Hi Patricia, good for you, what a wonderful day you've had. So glad you are seeing the light. It's great isn't it! Keep smiling:)

The only way we can go is forward!

Well thanks for the articles shelly. I now know I have an upright bike not a recumbent ( I have to confess I didnt know the difference ) so I will start off tomorrow with five minutes and see how i go. With not seeing the physio very often at least I feel I am doing something.

:chrisglitter: :merrychr: :merrychr: :chrisglitter: :chrisglitter: Woooooow guess who found the christmas smilies. I LOVE THEM :bells:

I use a bike and it really does loosen the knee. Also my PT said to start with the resistance at zero. later you can increase it. She said that biking is the best single exercise you can do and I'm guessing that includes into the future. I love biking. We have bike toured in France and my goal, probably for 2014 is more bike touring in Europe, probably Holland just to keep it easy. So get on that bike, girlfriend, and you can join us! :bicycle1:

Hey, I just noticed those Christmas smilies when I did that last post. :giftsa: :reindeers: :xmaswindow: :xmasdance:

Patricia I agree with all the advice about the bike. Make sure your knee isn't going to hit the frame if you did do a full revolution. Start with the rocking but quickly you will be able to do revolutions BACKWARDS. After you have mastered backwards then you can go the other way. I started with it just a few days after I got home, maybe a week, but just the rocking. No tension yet for me but I am sure I could now. My PT prefers the treadmill for me and not the bike but I don't know why. Good for you with the groceries. I admire you greatly about the ironing. One time I ironed 23 of my husband's shirts. That was when I was married and NOT working! He had alot of shirts.

Randi, Your bike trip to Holland sounds like a wonderful idea! And it would be flat and easier than hilly ones. I would add that pool work whether swimming, water walking or water aerobics is another wonderful way to exercise new (or old) knees.

Well been a funny couple of days. Doing a lot and thinking Im getting there to a lot of swelling and my little ol knee saying "Hold on a bit and slow down". Went to late night shopping at a huge precint near us. Lots of floors so lots of walking. So took the wheelchair. Which was awful. Just felt so vulnreable. Hated it. So ended up pushing it aound with all the shopping bags on it. So today lots of swelling and icing then went to my grand daughters 4th birthday party. Lot of standing again. so knee even more swollen and lots of comments like O its ten weeks now thought you would be running around and here you are with a cane still. This is getting very boring all these comments. Maybe I should just stay in until I am running around as they say and make people happy. No not happy at the moment feeling weepy, depressed and fed up with the whole thing.

Patricia, I am sorry you had a bad day. From what I remember it seems like you have been doing an awful lot in the last two weeks, so maybe you need a day or so of R&R. I know that is hard at this time of year. People say lots of stuff, and they usually don't know what they are talking about. Everybody seems to know someone who had a picture perfect kenee replacement, but I think the reality is that people often say they are doing fine, even if they are not. I know I do when someone notices me still limping. It is hard but you just have to close your ears and not listen. So have a nice rest with an ice pack and watch something frivolous on TV and get a good night sleep. :kittykiss:

O Thank you lisa. And thats how bad I am cos it made me cry someone being so nice to me. So im taking your advice. Going to bed, icing and taking it easy tomorrow. Thank you for being you and always being so nice. Take Care.:beg:

Big hug Patricia! If you have a dog or cat snuggle up with them, it always helps and having a good cry does too. Sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite! My mother always said that to me. :xmaswindow: :xmaskitty:

[Bonesmart.org] Onwards and upwards - my journey continues Yes, Patricia, the reason you come to BoneSmart is because we get it! We understand why you still use your cane at 10 weeks post op. We understand about the swelling, the aching, the sleeplessness, the lack of energy, the ups and downs. Those who have not had a TKR don't have a clue and probably don't really care. And after a while friends and family member's eyes seem to glaze over when we try to talk about what's going on with us.

We all get very frustrated by the slowness of recovery. But it's the reality we have to deal with. So we do it together here on the forum, and it makes life a little better. We share our common experiences and know that we are not alone and that there are others who are in true sympathy with us.

Hang in there, Patricia and know that it will get BETTER and BETTER. But it does unfortunately take a lot of TIME and PATIENCE. [Bonesmart.org] Onwards and upwards - my journey continues

Hi Patricia. I think the worst pressure I feel comes from inside me, I think people are looking at me and judging, I think I should be further along, I want to do more than I really should, you know what I mean? For the most part, other people are just trying to be cheerful or they just don't know, and at the end of the day, they probably don't think about it again. Meanwhile, we still have a sore knee and a long recovery. We still have to pace ourselves, we still have to rest and we still have to take care of ourselves. So hang in there, rest, you'll feel better tomorrow. You are doing great in your recovery and that's when it gets hard to stay down.
Personally, I think those with recent TKR's need to really think about keeping the holidays as low key as possible, or a lot of heads will roll and tears will be shed!

Oh, and I forgot to say that I care about you but I bet you already know that! :friends:

Hi Patricia, rest sounds like a great idea. I am coming onto 11 weeks on Monday and I've had a BIG swelling day today and pacing ourselves IS a hard thing this time of year. Actually, I find when I have a busier day than usual, the next day is a much slower paced day. It took me ALL day to wrap a few gifts! I know there's so many things I would love to do, so many. I am not as courages as you and tend to go at a lot slower pace. Randi is right, people don't know what a TKR is all about. I have had people say the same thing, just this week, invitations for Christmas gatherings, I turned them all down. I can't make all those visits and I'm hoping everyone understands. I need to be strong for a couple of days at Christmas for my Father, we are spending a couple of days with him. Pace yourself my dear and remember the #1 priority is your knee...Keep smiling and healing:) and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

This recovery is slower than we would like it to be and more frustrating than it ought to be---but when we consider what was surgically done to the knee---the cutting, the sawing, the pounding, the gluing, etc---it all does finally make sense.

Recovery is like a roller coaster ride and you will have some good days and, for no apparent reason, some real stinkers, too.

Do not let those other people get you down---they have not been where you are and do not understand how tough it is to go through recovery! We do, and we will be here for you!

Just take it one day at a time, and do not worry about---you will reach your destination! My own recovery from a BTKR took five months to lose a pesky limp and it was not until about eight months when I was feeling "pretty good"!

I, too, was fed up many times during my recovery, and I kept asking my PT's "WHEN"? They would simply smile and say, "You will get there, but your knees are in charge." You will reach your destination and you will be fully recovered----and you will feel great! Down the road, these frustrating times wil melt away or become memories of your struggles in your victory!

Patricia I don't think you realize how much you've been doing! You are doing normal things and yet it was just 8 little weeks ago your leg was sawed hammered tapped and literally pulled apart like a turkey leg. I am so sorry you are going through this. Honestly I think you need to let yourself have a break. I had my little incident with the B/P and cortisone shot so HAD to take it easy and guess what I shopped my last 3 gifts on line today and can't believe so much stuff is on sale and free shipping! I decided I'm not decorating very much. My tiny tree will have to do, possible without lights or balls at this point. ha! I wish you could let yourself rest too. You have more pressure on you it seems than some of us. You are amazing and so full of vim and vigor I envy you! But your poor body is just not completely ready yet! Remember all the people who told us it would be better at a certain month? We aren't actually there yet, not full throttle. It's in our hearts, but we just can't do it all when we've been through this operation. Love and hugs to you! You are awesome!
Brig I know what you mean...doing just a few things is exhausting still.:sleigh: And some of the christmas stuff is right in there with all the smilies but towards the end of them...just keep scrolling.

THANK YOU all for your kind posts. Sometimes it all gets too much dosent it. And even tho you explain to people about the op and recovery time its those same people who make the silly remarks :headbang: Im listening to everyones advice and realising maybe I have done too much over the last week or so. And if I do go out again and meet up with them I will wear ear muffs so I dont have to listen and just smile sweetly and say "Happy Christmas". My daughter is home from University for a month now and saw how fed up I was yesterday so she is taking over things at home for a while and I am going to rest, ice and elevate so Im feeling better for the festive days. THANK YOU again. Im sure if I hadnt found this forum and all you lovely people I would be on anti depressants by now. :santa-wave:
