TKR Nanners adventure to the other side

Josephine I did wean off the Dilaudid, but take about 1 mg with 2 Percoset at night. I was originally taking 4 mg every 3 hours, but doc never responded to me on the refills, so I weaned down afraid to run out. During the day the pain is not as bad, I can generally get away with 1/2 or 1 Percoset every 4 hours or so. But after about 3-4 pm is when the pain starts getting really bad. And thats when I go to the 1/2 tab of Dilaudid (= 1 mg) and 2 Percoset (each tab is 5/325mg). I have Crohns disease also, so have a very sensitive gut. I get so scared sometimes, because I just can't get better. Hubby has been a doll and keeps making me pots of beef stew in the slow cooker. That seems to agree well with me and is at least getting some nutrients in me. Oh I am icing and elevating and sometimes I need to do heat on my hips cuz they hurt alot too.

Josephine, any ideas on how long this rotting feeling is going to last? How much longer the pain is going to be this intense? Sorry to ask so many questions of you, but you seem to have the most experience after working in this business 50+ years. Thank you Jo for your help. Hugs!

Hi Nanners, I had been waiting to hear how you were going as you had surgery the same time as me but had complicated health problems. I was most horrified and saddened by yourexperience, noone should have to tolerate that neglect and hard heartedness, I am so sorry. It is now nearly 4 weeks since the op and at home with family caring for you, I hope you are in a much better place. I was so fortunate, stayed in hospital for 6 days and the nursing staff were tremendous - with one exception and she was horrible, sarcastic and uncaring and the night she was on had to be the night I had a bad experience with not being able to get to bathroom in time...Getting in and out of bed was the most painful, took me a couple of weeks after I got home before I could lift my leg on its own. Yesterday was my first venture outside and walked to my friend's place just a short block away - felt very proud of myself. Good luck with your progress, I am sure with all you have been through over the years you are a very strong person mentally and that helps a lot.

I'm sorry too, Gail, to hear that you are still suffering with the nausea. As you know (I think) I suffered with it too, badly last week. Ray was so worried he called our GP on Friday and she made out a prescription for me immediately and those pills seem to have done the trick. Although I do still wake with 'morning sickness'. It is a bit like being pregnant, as I have also gone off tea and coffee. My appetite still hasn't returned to normal and I can still go through most of the day without eating anything apart from fruit.

I do sincerely hope you at least start to feel better soon, my dear friend

KathyH you sound alot like me....I have to literally force myself to eat. I had an okay day yesterday, but this morning the nausea has returned. I had alot more pain lastnight, so I took more pain meds, hence the nausea again.

Thanks all for the support, it means alot. Hugs!

It's a vicious circle isn't it, Gail? My Mum has been 'bullying' (for want of a better word) me to eat, the same as Ray. I can't seem to get it into their heads that if you can't face eating, you just cannot eat, grrr!

Gail and Kathy, I'm so sorry you poor ladies are really battling that nausea feeling!:console2: :console2:It's tough enough to be feeling weakened after TKR, but to add insult to injury is the pits! I hope things settle down for you soon or you both will waste away to nothing and we sure wouldn't want that! I hope you get well soon and can move on with your recoveries.
Best regards my BoneSmartie friends!:friends:

Would you believe they just called to tell me my refill is ready! I asked for that over a week ago, and have weaned off it cuz I thought he wasn't giving me more!!!! Now to find someone to pick it up for me and bring it to me. Ugh!

Just wondering about other pain meds in the Percoset level. Strangely before my Ltkr I was taking 1/2 tab of Percoset a few times a day for chronic pain with no issues. Now after the Tkr I am taking hirer levels of Percoset and it is tearing up my stomach, something fierce. So wondering about other options I might discuss with my doc. I cannot take Ultram or Tramadol, they kill my stomach. Also, cannot used Ibruprofen or Aleve type meds or aspirin, causes intestinal bleeding in me becuz of my Crohns Disease.

Secondly, is nausea a big problem for many after the TKR? Thanks for your thoughts. Hugs!

So frustrated this is taking so long! I wish I could get to the docs, as I feel so rough. But just taking a shower wipes me out for the day. And the thought of getting up and dressed too, just makes me tired thinking of it.

For those praying folks, could I please ask you to pray for me. I am feeling rather blue and honestly a little forgotten. And so so tired of feeling bad. Sorry I complain so much, but I have feel horrid. I have never had this rough of recovery. But I have never had a tkr either. Told my husband the other day, that I regret doing it. But he said remember how bad the pain was before, and he is right. But its hard to look on the brightside right now. Hugs and I hope you are doing much better than me. Hugs!

Dear Gail, I wish I lived near you. I'd be over in a flash to run errands, or just provide some comfort. I'm so sorry you're suffering this much. I, too, wished I'd never done it, during the earlier weeks. I didn't have the nausea, though. That's the worst! Did you ever talk to your doctor about oxycontin? I think that's the form of percoset that lasts 12 hours. I think I'd be on the phone with surgeon's nurse or GP until they got it right.

I am praying for you! Hugs, my Friend.
Elizabeth

Awe Gail, I so feel for you, because I remember those earlier weeks so well and you are so right it is so frustrating. My saying it will get better doesn't carry much weight right now, because you're in the moment, so you are entitled to the blues and a huge cry party now and then. Tears do help clean the soul, so don't hold back and feel your anquish it's all part of the healing process.:console2:

Get well soon my friend and even in little bits and pieces try and stay positive.:friends:

Thank you Jackie!! Your support is so important to me. I so need it! My hubby wants me to go to the Er, but I am just too weak to even dress and get there. And I feel so bad about asking friends and family for rides etc. My Crohns is making this so much harder. I think if I every have someone on this forum with Crohns or its sister condition Ulcerative Colitis, I would have them think long and hard about doing this surgery. We have extremely sensitive insides, that just makes everything worse. Big hugs my friend and thanks again!!

Bless your heart! I have been praying for you. Try not to feel too bad about asking friends and family to help if you need it. Just think, you might be depriving someone of the blessing of helping out! I understand how you feel, but sometimes we just have to ask for a little help. If you are feeling that weak, maybe hubby is right, maybe you should go to the ER. There could be something else going on with you. Don't worry about getting dressed, brush your teeth and hair and put on a robe. They won't care what you look like!

I am going to give this till Monday and then I am going to go to the ER. I can't get my guts to settle down for nothing. I tried sitting up for awhile this morning and not laying down thinking that might help, but nope still nauseous.

Can anyone tell me why so many of us have nausea?

Oh Nanners, I feel so bad for you. With my hip replacement it was about 3 1/2 weeks of not feeling very good, but when talking to the anesthetist we narrowed it down to the general and the morphine. Didn't do either of them this time and no tummy troubles at all. You have more problems with your crohns though, so not sure why you don't get better. Wish I could help.
