@gr82cu2 It hurts but it has been here for so long it doesn't register as bad as it is. I also have a bunch of herniated discs so I get referred pain. When I had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago I found I was full of endometriosis and didn't know it. Pain is interesting. I always say you can't feel pain in two places at the same time. Whn my pt bends my leg too hard, there is no place that hurts but there. LOL

@vallee they say in a year it will be just a memory as far as pain. I am in your boat it is a constant reminder not a memory. The only thing I am happy with is the scar which look good

@vallee, @gr82cu2 , @jerseygirl-in-ca - still marveling at what you're going thru and have been thru! Sounds so horrible to me. I'm seriously praying that your recovery (recoveries) go well. re: myself? Slept ok last night (not complaining ) unfortunately, I'm dealing w/diarrhea the past two days. I'm having a time trying to find just the right balance between pain meds and what I'm taking for constipation. Different for eveyone, I know. Although as I may have stated earlier, I'll take the "runs" over not going at all! That I cannot do again.

@Josephine - re:the article on swelling? It's spot on as usual!! The heck do we think is up with PT's and surgeons doing exactly what that article says, making you feel as though there's might be something wrong because you can't bend swollen knee? It's absolutely ridiculous and is really starting to annoy me! Infact, while I do like the outpatient PT I'm seeing now, it was mentioned to me yesterday that will just have to "work harder to get it to bend more". I thought, I couldn't possibly be working harder than I already am without being in severe pain. Again the PT is very nice but I did get a little snappy with her and say "have you ever had this done? "Of course she has not. And my reply through some tears was "you have no idea how excruciating this feels at times. Believe me when I say I'm doing the best I can right now with moving this". She backed off.

@bumknees09 I remember my shoulder DR for my rotator surgery having no sympathy for the year I lived with a broken rotator cuff before workmans comp authorized surgery. A month after my surgery he broke his. I nver missed a day of work and set my hair with a curling iron every day by propping it up the wall to hold the curling Iron while I turned with other hand. He took 6 weeks off before and after his surgery. He asked how I did it. I said I had n choice because even my DR didn't listen He said he would from then on. LOL

@bumknees09 Thanks I will get through this. I agree that constipation is miserable. Between that and when your bladder is full but you can barely make it there since you can barely move much less run or the bedpan in the hospital. Not sure which part of all this on that "that end" is worse. LOL I am sure we will laugh at some of this later, I just think for me it will be MUCH later.

@Shortie - can I ask... Why did you have to have surgery on it again? What was going on? Yikes! @jerseygirl in ca - your story sound so awful. How can so many things go wrong? And your DR sounds like a boob!!!

Here's a question for anyone and everyone-- how often do you exercise each day and what exactly do you do? Even today, my "bending" or trying to, is so stiff, it's driving me nuts!

@bumknees09, I can hear you knee saying

You are ONLY 28 days post op!

And, yes, with most surgeries, you'd be well on the way to "normal". But this surgery is extremely traumatic and takes much, much longer to recover from. Consider that you are only 28/365ths of the way through a recovery that takes a full year, at least, to complete.

As long as your knee is swollen, it is going to be stiff and it is going to hurt. Swelling is reduced by resting, elevating (toes above nose) and icing, icing, and icing some more, and taking those pain meds on a schedule. You may as well face the facts---stiffness to some degree is going to be with you for several months---it's the nature of the beast.

THE SECRET OF SUCCESS with joint replacements is TIME & PATIENCE. We have to have (or find) the PATIENCE to give our knees TIME to heal at their own pace. Nothing else works like these two things and nothing can take their place. But it is a very hard truth to absorb in the beginning of our recoveries.

Recovery is what it is, and it's going to take as long as it's going to take. So be PATIENT and let TIME take care of things with some assistance from you.
The knee is in charge---so take some deep breaths, relax, and learn to roll with the s l o w flow of recovery.

Take care and keep us posted. We care.

@bottomshollow - thank you and I agree with everything you said. It's not so much that I have a lack of patience per se, it's more than I'm not really sure if I'm doing enough to help it along or doing too little. Yesterday the PT said I should be doing my "exercises" six times a day! I thought Jesus, That seems like it would take up my whole day. That's why I'm really curious to see what anybody else on the site is doing for exercise. How many times today? And what exercises? I know we're all different and we all heal differently. But I don't seem to have an actual range of anything regarding the proper way to be doing some of this. Does that make sense?

@bumknees09, I can tell you that I did my exercises only when the in home PT came by twice a week for 6 weeks. Otherwise, I did heel slides off and on and just got on with living. Physical therapy is about moving---and with 2 cats and a semi-invalid hubby, I was doing a lot of moving. I was doing it slowly and resting, elevating, icing, and taking my pain meds. My ROM is around 125 flexion and 0 extension, and I can do all the things I want to do.

Here's a link to our Library article: Some suggestions for home physio (PT) and activity progress This may help you---I also think you'll find other info about doing your own PT in the knee section of the Library. Just spend some time browsing there.

@bumknees09 so sorry if my post was on your thread then disappeared it's now on my thread - this road is so bloomin long - I don't know what I'm doing more than normal - I blame the meds!!

I had a revision because I was in ALOT of pain and could only bend to 70-80 over a year post tkr although the symptoms started 6 months after - the bit between is a big of a long story!

Shortie x

I was lucky I had good insurance for my first knee and had minimal out of pocket. It's worse now, but probably better than it will be--every year we pay more premiums and OOP--so another reason I'm glad I got knee #2 done now.

how often do you exercise each day and what exactly do you do?
I'll tell you how much I did - NOTHING! Well, practically nothing. I did a few heel slides every once in a while (for few read about 5 every second or third day), and though I have an exercise bike right in front of me here in the lounge, I got on it about 5 times throughout my entire recovery. Since the seat is so uncomfortable, I did about 60-90 seconds and as soon as I got a full rotation I never used it again. I also did some little walks from week 4 but not every day. By little I mean about 15 feet week 5, about 150 feet week 6, and week 7 I did a 1 hour hike but only because I got lost in a part of the estate I was unfamiliar with! I never did the walks again after that. And that, people, about sums up how much exercising I did1

And did my ROM suffer for it? I'll leave you to judge

@bumknees09 What?? SIX times a day? No!!!! I think that is way too much at this stage unless they are having you do only one of each exercise each time. Here's what they are having me do, twice a day with 10 reps each time. I don't always do them twice a day. If my knee seems extra painful or swollen I only do them once and only once on PT days, like today :)

10 quad flexes, holding for 5 seconds each time
10 straight leg lifts while lying down and unaffected leg bent. Hold 5 seconds and lower slowly.
10 sitting knee extensions. Sit on edge of chair and bend operated knee to horizontal, hold 5 seconds, lower slowly.
10 sit to stand exercises without using hands or arms. Sit on edge of bed or I use arm on end of sofa. Stand, sit relax. Stand, sit, relax.
10 (not sure what to call it) I use a dog leash hooked under my foot and gradually pull my knee towards my chest until it stops. I pull far enough to feel the stretch but not pain and hold 5 seconds
10 straightening knee flexions. I stand at my walker (or a countertop would work) and hold on. With unaffected leg straight and weight on that leg I raise my operated leg heel from the knee only towards my butt.

That's it! I do this twice a day and then follow with my e-stim for swelling reduction and ice on top of that. I think that's more than enough for now. I've wondered too if I should be trying to do more or walk more but for now, I think there is still so much healing going on this is enough to keep the knee from freezing up.

@bumsknee09 I get exactly what you are saying about exercise. You do some ice and elevate and then time almost to start again. I often wonder am I doing enough but it is so swollen and just doesn't bend as I want. Do they really think we want this swollen stiff knee that doesn't let us get on with things? Even my hubby said today have you done those bends on the stairs - NO I flipping well haven't because it won't bend when not on the stairs. He is in my bad books - if it bent I would happily do it

@jerseygirl-in-ca I hope you are right about it being a memory. I really want my quad to work I am fed up using a belt to lift my leg up to elevate to get into bed, I honestly think it would just make everything easier. I cant really go down to 1 crutch outside as I will be unstable

Well it all goes to show ypou don't need to joint a military-style boot camp to get good ROM.
All you need is the mantra.

BTW, I edited your post as we have rules about bypassing profanities. See here - rule 5
