Hi Cathy,

How are you doing??? How's the water PT, finding it helpful with those couple things you PT wanted to work through? I'm envious of all the folks that get pool therapy here in the forum, I don't even know of a facility that has that as an offering in my area.... I have been doing little putterings about in our summer season neighborhood pool, the cool water feels good!

I see you mentioning your stretches in Sandy's thread -- are you bored with what you have been doing? Would it help to look in the Bonesmart library at some of the different stretches for things like piriformis, gluteus medius, illiopsoas, adductor just to see if there is anything that looks good to add in to your routine? :what:

Hope you are feeling well,
Cardie

Hey Cardie, that is a darn good idea, to look at some different stretches in the library. I just might do that. I guess it is just hard to stay motivated with it all sometimes.

I am feeling a lot better since my biking excursion. Took almost a full week for my muscles to calm down from those spasms. You know, I causciously can say even the 2 times in the pool helped and my chiro has me laying on the floor at home putting some wedges at certain points of my pelvis to assist with the tilting. ...but in reality who the heck knows what is helping. I sometimes think just changing up the routine helps. You know the old saying "nothing changes if nothing changes".

Basically my pt is saying till I can get more strength, so I can stand on my op leg unassisted, there is not much more she can add, hence, the water, thinking I can gain some strength by doing that. There Is a current you can turn on that I can walk against, and she has a bunch of other things she has me doing. None of it is rocket science, but doing it in the pool enables me to do a bit more. She has me doing faster pace step ups and step downs, squats, biking while supported by a noodle etc. Hopefully it will continue to help. I am sooo ready to lose the cane too. I am walking much better and use it less and less in the house. I feel like something has shifted this past week and maybe I moved a little closer to walking without- I can only hope.

Would you believe we have company again? 2 friends from syracuse n.y., where we moved from. Who knows maybe it is just all this walking I do when people come to visit that has me getting a bit better, or maybe mentally it just makes me feel good to have friends around. I think I am just getting tired of being defined by this recovery and I know You know what I mean by that. Thanks for stopping by. I want an update from you too. I will stop by your thread or start a conversation with you soon. Company here till Monday so I am not sure how much I will be on. All we can do is keep keeping on right?

Hi Cathy,

So good to hear your update (sounds so positive) and that is wonderful that you have visitors and chances to walk with them.

I am always rivited by any PT options and I must say your comment about "biking while being supported by a noodle" had me particularly fascinated with an immediate vision of you, no longer laid back in your kyak, being suspended from the ceiling with a mega-spaghetti and pedalling away!!

You said "I am just getting tired of being defined by this recovery". I know exactly waht you mean, as my whole life seems to revolve around "the hip". But I remember when my life was defined by pain and this is infitely better.

Cathy you sound like you are reaching the next level. Just "Keep up", you will get there.

Warm wishes
Elle

Hey Cathy, great to hear you have settled after the biking excursion... Pool is great, I used the noodle and did the same types of exercises.. But do be careful, because you can overdo it in the pool because of the no gravity sensation..

Me thinks, the friends and the red and white wines and cheese platter nibbles are doing the trick...

Yes, I think you are turning a corner.. Hugs!

Cathy,

Sounds as though you are doing great. I think as we get further out from our surgeries recovery and healing is not as dramatic and much more subtle. Cardie once advised me to not look so hard for turning corners and give myself more time to notice the changes ( wise one that she is!) and it has helped immensely especially with my nerve issues. I now look for healing more month by month. Changes are subtle, slower to come and far between but they are there.

So glad you are enjoying your company, it is good to get our minds off from our hips whenever possible. I live about 20 minutes from Syracuse...small world. Hang in there...

Hi Cathy, hope you are having a fab time with your friends. I just wanted to comment on you saying that you can't stand unsupported on your operated leg yet. This is where I get mucho confused. I have been able to stand on my operated leg, unsupported, for many weeks now BUT I know I could not have done the mega bike ride you done......when you overdone it but you still managed it...kudos for that my girl.....I find it amazing that some of us can do some things that others can't but not other things.....oh that sounds so confusing even to me but do you get what I mean?

It just proves that recovery is so different for us all......which is sometimes hard to understand, after all, our bodies all have pretty much the same design right. I guess it brings home to us (again :umm: ) we must celebrate what we can achieve after surgery and try not to compare with others.

Hope things continue to improve at a steady rate

Take care, enjoy your comany

Ann.x.

Elle, that is quite the image of me you have suspended from the ceiling by a noodle. :heehee:

Hi Sandy, so good to hear from oz, oh you and your advocating for the wine and cheese. however, I DO think it is working haha.

Diane, too funny you live so close to Syracuse. We lived there about 13 years. It was a great place for us, very nice community of people we built there. ...and yes, I agree, that Cardie is a wise one and I thank you for telling me of what she said. It is really true, and what is also true is that with all this company, it has been really great to defocus from the hip.

Annie, I do understand what you are saying. It is a bit crazy how different all our recoveries are, when we are all having the same surgery and the body functions the same. ...and it CAN be confusing sometimes. Thanks for sharing that because I DO need an occasional reminder of the uniqueness of our healing processes.

Thanks all of you, and have a great wknd, cathy

You have a great weekend, too, Cathy. I will get you down off the ceiling spaghetti image and have you smiling and chatting over the wine and cheese (Vermont has amazing cheese. Could give GB a run for its money in the cheddar departement!) Enjoy!

Actually Cathy, I like a nicely chilled bottle of champagne - any on offer? Of course along with some nice smoked cheddar and a very room temperature ready Brie... a little eggplant, chilli, walnut chutney... I'm your girl!

Heheh! Don't get me started, I Luuuvvv my food :) - dream about it really..

Cardie once advised me to not look so hard for turning corners and give myself more time to notice the changes

Hi Cathy,

Ok, this was in reference to a particular movement which I'm having trouble remembering right now...but to make it pertinent to your situation, stop trying to stand on your op-leg for a while and come back to it in a few weeks and you may have one of those taa-daa moments. It's true the progress is more subtle at a certain point, but the healing & strengthening are still continuing.

You must also know that rest is *still* an integral part of your recovery, especially if your PT is trying to rev up your sessions. You have to have plenty of time for your body to recuperate and regenerate. You will gain more strength, but you are still recovering from surgery & adapting to the changes the new hip has created in your soft tissues. It's o.k. to have a little plateau and even take a break from the formal sessions to just do your own stuff if you want. It's never too late for PT, I'm making a little reappearance at mine too...

Good that the friends are coming in every week to distract you from your hip, best therapy yet!! :)

Take care,
Cardie

Wow sandy, you have it going on in the food dept. not big on Brie, but I do make several types of my own chutney and love it on crackers with cream cheese! Mmm good.

Cardie, again very good point. How'd you get so darn smart? Actually after my friends leave I WILL need some rest and am going to take some to recover a bit from all the running around. I have off from PT this week, going to try to get to the pool though, then one session next week and then we might take a break while I keep trying to strengthen at home and in the pool (for a small charge they let you come use the therapy pool when no one else is using it. Actually cheaper than my co-pay for PT)

Nothing changes if nothing changes so mixing it up, taking breaks, like you said, I think all are good to try. Like you also said I can always go back to the PT. thanks again for your wisdom, I do appreciate it. , cathy

Hi Cathy, wise woman our Cardie, I too love it when I read her wisdom :)

This is so weird. A long time ago I use to live in Albany, N.Y. If I remember this is all in the same area. Right. Or have I been out in the West so long I have forgotten that area of the East? How is the heat? I do hope you are taking care of yourself with the heat. Take care :puppysmooze:Tashia:bicycle1:

I feel like the people who I have kind of chosen as my "regulars" are all pretty darn wise, why do you think I latched on to you

...and you are a great newcomer Elle :)

Tasia, Albany is about 2 hours from Syracuse, where we moved from. Burlington VT, where we live now is about 5 hours from Syracuse and Albany is about 1/2 way between the two, so you did not forget out east. Too funny to start communicating with strangers and find here and there you live around the corner, in neighboring states or people used to live where you live etc. it truly IS a small world. Hope everyone had a great wknd. Time to Suck a bit of java before my friends leave this morning, cathy

This thread is wonderful! I am new here and my THR was 3/26. So happy to see that I am not the only one having so many of the same issues.

Paula, are you going to start a thread for yourself to tell us your story? Be glad
To hear it and welcome to you

[Bonesmart.org] New hip 3/7/12
Hooray, I got my first kayak in. I did need a little help getting out, to be safe (and we were in the dark) but hey, I kayaked! hip hip hooray!!! Went out on the 3rd and watched the fireworks from the water which is why we paddled back in the dark. It felt soooo good. While we were watching the fireworks, I said to Cheryl "wish I would have remembered that cushion I got for my b.d." It was a bit uncomfortable sittin that long in that position, but I could deal with it. I waited till today to post just in case, like my first bike ride, something unpleasant occurred, but it didn't.

I am exausted today though. Had company for 5 days, then dinner and fireworks/kayak with new friends on the 3rd, drove to New Hampshire to visit a friend of Cheryl's on the 4th, had a crappy night sleep last night, mostly my back kicking up some, had an appt today and I got home and just could not function. Took me hours to realize (and I could see Cardies words in my head "you still need rest to recover" ) I needed to lay down. I forget to do that. Even though I am not functioning like I want, I just go and go and go sometimes then the body says "done"

So 3 months and 3 weeks out. Doing a lot, still need the cane, though not so much in the house and there are days when I feel like it is only a light touch of support. Still limp without, which hurts SI so i keep using it, though I am working on it. Seeing chiro 2x a month now, PT down to 1 more visit and we are taking a break, though I will go to the PT place a couple times a week use their pool to try to move through the weakness. She feels she can't give me diff stuff till I can support myself on op leg unassisted. She is big on quality vs quantity.

Do I still struggle with comparisons and have a hard time following my own advice ? (turn you head Elle) YES, sometimes, and then other times I just go a day at a time and try to surrender. Trying to get back to my regular meditations in the mornings, c [Bonesmart.org] New hip 3/7/12 uz that helps me and next up, I need to soon start working on getting rid of the weight I put on in the last two "hip years". I am living life, but my body issues still are way too much in the forefront. Gotta believe that "this too shall pass" as I read the other success stories. Gotta tell you, this was a heck of a lot more than I anticipated. I thought at three months I'd be...well it does not matter now does it haha. It is what it is.

We have the next 2 wknds to ourselves and though all these visitors have been fun, I need a break and need to get back to my excercises a bit more regularly, and rest. ...and we need a little time for ourselves. Then 2 more friends for a wknd, then my brother and his family for almost 9 days. ...and I am complaining I can't function the way I want, well I guess I am functioning enough for now

Cathy, sounds like you are zooming around and doing great! I'm so glad you were able to get in some kayacking!!!!! That looks like such a fun sport. I love your picture--you look so relaxed ... A new hip and a kayake--how much better can life be?!
