You know, I have to say, I feel like I was not very flexible even before my hip issues. I would off and on take a yoga class and never really get anywhere. When I see you Alex, and Cardie and Z and others post all these stretches, I feel like the tin man from oz who lost the oil can. Even now, with biking a bit and kayaking and doing more in general, I come home and stretch but it is so slow going on gaining any movement. Maybe I don't do it long enough or enough in general, not sure, but I will look into the yoga journal for sure. Lots of times I feel very stiff.

I do get a little confused too on how much to do and think sometimes my PT is a bit overcauscious with worrying about dislocation...that being said she really is about quality vs quantity and I guess that is a good thing. Then, of course, there is my own motivation to be consistent with my excercises, but THAT is another story

Thanks everybody for your input :)

Your PT is correct 'quality vs quantitiy' Cathy honey.

It is so important to remember what they did to you in the OR. They dislocated your hip, they sawed off the top of a major leg bone, they hammered, they pulled, they stretched... This is complex surgery!

Everyone thinks they should be further along, but the body has to heal at many, many deep layers. This can take up to two years! I know that no one wants to hear this, and as humans we think, me included, that we can beat the bodies timeframe, but quite simply, we can't. All we can do is assist it.

I have a very good friend whose PT pushed her and dislocated her hip and she spent months in hospital in a frightful state. Another who rushed because of a pending holiday and ended up with another two operations.

There is a very good award winning ap called Muscle Pro 3D put out by Novo (from memory) it is worth getting to assist you with recovery. It shows you each layer of muscle right down to the bone, including tendon, cartlidge you can rotate it. There is one for bones, one for nerves. They are an invaluable tool for us practitioners to show clients what is happening in their body.

Slow and steady hon, this new hip is for life :)

Hi Cathy!

Know what you mean about feeling unflexible. I feel like someone poured cement in my hip joint and lower vertebrae when I wasn't looking! Although the joint has me moving without pain again and ROM is improved, it is gereatric yoga for me for now! But, wait! Yoga is not about being flexible...it is about BEING. So when you said you took some yoga classes and "never got anywhere", that was because you were already there!

So agree with Sandy's warnings above about being careful! Stretching is essential, but know how to take care of yourself. (I imagine someone getting in and out of kyaks is quite adept at that...and hey, speaking of, that takes BOTH flexibility and balance...it doesn't matter what leg you are using or if someone is helping you!) Is your PT new at the job? That would explain the overcaution-which is GOOD! Don't want to end up in one of the scenarios that Sandy described above!

Glad you had no spasms with the bike ride!! Did you ever go berry picking?

Sorry your family's crops in Wisconsin are suffering. That is not good news at all. Hopefully the weather will improve, although I know that is not helpful now.

Hugs
Elle

Cathy,

Sounds like you have a wise PT. My PT has her doctorate and is overly cautious and so am I. So, as I am ready to do more and more she still will say, "that is enough for today, we don't want to over do it" as she has gotten to know me well and my limits.

As far as doing my PT at home I am like you, not always as motivated as I would like to be. However, as I heal and do more natural movement throughout the day (walking, laundry, errands, etc.) I feel like this is strengthening me as much as the PT exercises.

Sandy and I are both about 8 months out and I am just beginning to feel somewhat normal again. It really does take time and as I look back I realize I just couldn't have speeded it up even if I wanted to. So, might as well enjoy the ride :bicycle1: (I love this smilie, especially the "coasting" part) and go along with it. Have a super relaxing, restful, restorative day!

Sandy
Thank you for your gentle message. Yes, this ole Midwestern blue collar gal sometimes thinks she can just pull herself up by her bootstraps and plow through anything. Life and the body do have their own timing, and when I respect that, I do much better and I learn layers of this lesson many many times in the spiral of my journey. ( I will chk out the app, thanks)

Diane
you also, thanks for the reminder to enjoy the ride, it is sooo true. ...and I can be hard on myself always thinking I "should" be doing more when in reality when I am not doing the excercise, it is not like I am laying around, I am out doing other things and moving my body in other ways, also a good reminder

Elle, ah yes, I WAS already there, just as I am here now. Sometimes when I feel my brain going places I don't want I say to myself " where are you? I am here, and what time is it? It is now. " makes me pause and relax.

How did you all get so wise. Thank you so much everybody. After reading your posts I feel, in the moment and at peace, what a great way to carry on with my day [Bonesmart.org] New hip 3/7/12

Cathy, you... AGAIN prove to be such a special person.

And, a Midwesterner? This all makes sense now. I'm born/raised in St.Paul/MPLS.... sheesh.. what more chan I say more about us as people? We just DO it, right?

I have had a differential in my right leg my whole life... noticed it in pants, wardrobes, etc. Then when I picked up Pilates 10 years ago... I was never as flexible in my right leg. But, of course, I forced myself through it.

You get my Academy Award as Person of the Year (in my opinion). You are doing your best, and your best will be different every day (ever read "The Four Agreements"?)

Night.

Hey Cathy

I think that is what most women are like, we just keep pushing on, pulling ourself up and keep going. - that's what we do!

Hope all is going well...

Alicia, Mmm, another midwesterner huh? Until we moved to Syracuse about 13 yrs ago, I lived in Milwaukee my whole life." A great place on a great lake" haha (for out of U.S. peeps, it is on Lake Michigan, one of the our 5 Great Lakes). Good reminder about the agreements. I am going to pull that book off the shelf again. Easy read and obviously some things that would be helpful.

Sandy, I hear you sister, yes it is what we do and I am well and finally going out this morning to pick some of the areas early blueberries. Picked up some Pennsylavania peaches the other day. They are some of the sweetest peaches, Mmmm, canned some peach jam.

As my Cheryl always says on her way out to work MAKE it a good day

Hi Cathy, Oh, did they forget to tell you that as part of this group you must share your peach jam with me???!!! :spin: That does sound yummy! I have a friend who is getting ready to can some bread and butter pickles--another YUM! I love those things!

I bet it feels great to be able to do this stuff without hip pain! Yippeee!!!! I think it's so great that you are so active. I can just feel energy coming through your posts :-)

Have fun!

Dorothy

Great to hear you are doing fine Cathy take care.

Hiya Cathy another tin man here. I've never been very flexible because of my ROM in my bad leg so didn't bother even trying some things.....it's just not the same with only one leg to work with.lol.

It is confusing whether we are doing too much or too little. Trying to listen to our bodies every day is tiring but we are all improving day by day if only a tiny bit. I think you are doing fantastic from your biking to your kayaking, Action girl will soon be back in full swing...just give her time :thumb:

Hope you managed to make it a good day

Take care

Ann.x.

Mmmmmm... Cathy all at lovely fresh fruit and berry picking... Makes mouth water. hope you had a ball babe :)

Oh, so finally, the blueberries!! Heaven! And the bushes are at a reasonable level for THR picking...as opposed to groveling for strawberries...too much golfers reach there! Love your Cheryl's saying; indeed the goodness of the day is in our hands.

Hi Cathy,

Well, I thought I'd responded to this a few days ago but must have pushed the wrong buttons someplace...

Stiffness is a very common sensation that others report after THR, seems to be part of the recovery process -- maybe it's a way the body helps protect us from doing tooooo much tooooo soon???? There was a hippy that recently came back to report on her progress over the years and she'd had an oil can tattooed onto her hip!!

Oh, and those pictures of the stretches -- I doubt that I look nearly as fantastic as the people shown when I do my stretches!! Remember they are "professionals" Work with what you've got and give yourself plenty of time. My PT guy used to tell me that they see improvements in ROM from 3 to 5 years out from surgery.

Picking berries is pretty good PT!! Hope you didn't have to wrestle any bears :heehee:
Take care,
Cardie

Yes, Cardie, stiffness comes and goes at all stages of recovery - at least that has been my experience..

How was the fruit picking Cathy?

Wow, Milwaukee????????? After I left MPLS... I went to Chicago, so I frequented Milwaukee almost for 10 years for an annual art show there; we shared the same LARGE and COLD lake! :)

And, the berry picking and peaches. Oh, how I miss fresh fruit here in FL! Sounds like you are in a beautiful area of the country.

"Make it a great weekend!"

Alicia

Hey everyone, Sunday a.m. Thought I would catch up.

DOROTHY, guess I better get going on making more jam as I am sure you are not the only one haha

BILLY, thx for stopping by. Made me think of when I was young, my mom used to make bread and the smell of it was one of the only things that could get us kids down out of our cold attic bedrooms on the weekend.

ANNIE, though I wouldn't wish it on you, I am glad to know I am not alone in needing that oil can

ALICIA, you are cracking me up, it truly is a small world

CARDIE, love the oil can idea, too funny. Good to know about the stiffness. Sometimes hard to know what is from surgery, what is my old back stuff, what is new stuff, just riding the waves of it hopin one day I won't feel so old.

SANDY, ELLE, the blueberry picking was fabulous. I went alone during the week and Cheryl and I tried a diff farm yesterday. The bushes were literally dripping with berries and yes, for a hippie, very easy to pick. The hot/dry weather was not good for the rasberries around here, but the Bberries love it. Since it cooled off today I am going to make some blueberry cherry jam, (after a little kayak) but don't tell Dorothy haha

:heehee: FUNNY STORY :heehee: as you know for short things, around the house I am using my cane less and less. So when we were out picking, I had my bucket around my waist and did not need my cane for walking the steps in between bushes so I hung it on a branch and lost it :rotfl: when we were done and ready to walk back, and I needed my cane, we had to walk up and down several aisles to find it. Good sign as far as recovery, but funny none the less

Hope you are all Making it a good weekend.

Look at you! Doing PT in the BBerry Bushes! How envious I am..... you would think we would have all sorts of "picking farms" here in FL.... but it's all political down here - migrant workers, etc.... and, we don't get "real" fruit!

I think you should label your jam/jelly whatever you are going to do with the berries.... I love mixing them up with Greek yogurt, ice and VOILA... Breakfast with a whole grain (Ezekial Brand) piece of bread.

Night, night......

Sounds like you DID make it a good weekend (God Bless Cheryl!)

Alicia

Yeah! So glad you got to the blueberries!!!

Very funny about the cane! I bet that is an auspicious omen for the future!

Glad you had a wonderful weekend.

Elle

Hi Cathy, your jam sounds lovely, I'm very impressed at your cooking skills, don't think I would have the patience to make jam but I do like picking fruit.

Funny story about leaving your cane, I was just recently talking about that on Angies thread....it"s what I do in the big clothes stores, it's easier to relocate in those though than amongst rows and rows of blueberries. You are definitely getting better that's for sure, it's good to hear :)

Take care

Ann
