Ada, the simple fact is that you are doing far too much at this early stage. Hips really don't need that much PT, they get better pretty much all on their own. All they need is a gentle short walk 2-3 times a day and plenty of rest! You seem to be going short on rest. You must remember that you have had major, major surgery and it's not going to get better in two weeks.

Read the articles Jamie posted for you, specially the ones about energy drain and pain management. If you can't get Tylenol then take the Tramadol but 100mg 4hrly 5 times a day to a maximum of 600mgs per 24hrs. This will only be for another 2-3 weeks at most - provided you cut back on all that frenetic activity! - and then things will start to subside.

Shame about the Tylenol - I cannot for the life of me conceive why the FDA are so paranoid about this excellent drug. I'm just about to go collect a repeat prescription from my doctor for it and he issues me with 200 tablets at a time!

Josephine,

If I would have known it was going to be pulled I would have stocked up too. They also pulled Exedrine, which is the only thing that helps when I get a head ache. So frustrating when you go to the store and can't find either Tylenol or Exedrine. I don't get it, they stated that both manufactures were full of fungus and mold. Basically saying they were dirty and had to clean up the plants.. but it doesn't make sense since so many people have been taking both for many years with no complications. Now there's commercials on tv "If you or a loved one suffered bla bla bla, after taking Tylenol products you may be entitled to compensation... contact such and such Law firm" So tired of seeing such commercials!

Well,

It's 12:42AM here in Sarasota, FL.... and yes, I am awake. I swear, I can only sleep 1.5-2.0 hours at the max. Have made some tea and am watching the re-run of the finale of Season Five of Mad Men. Hope my neighbors can't hear the tv; our bedrooms are backed up directly against each other.

I feel pain and stiffness, but had taken two Tramadol at 11pm; had previously taken two at 7pm and did okay from 7-11. But, the attempt to sleep didn't last four hours.

Anyone else up? :)

I wasn't aware of a pull of Excedrin, but if it was a manufacturing problem it will likely be back.

The Tylenol things is totally different. The company will no longer be supplying the 500mg Extra Strength Tylenol. But, the 325mg will still be available, as will the 625mg that is supposed to be for arthritis. You can take 3 of the regular Tylenol (975mg) instead of the old 1000mg and you should be okay. Or you can take 1 of the 625mg and 1 of the 325mg as a dose for 950mg. That also may work just fine. It's all about tallying up the total mg in a 24 hour period. So it can still be done.

It makes me really angry also. It's like we aren't smart enough to follow instructions!

Why the shaking of the head, Josephine? Because of the Tylenol situation? I did have a neighbor walk over to the Publix (our local store) to see if they had any Tylenol, and they didn't have any! They did have a "Publix Brand" which is an equivalent supposedly.

Just posted my photo of my war wound in the other thread. Boy, does it feel good to have the staples out!

Okay. Again, yesterday the staples were removed. I feel great today, as if I don't need meds at all. I have the generic Tylenol on hand (500mg); should I stop taking the Percoset and Tramadol completely and just switch to the 1000mg of generic Tylenol?

Thanks!

Well, just don't throw the real drugs out quite yet. You can try just 1000mg of Tylenol 4x a day. If it works for you, great! If not, you can always go back to the other meds---maybe not as much as often as before. Never hurts to try! (of course, it may turn out that it does hurt---but you can deal with that).

Take care, keep us posted, we care.

It may be just a bit too soon to make the switch to over the counter meds. Of course you can give it a try if you like, but please don't allow yourself to be in pain. There is nothing wrong with taking the prescription pain medications when you are in pain. This is major surgery and your body needs the peace of "no pain" in order to properly heal.

Adafloridq,

Tylenol is the brand name of acetaminophen. Remember to include the Tylenol (acetaminophen) that is contained in the Percocet (combo of oxycodone and acetaminophen) when calculating how much Tylenol you can take daily. For example, my prescription Percocet each contained 325 mg of acetaminophen. Should not exceed 4000 mg.

Last in-home PT session today! PT Supervisor will come out tomorrow afternoon to evaluate and communicate that evaluation to my OS who I see this Thursday AM. Sleeping is getting better, gait/limp is much better, and I can't believe I am saying this, but it feels GREAT to exercise (it's been two years!). I've been walking my dog alone since last Friday.

Am hoping I get the all clear from OS and would like to get back to grooming a couple of dogs a day; although I have enjoyed getting things done around the house that have been "waiting" for some long awaited personal attention from me. Not to mention catching up on naps, reading, and am currently hooked on Sherlock, the PBS Series recently released - Fantastic!

I am thinking the OS will still order PT outside out of the home which is fine by me. I feel like my spirits are uplifted and that I'm accomplishing something during this time!

Hugs to all of you!

Gosh, Ada, are you sure you just had surgery May 29? You are just coming along like gangbusters.:spin: Just don't get carried away and do too much. Ain't life grand after THR? I sure thought so---I never even think about my hip now, and it caused me misery for 10 years. Take care and keep us posted. We care.

Welcome to the site. I also had trouble with something I had in surgrey but with it passes in time thats the good news. I got loads of hives and purple welts. But just thing both of us are now over it and we are now working on getting well. It does take time and do it slow. The first time I did too much and paid for it dealy so take care. Remember we are open 24 hours a day. :puppysmooze:Tashia

Thanks for all your thoughts on my site. I figured it was about time I read your story. Quite the journey, holy moly girl you sound like you are doing great now despite a few bumps in the road early on. Be careful though, you see from others  how easy it is to do too much. ...and animals can be unpredictable so you don't want to go into things if you don't feel really stable.

Wishing you luck with keeping your balance on the recovery beam :) , Cathy

Well, my OS appointment was today at 9am. He couldn't have been more pleased, and of course I started bawling (when oh when does this emotional stuff stop?). He said he was surprised I had made it as long as I had, as the condition of my hip was SO bad (his words).

I had questions about PT; he said he didn't feel I needed further PT outside of the home (six sessions). But, he said keep walking! He said the hip needs to walk! We have a fantastic bridge here (where I first felt my hip pain two years ago) called the Ringling Bridge; it is exactly one mile. I used to walk it every morning four times (four miles) under an hour. It has a great incline/decline in its design, and my goodness, my legs were in great shape and my head was so clear! So, he said get out to that bridge again, but go slower! :)

I am going to work tomorrow; I own a dog grooming shop, and if I don't work, I'm not making any money. I will be grooming two dogs a day for the first two weeks and see how that goes.

My OS also suggested baby aspirin for the next 30 days. I asked about glucosamine and chongrointin (sp) etc as preventative measures. He said it's okay, but there isn't anything really proven that it helps. He did encourage me to add Vitamin D into my daily regimine.

Unfortunately, the left side has DJD, as well. It's just in my genes, he said. So, I too am focused on getting some weight off (20 lbs) to assist the health of my joints. I'm 5"9 and weigh 170; he said optimally, I should be at 145, but I'll see how this goes.

Sleeping at night is still an issue, but it is getting better.

Oh, he did suggest massaging olive oil into the incision area, as it feels "hard"; can't remember if he said that is scar tissue forming?

The bills are coming in through my BCBS online account; one surgeon turned out to not be a particpant in BCBS which I had no idea... so, here's the first "fight." And, the Dr at the rehab place where I was for less than an hour submitted a bill to BCBS for $350! Fight #2. The administrative stuff will be exhausting I believe. :)

Okay, going to try to fall asleep while watching Mad Men reruns....

Thanks everyone. I am so grateful to have found this site.... it has been so helpful, and I have not felt alone (again wish I had found it before the surgery!).

Bravo to you for taking on the insurance fight. Stay with it. Reason can prevail!!!

It is normal for your incision to be a little hard as it heals. Oil or not, it will eventually flatten out and be just fine. Many people like to do the massage as it feels good. So go for it if you want to. But....if you don't it will heal just as well.

Great update re your OS visit.. what a nice surgeon he sounds like.. so sensible to say just keep walking.. this is what my OS said also.. 'hips were designed in the body for walking'.. must admit work gets in the way of doing more.. but at least we have long corridors...

I have found pure coconut oil is fantastic and massage it in every day, trouble is at 7 months post op (with a posterior incision) it is such a fine incision line, I can't always feel the actual cut...

great you are enjoying the forum :)

Good report from doc and don't worry, the emotions will balance out. Just think how much you have been through emotionally. Whether we consciously feel it all or not, there is the pain before, the dwindling of our active lives, the "decision", the fear around that and what it will do or won't do for us, the surgery, the first week (which I feel is in a class of its own haha), the recovery, so so so much to go through and through it all you had to keep it together. One of my favorite quotes "TEARS ARE THE SAFETY VALVE OF THE HEART", nice huh? You are just letting a little off the top my dear.

Too funny, I did some of the Mad Men reruns too. Love that show. If you ever need some inspiration on just about any topic, google Ted Talks. Very cool 20 min talks on just about Anything.

An herbalist friend of mine has me rubbin palm tree oil salve on my scar. I think anything you rub helps with the scar tissue. As far as the scar itself, it will disappear little by little no matter what you do.

Take it easy at work. Move slowly and deliberately. Though you are feeling so good you are still early on. Let us know how it goes

SMJA: Yes, my OS is FANTASTIC. I'm so glad you heard what he said, as well "the hip is meant for walking." I'll have to look for cocoanut oil this weekend.

Cathy, how cool that we enjoy Mad Men; have you gotten into the new Sherlock Holmes (PBS) with Benedict Cumberbatch? Absolutely FABOO! I will check out the Ted Talks... you have the BEST suggestions! I'll check out Palm Tree oil, as well. Sheesh, I'm surrounded by Palms down here in Sarasota!

My first day back went well! I had "Ike" a 105lb retriever that I had to shave down. I got our maintenance man to lift him to my table for me. And, then I had "Misha" a tiny little "mixture" that I rescued last August and a client of mine decided to adopt her around last Thanksgiving. It felt so good to be interacting with customers, much less the dogs, answering the phone, and I felt good! I got to go to the bank and deposit money - HURRAH! :)

Then, I ran a few errands and was walking over to the Publix (local grocery store right next to my bldg) and passed the Manicure place. I thought: Boy, a pedicure would feel good... my feet in warm water, someone scrubbing my feet and rubbing salty stuff onto my calves (especially operative leg).... I haven't had a pedicure in years.... it really felt like a BIG treat.

I have three small dogs tomorrow, and hope to get back home to test my skill/operative leg in the pool.

EVERYONE: have a lovely weekend. Has anyone heard from Dorothy yet today?
