Hello dear Cathy,

I just LOVED your last post with the details and I could feel exactly what you were describing! Oh WOW...you got on your beloved kyak...that is so amazingly wonderful and no repercussions like the biking, even without cushion!! How beautiful to be out in the water watching fireworks!!! I am such a sucker for fireworks and can just see you with your friends...did you strike the pose again that you have in your most lovely avitar?

Yes, I hear you about "not comparing"...when I saw Z's videos at the early stages, I said, "Why can't I do that? He looks in good health and so am I!" But I also have read very sad and difficult threads that fill my heart with compassion but, ashamedly the feeling "look how lucky you are!" So, isn't there the saying (from Kilhil Gabran maybe??? Tooo lazt to google!) "Do not compare yourself to others, becasue you will always find people greater than you and you will fee bad or you will find people lesser than you and you will feel proud." So just BE. Accept. And EXACTY what you said...SURRENDER (beautiful word!)...rest and sleep! YES, C Mac Cardie's mantra "Rest and Recover" has become one of my favorites!

Glad you and C have some space for yourselves. That is so important and precious.

I have more comments on PT, but first I need to unpack which will take me forever.

Warmest wishes,
Elle
PS What kind of meditation do you do?

Hi Cathy

Being a kayaker myself, I totally get the absolute pleasure and sense of 'life is returning to normal' feeling when you can do previous activities.

I think you are doing fantastically - go girl!

:yes!: Way to go Cathy! I loved to description of your kayak jaunt - sounds like a beautiful way to watch fireworks! And yeah I think it's pretty normal 3+ months out from major surgery to have episodes of "being taken suddenly nap" :snork: These come and go - and the frequency diminishes ....... truly it does. And also with all the company and activity it sounds like wonderful fun - and also tiring. Enjoy your couple of weeks of visitor free time - and rest up for the next bout.

What a lovely report & such cheerful little icons all over the place :)

Glad you got the message that you needed to take a little rest after your appointment -- yes, sometimes the body does just say "done" I've had a couple times when I could barely keep my eyes open in the middle of the day, just needed a tiny nap and then I was good to go for a few more hours.

"It is what it is" that is a very popular saying nowadays to which I always respond in my head "it will be what I make it..." just the control freak in me, I guess!! :rotfl:

Nice to take a break from PT and continue to heal & strengthen with regular life stuff.
Take care,
Cardie

Hi, Cathy, I've been enjoying your posts and catching up with your thread. Congrats on getting back in the kayak. That is one of the activities I'm looking forward to doing post surgery. I spend a lot of time wondering "when?" I don't want to rush things, just curious about timelines. Do you still have or ever have a 90 degree restriction? Getting into and out of the kayak the first few times should be interesting, but I know I won't try at least until the restrictions are lifted. Enjoy your break from hosting guests and your time to catch up on your rest and recovery. Peace, Linda

Mmm, now I realiz I have not been getting notified when posts are on my thread. I also see I was awarded Senior status but it still says member. Josephine:

Thanks Sandy, did not know you kayaked, another reason to like you, not that I need one more

Thanks Deb, Paula, Dorothy and Paula, do you have a thread?

and Cardie, it is what it is, AND it is what you make it. I don't think of that as you being a control freak, but realizing we have to deal with what we have and make the best of it one way or another.

Elle, you are a beautiful addition to the group. Whoever the quote is it is good. Nothing comes of us comparing, though it is human nature to do so. You are also right that we can look around and be thankful. Though I get frustrated, I am very grateful for the abundance in my life in lots of ways. In fact Cheryl and I have a gratitude journal sitting on the coffee table. When I am feeling down, I write down something I am grateful for. I also can look back and see the many things I have to be grateful for. ...and I am still way too stiff to strike the pose in the picture haha

Thanks to you too Linda, I'll bop over to your thread when I get a chance and answer your questions and read your story.

Tried the bike again today, only 2 miles, played it safe, send some energy for a no spasm night

:bicycle1:

Good for you. getting back to those things you love. It makes it all worth it doesn't it. Keep up the good work. :puppysmooze:Tashia:bicycle1:

Cathy,

Just catching up on posts. So happy to hear about your bike ride and hopefully no spasms. You were smart to take it easy.

Ah, the gratitude journal, thanks for the reminder. I need to pull mine out and take a look. It is such a positive thing in general and now with our new hips, more important than ever.

Also glad you are having company and getting a break from focusing on the hip. I love your references of how that fills you emotionally. Have a great day. In NY we're having this incredible run of beautiful summer weather, hope you are getting it as well. Take care.:bicycle1:

Hey there Cathy,

Well, we are all waiting to hear if the heavy restraint of biking 2 miles (last time 6, right?) was rewarded with a spasm-less night?

A gratitude journal is a brilliant idea (oh, dianemarie, you have one, too!) And very beautiful that you and Cheryl keep one together right there on your coffee table. Affirmations of the good in our lives can sometimes give us just the energy we need to get through a down time or disappointment.

I have no doubt that relaxed pose will be yours again (still boggles my mind how a human can get into one of those things even without a THR!)

Warm regards coming your way for a great week. Are the blueberries and corn in yet???

xoElle

Pleased to report NO SPASMS :yay:
and I got another kayak in this weekend. I got in myself but still needed help getting out. Have to practice getting out with my other leg. Realize now i always used to put the op leg out first. Trying to not be embarrassed needing help out while people on beach are watching [Bonesmart.org] New hip 3/7/12 After a couple weeks of pushing a little bit I was glad to get adjusted this a.m. She said my pelvic tilt was less than last time, so that's good and I could feel it was not as bad.

Thanks for checking in Elle, cathy

Great news all the way around! Especially less pelvic tilt, little by little, we get there. And being able to kayak, how wonderful. Any time in public that I need help I always think I may be helping someone else who needs help feel a little less self conscience. After all, we all need help in this life and thank goodness we can offer it one way or another, such as the forum.

Keep enjoying your new found freedoms. Love the motto!:happydance:

Cathy..... you have done SO much. Just your photo alone that you post gives off the positive essence of who you are as a person. You have come SO far.... the kayaking, biking... all of it... and guess what? When I've done that much, I feel pain again too. I don't think it's "bad." (I should have had children.... )

You are tremendous! Again, I encourage you to give yourself credit. I think I am just jealous that the rest of you don't have to go back to work so soon!

I am celebrating one day early my 53 bday (ex-boyfriend from New Orleans just texted and said 53 is the new 35); as an aside - any NOLA lovers? Uncle Lionel passed away on Sunday. Anyway, I put on a CD that I love and am DANCING (not a good dancer).... but I can MOVE.

Cathy, you have been MOVING. I applaude you!

Best,

Alicia

Awesome update!!! So glad that you got back on the bike & didn't have any spams :)

I have always needed help getting out of the boat -- even with two strong legs and no fake hip.... it's a sign of grace to accept the help of someone & so much more graceful than struggling (I think).

You are doing great, Cathy :thumb:
Take care,
Cardie

Cathy, the August issue of Yoga Journal has a series of poses for paddlers and kayakers. There are a couple of poses that you may not be ready for yet, but there are others that you could probably do. Might be worth a discussion with your PT...
