Cathy,

I forget how long you were going for...

Are you back yet?

Hope you had fun and your new hip made it a nice return.

Hi Cathy

Just catching up with you to see how you are progressing?

Missing you!

Hello everybody. Had a busy wk after my wk home to Wisconsin, then went back to New York for a friends wedding. I must say I was SO PLEASED :yay: with how my body cooperated. There were days that I felt like "wow, feels like I am turning a corner". Still using my cane but lightly most of the time. At times i am sure it looked like i did not even need it, but i do. Hip just not strong enough all the way and leg lenth thing, though coming along with that too. Towards the end of the week things started to go downhill, but, though walking a lot, I did not do my stretches as I should have and I think different cars, beds, traveling, all caught up with me. Had a couple day setback when i got home but then back to where I was. ...and, of course, had a great time seeing family. It filled me up in a way I really needed.

This week I am going to try riding my bike. Been trying the stationary one but want to get out on the bike path and take in the views. For those who don't know, Burlington Vermont is on Lake champlain, which is the 6th largest fresh water lake in the U.S. and on the other side of the lake are the beautiful Adirondack mountains. The views are truly spectacular. ( Z you already know this)

So, all in all, when I can stay in the moment of a bad day :) *I am doing well. I sometimes worry about how fragile it seems I've gotten, and that I can be sooo set back by something I would not have been set back by before. Hopefully I will hear from my bonesmart friends that this is also something that gets better as I get stronger. I think I know that in m head, then when it happens, fear sets in and messes with me :rolleyespink:

It will take me a few days to catch up on all of you, but I will. Hope you are all doing well. End of this week a friend from California is visiting. ...and the summer of visits begin, hooray for me.
*Cathy

Hi Cathy,

Well, I'd say for being 3 months out you are doing splendidly!!! Nice that all the travel excursions went so well and that you were smart to stay on the cane even if it might have looked like you didn't need it!! :thumb:

Your confidence level will increase as time goes on and you test your hip with different activities and survive. I think the fragile feeling is pretty normal because you are so close out from the surgical experience that you can still remember it both mentally and physically. You are still healing though so when you get any waves of fatigue it's good to just take a break and rest up for a day or two.

Have an awesome bike ride & fun with your CA friend,:yes!:
Cardie

Cathy,

Sounds like you definitely used that new hip!!!

You do live in a beautiful part of the world...and I can see why you want to get out and enjoy it. :thumb:

I'm almost at 9 weeks and I'm feeling the same way. Physically and mentally. I bet that in 6 months and then even more so at 1 year we'll be wondering what the heck we were so bothered about! Sally

Cathy

Suki here. I really related to your post today. I am exactly 5 weeks post THR revision. I also have a THR in opposite hip. I am 60, and I am also feeling fragile and scared some days, afraid I will never be able to do all the things I love. But i, like you, mostly believe this is going to improve with time, PT, and activity. So anyway, wanted you to know your post today, as well as earlier posts, really resonates. Thank you.

Sending good thoughts your way.

Suki, thank you for stopping by. You are still very early in your recovery. When I think of where I was at 5 wks compared to now, it is a world of difference. I am doing so many things now, in fact I put a 2nd coat of paint on the deck today, you'll get there too :)

Sally, I'm gonna hold on to that thought of being a year out and wondering what I was worried about :wink1:

Cardie, even though it feels like I am close I still need the cane. Just enough of a limp and enough weakness that I can't loose it yet. Had a re-eval at PT today. Have to work more on my glutes, more clams and leg raises to strengthen, thigh really tight, gotta get that stretched out and as everyone, IT band needs stretching too. Still have my work cut out for me but I am feeling like I am doing more and stamina is better. Sure would help if I could lose the cane.(and get up and down off the ground a bit easier haha) Thank you for the reminder to rest. Now that I am doing more, I do forget to take down time too.

Z had Cheryl bring my bike up tonight, going to try my first ride tomorrow

So happy for you! You will continue to get stronger....a close friend lives there too, she often post beautiful pictures on Facebook that are amazing.

Well hello there Cathy, good to see you back and great to hear what a fantastic time you've been having on your break:thumb:

I know what you mean about looking as if you don't need a stick, I can walk from my front door to the car on the drive no problem and I think I look quite recovered but I get to a certain point when walking......and it's not a very long point.....when I know I couldn't go on without my crutch. I'm sure the neighbours must think I take my crutch out with me for effect.lol. I too feel fragile when I am out, that crutch will be staying with me for quite a while yet.

Hope you enjoy your bike ride

Take care

Ann

Wahoo Cathy is back.... so pleased you had a good holiday.

I can honestly say that at 7 months this week, the 'fragile feeling' is mostly gone, but there are times when I check myself about doing a certain movement and when I walk a lot I find exhaustion sets in quick. I have a colleague at work who is 18 months post and said today that there are still days when complete exhaustion over takes her.

Have a wonderful bike ride Cathy, lovely to hear from you - missed you babe :)

:tantrum2: raining out, REALLY wanted to get out on my bike. :hissyfit:

But if I were to look at the half full side of the glass, lucky I got that 2nd coat of paint on the deck yesterday :thumb:

Hi Cathy,

Welcome back and so glad you had a great time with your new hip! I call your feeling "fragile" a loss of confidence in my body and the good news is it does return. In my case I have learned I am a slow healer and it has taken a long time but alas it does return. I still rest most afternoons and find it really helps with the healing process (or I just like naps, lol). Take care and keep up the great progress.

Cathy, I don't know if I should mention this, but you may find, by one year post-op, that you have forgotten a lot of what went on in the early weeks and months after surgery. That's how it is for me and I know other people who had THR back when I did who have noticed the same thing. It's good that you're writing things in this thread, because it may be a useful record for you in the future.

Thanks DIANE,I might not be slow, but I don't think I am a quick healer either and resting when I need it was never something that came easy to me so it is a good lesson to carry into this next phase of my life.

ALEX, I sure hope that is true for me. I think one of my biggest fears is that this will alter my existence forever, so your words mean a great deal to me.

I think we will be changed Cathy... Our bionic new hardware is going to take years off our age! .. We just have to recover some strength and let the body recover and heal... Sorry about the rain and no bike ride :(

Of course, I can only speak for myself, but I do not feel "changed" by THR. It was just another surgery for me and I've had a few of them at this point. The people I know who are years post-op have moved on with their lives and rarely give their hips a thought.

I definitely feel changed by my THR. I spent 10 years in pain---never really feeling good---unable to do anything for more than 15 minutes without having to sit down for 30.

The replacement took all that pain away and made it possible for me to function again. Although, I admit that I don't think of my hip most of the time---it is just a natural part of me now---when I do, I smile and thank my lucky stars.
