Allycat, I can tell you from experience that your hip will be fine---it's the rest of you that will be hurting.

[Bonesmart.org] op/post op since 13 march
Of course, a fall could increase the possibility of dislocation, particularly early after surgery. I can only tell you that I fell flat on my face April 1, a hard fall on my living room floor, neither my hip (28 months post op) nor both my knees (18 months post op) suffered at all---my rib cage all the way around was extremely sore and still is in a few places--and I bent my right hand thumb joint in the opposite direction from what God intended---and it is still swollen and sore and will be for another month or two I'm sure. And the kind of fall you have will make a difference and the distance you fall.

And I agree that falling is scarey, but not necessarily deadly. So I do recommend that we all be careful and look where we're walking and at what can trip us up.

clifford149 glad to hear no bruises! I bet a few tinned plums made everything allll betterer! :)
ByGosh "to fruition" har har harharharhar:rotfl: I am using a different computer here, and may be able to post pics from it. OR... it may turn out not to have any photo editing software on it. Let's take it to the Social Room, ok? :)
Allycat love the avatar!!!

zauberflöte Ok, social room it is. Start posting your mystery pics! You're the one here with the imagination.

clifford149 Glad you feel onto something sort of soft and didn't do any damage. I toppled forward while getting up from the couch at 1 1/2 weeks post-op and was scared to death I did damage, but the hip was perfectly fine. One of my toes may have sustained some damage, as a week later, I noticed it was red and swollen, but felt nothing at the time. Mystery to me....

Dear hippies ...my 8 week report...

1. During the past week been easing the 90 degree rule I can nearly put on my socks and shoes normally...still some tightness in the groin area I am assuming its not a ROM limiting factor
2. My life is becoming far more normal I am feeling less like a hippie
3.I am walking fairly well but have not done any long walks
4. My gym visits are nearly at my past routines
5. Knee pain less apparent....so all in all a good recovery
Now for the plums all to be revealed zauberflöte Allycat

clifford149 Another great report regarding your recovery.Have you given up the walking stick and how far are you walking now ? Sounds like you had no problems following your fall and its something that will happen to most of us at some time. I would like to go back to cycling sometime but worry about falling off. It's great that your knee pain is less apparent and your life is more normal.Well done you !

Hi Kim22 thanks for your encouragement......I can walk the length of a supermarket unaided....as I may have mentioned I have weak other leg so not a keen walker......I cycle in the gym and usually do 15 minutes....but not getting on my own bike for awhile.....

Hi sir Alex ferguson of man united football club is due a hip operation !

clifford149 Yes I heard it on the news there is some suggestion that he may retire as well. Do you plan to get back to normal cycling in the future ? I planned to try a short walk without my stick today as last week I tried and was not ready but I over did the walking on Sunday and Monday and twisted my groin awkwardly as well on Monday so will leave it bita it longer I think I got carried away with all the lovely weather!

Hi Kim22 sounds like u have been suffering recently ....yes will take up cycling...will start on flat areas and practice stopping and starting but will leave until at least week 10......

Just heard on our news in Oz of Alex Ferguson's retirement announcement.
I think I'll take an example from your experience clifford149 and take it slowly moving from a cane. I'm a bit timid about doing some injury.
Sounds like you are making great progress!

Hi Maeve being timid is a good idea....there's absolutely no rush.....of course some of our hippie friends have complex lives so can be under pressure to move more quickly !

Your're so right about that@clifford149!
There is a really nice man at my day rehab who had a TKR and has been working so hard and keeping such a positive attitude. This week he hit a wall. He is very worried about returning to work at the end of the month...he is not up to it?
He has such a long trip to get to rehab by public transport. His wife cannot bring him as she needs to work. Such financial pressure is truly awful.
I feel so lucky, retired mainly, live close by the rehab, supportive husband who can drive me etc etc.
This is very hard for some.

clifford149 What a wonderful report, good for you Cliff. Tomorrow I will be at the 4 week mark and I am feeling like a million bucks really. I am down to 2 pain pills a day from 6 by weeks end I will just take one at night. I go the 22nd for 6 week check-up with the OS. I have caught myself breaking the 90 degree rule at times, I had asked my PT about it and she told me that my hips is very strong and more than likely my body knows what it can do. She said, I would have to do something like cross my legs mid point to even possibily dislocate my hip. My scar looks like a pencil line OS did a wonderful job. Cliff keep us informed on your progress as you start to leave hippyhood :rotfl: :rotfl: I didn't try tin plums but I didn't need to the juice worked just fine on me and now that the meds are at minimum I'll pretty regular...lol (as she says proudly) ~Take care

Well done Liveringer You are doing very well for only 4 weeks especially when you are now only taking 2 pain pills a day. Do you still have a cane and which exercises are you doing?

Kim22 I do have a cane and only carry the darn thing (I do use it on unlevel ground). Let see my home exercises standing I march bringing them up as far as I can, stretch my leg behind me, stretch the leg side ways, heel/toe 20 reps of each. Lying on my bed large coffee can with a towel around it placing it under the knee and do leg raises, good knee bent while operated leg about half that bend hold that position and lift as far as I can and controled lower it back to place, knee slide 20 reps of those too. Now at PT therapist does a few leg stretches while I am lying on the bed/table, springboard contraption, step and lower to heel tap, leg curl machine (curling under, lift leg up), bike and walking laps. (about 45 mins)

I barely have a limp each day it gets better (before operation I was dragging the leg and lifting my hip to walk). I am hoping to drive a short distance by the end of the week. I'll post on my thread at weeks end to tell how that goes. I do feel great though and very pleased on how I have progressed.

Liveringer Hi Karen you are doing a lot more than me I am just doing the first 3 of yours 10 reps x3 per day + a few step ups Its strange how there is so much variation in the PT advice we all get Your exercise regime is working well for you which is great Please keep me informed

Great job on your recovery progress! So glad your fall didn't do anything - just a reminder to be more careful. I'm still scared to go into the gym just yet. Kudos to you for getting your normal routine back! I haven't even tried putting on socks & shoes. I'm too scared I'll dislocate. I'm waiting on the 12 wk mark when I see my OS. He told me pre-op that putting on socks & shoes and cutting my toenails were going to be the most difficult to do. I'm not sure if it's due to the type of implant and the ROM the implant allows or if its a matter of stretching the muscles, ligaments, & tendons to get back to normal ROM. Right now, I have DH put my sock on me before he leaves for work and my shoes are slip ons. And summer is just around the corner so no need for socks then!

Ok, regarding your plums. I admit they kind of look tasty but I am hungry as it is time for lunch here. They would look better with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream! Are they pitted? Do they still have the skins on or are they sans skins? That juice looks syrupy sweet. I looked for tinned plums at my last grocery run and my store didn't have them! And no, they were not sold out; there was no place on the shelves for tinned plums so I know they don't carry them!
