..never hard enough to hurt

Hi @chereb I'm no axDr but I agree with @vinney....avoid the creme on the incission until scab is healed. If you are careful then sure massage everything else. Maggie x

@Maggie94 @vinny thank you both. I wasn't going to use lotion just my fingers as i know i cant until its completely healed. Going to try later and see how it goes :-)

Ok..well last night did not go as I had hoped...tried to take just a 1/2 tab of Oxy at bed time around 10pm..was still awake and anxious at 12..decided to take the other 1/2 and finally fell asleep around 1:30am..was up at 6am..am I EVER going to get a good night sleep again? I wonder how long it takes a body to adjust to the change in pain meds..I want to sleep and I am tired but I just have this super strong restlessness feeling throughout my entire body..Going to try to get some rest before the festivities this afternoon/evening..

You are still early in recovery, you may be cutting you pain meds back too soon? Takes us all awhile to adjust to the pain meds and the surgery. Plan on at least 12 weeks to recover from the early stages of healing.
Here a link to Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?
Better to just sleep when you can, it will get better,

I might ask my HIV doc about Vicodin...the Tramadol is not agreeing with my stomach or my head or my nerves, to say the least! As long as Vicodin doesn't have ANY type of anti-inflamatory (ibuprofen, NSAIDS) I can take it...what Ive read on the web (we all know it has to be true because it is on the internet! :rotfl:) is Vicodin is an easier step down from Oxycodone and the side effects from weaning off of Vicodin is easier than the Oxy..

Thank you Vinny! Groot is a bit grumpy this morning, I didn't have a very good night sleep and NO naps at all yesterday or the day before...hubby is going to massage Groot really good this morning and then help with some ROM exercises...Not sure how Groot is going to react to being in a slight raised shoe today AND on a boat...we shall see..

Hi Spencieca, sorry to hear that you are having withdrawal symptoms, this is not something I suspected. Gru and I are sending prayers and positive thoughts your way.

I can't wait to hear how your anniversary boat surprise went. Sweet dreams!!

Just be sure when you're trying to step down from one drug to another that you take the maximum amount of the new drug for a few days as you transition. If you don't, you are much more likely to get those symptoms that are bothering you. Taking 1 50mg Tramadol every 6 hours wasn't giving you enough medication. If you're taking the maximum of the Tramadol, normally you won't need any of the old medication.

When taking Tramadol, you can supplement it with Extra Strength Tylenol for additional pain management.

Thank you Jamie. .the Tramadol is giving me some nasty side effects..haven't taken one in almost 24 hrs and feel better already..took only tylenol today and now at bedtime a 5mg of Oxy..HIV doc is prescribing Vicoodin on Monday for those real painful nights and help with the withdrawl...I need some sleep! Thank goodness I'm tired..it was a LONG day and night..Groot is protesting quote a bit right now!

@Spencieca no sleep is just so tiring...pun intended lol.
Hoping that you get a reasonable sleep and that Groot behaves and doesn't act up like a pesky brat.
At 8 weeks I am still only sleeping in short 1-3 hour tranches. The 3 hour ones are rare.
What have you got planned for today? Maggie x

Oh my goodness..what a wonderful yet bit exhausting day! Started the evening with a sunset cruise on the bay with 10 of my most favorite people in the world...my very best friend flew out from Denver to surprise me..then went to dinner at one of my most favorite restaurants ever and the hubby and rented out a private room and 4 more of our dearest friends were there to join us! I just wished I would have been feeling better..I had no appetite at all and being on the boat made me a little naseous, which I usually doesn't happen to me..didn't drink any alcohol due to the pain meds and also my comprimised immune system...but I was up and about from 3pm until 1am..sitting at a 3 hour dinner with 14 people that are there to help you celebrate 25 years was pretty exhausting! Came home, got everyone to bed and took an Oxy 5mg....only pain pill besides Tylenol that I had in over 30 hours...figured I would zonk right out...NOPE! Was awake til 3:30 and then up at 6am..had to drive to a petsit at 730 so didn't take any type of pain meds..now Im home for the day and seriously dreading the night! I NEED to sleep! Groot is letting me know that he is very sore and tired and not shy about letting me know..I had some pain in the middle of the night that woke me up, haven't had that since 1st week of recovery...I know this is going to get better, it has to right!

I have been waiting to hear how the night went and for some reason I do not receive alerts....sorry you were not feeling better but it sounds like you still had a great time....must have been a little difficult on the boat. hope you get some rest and yes it does get better......much better

Vinny

Sounds like my night. Tried two percocets, good until 3:30am. And I am up again. Took two extra strength tylonal, but back up by 6:30. This is so frustrating.
