Revision TKR possibly allergic reaction to knee replacement

So I have a question, my os said about me going to in patient rehab and since I currently can barely walk, fall alot, and have been walking with an extreme limp since 2006,pretty much,I think it would b best. When the lady from the hospital talked to me,takes care of the knee replacement patients she said that usually they don't send people who r young to inpatient rehab but then I told her my situation and that I will b alone all day from 7 am to almost 9 pm,sometimes longer she said she will encourage inpatient rehab in her notes. So my question for ya is in the end, when the decision has to b made does it get left with my os to make the decision or the lady I talked to on the phone or the physical therapist

It may depend on how your hospital is set up. I had bilateral total knee replacements last July and I am also relatively young. In my case the hospitalist was the person that was responsible for getting me to skilled nursing for a few days. I think your OS probably could as well.

Thanks. I m just so worried to b home by myself, cause I def. Don't want to fall afterwards

First of all it will be your decision after your surgery. Then depending upon what you can and cannot do the physical therapist will fill out a report with their suggestions. Then with that info the surgeon will voice their opinion. I don't think you'll have any problems based on your history.

I don't know who on the staff will make the decision, but ultimately, it's your decision. My suggestion is, if it may be a possibility to need to go to one, that you thoroughly check out the facility or facilities available. Some people here have gone to good ones; mine was horrendous and I left before they wanted me to. Check out the cleanliness, nurse to patient ratio, the food service, patients per room, etc. Mine had so few staff to patients that it took at least an hour and a half to get my pain meds after I asked for them, which is inexcusable. My then OS's PA's recommended I go there as my pain wasn't under control and they thought that was a better option for me. My current OS doesn't like them and won't even suggest I go there. The food was beyond horrible and you had no choice of what you wanted to eat. I was there from Friday to Monday and never ate a single thing from them. I never saw a PT, which is part of the reason they had me go there. I wasn't expecting to go to one, so didn't check them out at all. Unless you have a really great facility that is an actual physical rehab place, I'd suggest avoiding them. If you go to a facility where they generally take care of people with dementia, etc, you most likely will hate it. They're not really set up to take care of TKR patients. Just check them out thoroughly. Go look at them, read online reviews, etc. Can you find someone to pop in and help if you need it? Or can you call friends, etc?

Thank u. Honestly, all the friends that I have r working or are too busy so no one friend wise. I m adopted and my adopted family can't stand me and won't do anything to help. So all I have is my hubby who will b working and my two dogs who definitely won't b helping, lol.

Maybe your friends can at least give you a call during the day and possibly come by after work to drop something off. I'm in the eastern part of PA. If you are in my end of PA private message me and is be glad to help if I can.

That's a shame. I guess your hubby can't take time off, or work less hours for a short time, or you can't hire someone to come in a couple of hours a day? So sorry. Maybe your insurance would help there-instead of paying for inpatient, maybe they'll cover a little at home help instead? It's likely less expensive for them than full time inpatient rehab......Or, maybe if you plan really well, using the advice on this site, you can be so prepared you could manage on your own during the day? I know Josephine did it on her own, maybe you could read her threads and advice to see how she did it.

Newlybionic I just sent u a private message

Lovetocookandsew, sadly no my hubby can't take off. I think my ins. Does pay for in home care. I will have to read Josephine 's thread and see what all she did. Rite now I m so bad that I can't even cook a meal ,can't stand. I guess in the end it will work out just too much time to think of everything

I got your message. I can help.

Is your problem mainly in the knee you are having the revision on? You might be surprised by how you do post op. No decision has to be made until then. If your husband can just set you up with a cooler with some snacks, drinks and ice packs that may turn out to be enough. The first week I had someone from the home care agency come every day so I had someone there during the day too. They just did gentle stretches and massage during that week but it was nice to have someone visit in the middle of the day.

Yes it is mainly my knee. It all depends on how things go. Thanks. I will keep u posted and we will just see how things turn out. I have a feeling, pretty sure that my ligaments r torn up too but I know this os is really good and will fix me up

It's good to have an OS who is used to handling problems. The OS who did my revision was excellent. I couldn't be happier. The original OS made a mess of my knee but he took care of it. It was painful the first week but the pain diminished fairly quickly after that Ashe told me it would do.

Yea my original os really was very uncaring and even my new os said that he would never leave someone in the situation I m in . I have the nickel rash and it is spreading faster now and he said he isn't sure just what he is going to find, what it is going to really look like since it look pretty bad on the outside but in the end he says I will see a huge difference

You will feel better having that metal out of your knee, and something in its place that does not evoke an allergy response.
The OS should be able to order home health to come in a check on you.

My husband was working too so I understand what you are talking about. I know that when the hospitalist came to talk to me about going to skilled nursing, he told me that they had checked and my insurance would pay for part but not all of that and so he wasn't sure if that is what I wanted to do and they were concerned about the added cost. Nice to know that someone is thinking about that and we were glad to pay the out of pocket to get me a little further along before I was at home. I do not know if a rehabilitation is one in the same as skilled nursing so I don't know how that affects what your insurance would pay for.

I agree with lovetocookandsew about checking out the facilities before you go to one. Luckily, my experience was not like lovetocookandsew. My surgery was done at a hospital in a small town near where I live and the skilled nursing facility was part of that hospital. My nurses were wonderful. There was only two of us that were in skilled nursing at the time and we've become good friends. The nurses would make us ice cream sodas and such. We had PT twice a day. It was clean and friendly. I really wanted to get home but these people really tried to be good to us.

Cowgal thank u. My surgeon says he waits to see how u feel after the surgery bfore planning the rehab so who knows mayb I will b good to go home, just alot to think about. My ins. Will cover it 100 percent, I checked on it already. I have 2 puppies at home, one is part jack Russell (they r jumper dogs, love to jump)so I m concerned about that too but I have been working with him to get him consistent on not jumping on anyone to great them. Thanks u all for talking to me,it makes me feel so much better already
