Seriously, once you get on a bowel regimen that works for you, you won't need to worry! Pain meds are so key to our recovery, even through the problems I had I kept on taking them. I was already "plugged up" so stopping my pain meds for one or two days wasn't going to change a thing. I'm so hoping you find something that helps you - recovery is hard enough without worrying about a non-knee issue! Take care...

When you get that constipated, then try using a fleets enema to get the blockage out of the way.. Then the same day take the Miralax and keep taking it everyday. Miralax won't hurt you, I used it and it works greats with no gas or cramping. But first you have to deal with the blockage.

@scaredinCA - thanks! I have used the enema. Trying milk of magnesia now instead of MiraLAX since I was doing MiraLAX for a week or so and it didn't seem to help at all. Although, I was not double dosing. Actually not sure which one would be better to use – MiraLAX or the milk of magnesia? I'll Give it a couple days and see how the mom works. Wish me luck. Got love being on this forum and discussing these subjects. Ha ha! Oh well, everyone has them, they just don't like to talk about it.

@bumknees09 i use magnesium citrate pills, about 4 at night before bed and a stool softener when I wake up. I have suffered from chronic constipation my whole life and after surgery it was terrible. You can get a jug of liquid mag from the pharmacy. Ask the pharmacist as it is behind the counter. They use before bowel medical procedures.

@jerseygirl-in-ca - yes, I've had to use the magnesium citrate a couple of times but did not know you could get it in pill form! That might be a good option. Thx!

Oh gosh! I have just read this whole thread - so interesting. Constipation= oh my word nothing prepared me for this. I could not have believed having a poo could be so painful. It truly was like giving birth out of your back passage. I took stool softeners and thankfully they worked. Now I have reduced my pain meds I am back to normal. But I was able to reduce pain meds as I was under strict instructions from nurse to not bend my knee as the wound didn't heal in some places. So couldn't do any exercises.

I am now back to exercising and fingers crossed I don't seem to have lost any ROM. Not that is was that fantastic anyway, about 90. But when I try to bend it, only goes so far. Not due to pain but swelling. So I feel that needs to go before my ROM improves. I am taking the scenic route! It's fine as long as I get there
Happy recovery everyone x

@vallee - no kidding right? I suppose if anybody told us exactly what was probably going to go on after surgery… No one would have it!! Ha! Practically every day something new goes on. Something that I don't want going on, or that I wasn't expecting to go on.

Re: ROM- if mine doesn't progress before Friday my OS is going to suggest MUA! I just don't think I can do it if he suggest it. Once again my theory, it's swollen so it cannot bend correctly and I'm not even one month out. Those are my thoughts and I'm sticking with them! I'm dead serious about the swelling theory. I keep saying to people, hold your index finger up picture it all swollen and now try to bend it. It's not happening! Is it? That's how my knee is responding now. That's just my opinion. As My dad used to say "that and $.10 will get your phone call" (you can tell that was a while ago ha!)

@bumknees09 just noticed we had surgery the same day so I think you are doing fine. everyday is different and such a rollercoaster you go up when you can complete something new and then go back down when someone says you should be doing more, heyho I am sure we will all feel very differently in say 4 weeks time
good luck with recovery x

@vallee Sept 2 I will be having the other done. I know all the things that are important for that one. Luckily I found this forum to help with all these concerns. Experiance on here and help is amazing and I am so grateful.

blimey @jerseygirl-in-ca that is quick after the first I will be getting my right one done after my holiday in November I haven't been given the date yet in some ways I think it is better to know what to expect and also it surely has to be easier with a good new knee to help

@vallee It is a financial thing and have to get done while I am still in this years insurance. My left knee was my bad or very bad knee but two years ago I was in an accident that destroyed my right knee which is the one I just had done. I lost my job, went through all my savings. The trying to get around on my now deformed and smashed right knee made me crippled on the left leg. It will not make it longer. Besides, I can't still get a good nights sleep, so might as well have more of a reason than I do. LOL

@jerseygirl-in-ca There are a few of us here in the same boat trying to get both done on this year's insurance to save on out of pocket expense. My OS won't do them closer than 90 days apart so I'm hoping to have my right knee done around the 1st of November if he agrees my progress with the left will be in condition to allow it by then. I think it will be. I'm now 2 weeks today post op on the left and other than being very stiff it's coming along pretty well.

My lord - so many of you are going thru or have been through so much worse than me, I'm embarrassed about all my whining. Sooooo sorry. For me (and it's not as though I've never dealt w/pain) but to me, this level for this length of time already has been very daunting and difficult for me. some of you are going to do it again? Wow! One of my brothers had both done at the same time -eeeekkkk! My right knee is in semi rough shape but after the way this TKR is going on my left leg, I'll have to be practically crawling before I had the right one done! God Bless you !

@bumknees09 Don't be sorry! Your surgery and recovery is just as valid as anyone else's. It's just some of us have 2 bad knees and some don't. Because I trust my surgeon and have gone to him for 10+ years I wasn't willing to look for someone to do both at the same time and honestly I don't know how people do that anyway. I do understand the desire for only one recovery though. I have 2 bad knees and had to pick which one to go first. My left was locking on me many times a day and causing me to trip when walking so I decided on it first. The right one hasn't been doing that, yet, LOL!! I could possibly get along maybe a few more years on the right one but right now I have good insurance, it will save over $6,000 in out of pocket expense to do it this year and honestly, I'm just over my knees ruling my life. You never know from one day to the next if it will be a good day or a bad day. I love to travel and these knees are taking a lot of the fun out of that so out with the old and in with the new!!! :good-bad:

@gr82cu2 Mine is ok with it or was , but am worried about him seeing how little this current leg bends. I am at 5 weeks today. I worked out the biggest issue where I couldn't straighten it. That was plus 20 this is at 90 but am doing better now that I added pool. My insurance starts again 10/1. It was the one that idn't get operated on that was my worst before an accident hurt me. Thae last MRI I had on it was 2008 and it was bone on bone, huge cysts and osteophytes. It has gotten worse from there. Getting it xrayed thursday. I need to get a job. I lost mine two years ago. Can't fo that till legs work and the weight I gained is down. gads as you can see it will not be as a secretary I will be job hunting for.

@bumknees09
what people complain about is what is bad to them at the moment. This week it is my pt and needing to be well to get other leg fixed. Yours is something else. There is no easy anything about knee surgery. It is painful and hard work. Trust me I whine around here to my husband like you would not believe. I even moan in my sleep or the rare occasion I can sleep. You never need to think your issue is less that someone elses. I can barely use the other leg so have no option. No choice for me. I would have had both at the same time but due to many other medical issues am high risk so id one at a time.

@jerseygirl-in-ca wow you have had a rough road in the last few years. this will be a new beginning for you, eventually after recovery you will be pain free and able to look for a job if you want
I just want to be pain free I can't remember what they feels like

@jerseygirl-in-ca You must be in excruciating pain with all that is going on in your knee. I wish you all the best with your 1st knee continuing with recovery and your 2nd ultimately giving you relief from the pain. I see so many here use pools for therapy. We don't have anything like that around here that I'm aware of but I think I'll ask my PT to be sure. It sounds like a great way to get some stress free therapy.
