Jo I have been setting the alarm on my phone, so that I am taking the pain meds around the clock. I have called for the refill but was thinking of something else. Wouldn't it be better to put me on one of the long lasting pain meds that you take 1 every 12 hours and then have something for the breakthru pain? And if there are 12 hr meds like that does anyone know what the names of those meds are? I am hoping the doc calls and maybe I can discuss this option with him. Thanks!
 
Gail, I found out about that too late after my surgery. I'll store that knowledge just in case I have to do the other knee. I believe one of the 12 hr. meds is called oxycontin. I wondered why my OS didn't suggest that for me, but he wasn't really up on trying different meds. He had his standard that he used, and that was that!
 
I put the call in for a refill of Dilaudid, but since lastnight have been switching between the Dilaudid and Percoset. I would like to go down to a lower pain med as the Dilaudid has me too loopy and tired all the time. So far so good with the switch up. Had a BAD gut day yesterday, and slept all day. Nothing seemed to work to settle my gut, but the sleep really helped. I didn't think I would sleep all night, but surprisingly slept pretty well. I haven't heard back for the refill, but if they say the rx is ready today, I will have niece pick it up for me. I am going to try not using it unless I have to. But it will be nice to have here just in case. Hugs!
 
Definitely take what you need. You've got 3 things going on: the knee replacement, fibro, and crohns. I'd say you're entitled to have decent pain relief!! And don't worry, it won't be forever.

Just hate how the pain meds are making me feel. And the stomach upset is one of the problems. My guts get upset and it throws me backwards. I have a herbal tea I drink and most times that calms the tummy down, but not working so well to ease the guts issues caused by the pain meds. Hugs!
 
I know some will not be happy with me, but I am weaning off the Dilaudid. Its upsetting my guts so much, that I can barely get around. I still have the Percoset and was using a small dose of that before surgery, so should be ok. Pain is manageable, and I have been adding a little Tylenol in there too. I also called two days ago for a refill of the Dilaudid and have not gotten a response from the doc yet, and thats with another call this morning. So its seems its best I wean off, before I have more problems.

These pain meds have affected my at home PT, and leg is quite stiff, so if I can wean down I can start working a bit more on my home PT again. Today is day 2 weaning! Please keep me in your thoughts as I go down on this med. I am so sick of feeling like I have the stomach flu all the time. Hugs~ P.S. Anyone have sensitive guts, and found a pain med that didn't upset your stomach too bad?
 
How could we be upset at you? You know your body better than anyone. And we all have different reactions to meds. My gosh lady, you have been through so much.

But as a "professional weaner off dilaudid", please do wean gradually. Some meds you can go cold turkey..I ended up with abdominal pain and sneezing when I stopped the dilaudid too quickly. The next time, I was taking 1/2 tablet every other day before I stopped all together and I am sure that erveryone's experience will be different. I did lots of Google searches to come up with an answer so with your stomach issues, go easy.

Well I am down to 2 mg every 4 hours. Tomorrow we will try going down to 1 mg every 4 and lean more on the Percoset. So far the pain has been manageable. When it starts to ache a bit, I just go to the ice and elevation and that helps some.

Thank you for the support MerryS, I really need it. I knew my guts were going to play up on me, I just didn't realize it would be this much. My niece was just telling me that the on call doc at the rehab was talking to me about using a longterm pain med that lasts 12 hrs with something milder for breakthru. I guess I was too loopy to remember that:( Dang it!
 
Nanners, I don't even know what didlaudid is. You know like Vicodin is hydrocodone and Percoset is Oxycodone. Anyway for me, I couldn't have morphine and they didn't give me any after surgery and I didn't get sick, and I told them I didn't want Onycodone as that upset my tummy too. So I just went with the Vicodin and I was fine with that and now only take it at night and do Tramadol and Tylenol and Ibuprofen during the day. Talk about a druggy I sure feel like one. But I know the Ibuprofen must be helping with the swelling as I am able to ride my recumbent bike now. Did two 15 minute rounds with it today, plus some shopping. Hoping to see light at the end of the tunnel.
 
I so wish I could use Aleve or Ibruprofen! But with having Crohns they cause bleeding in my intestines, so not allowed. But ice is my best friend right now. You are only a couple weeks ahead of me and doing so good Debbie. I am just stuck on the couch or my bed with walks to the kitchen and bathroom. Hopefully I will get to where you are soon. Hugs!
 
Gail, don't be too hard on yourself about the meds or anything else for that matter. You do have a lot on your plate. As Merry said, you know your body better than anyone. You just have to try different things and go with what works for you. No one here would be upset with you.

This is such a difficult recovery! I was so emotional, touchy, depressed, anxious, everything you can imagine. I was so upset, in so much pain, felt like my OS, PT, and even husband were all against me, pushing me to do things that were torture for me. I just want you to be as comfortable as you possibly can, whatever that may mean as far as your meds go. You're fortunate that you started out here with bonesmart. I didn't find them until I'd gone through 6 of the worst weeks of my life.

So I'm praying that you find the meds that are easier on your stomach.

Nanners, do be sure you are counting all the acetaminophen if you take Tylenol along with Percoset (which has acetaminophen in it). Also be sure you aren't taking allergy meds or anything else with that in it as well. Stay within 4000mg in a day.

You do have some special issues and you must do what works for you. Have you tried Tramadol?
 
Jamie I have tried Tramadol in the past and it upsets my stomach really badly. I still feel awful and have no appetite. Tried to eat some toast this morning and it was like chewing sawpaper. Been drinking some herbal tea to try to calm the guts down.

I am feeling pretty low as this is all getting to be too much. I tried to do some mild PT this morning, but it just made the knee swell and get stiff again. I feel like I cant win for losing. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers, its a rough one today. Hugs!
 
I have a question that I have been meaning to ask for awhile. Can the new knee parts (metal) get too cold from the icing? Sometimes I am icing and it feels like I have to remove the ice as the prothesis feels like its freezing and makes it ache? Just curious. Hugs!

Hang in there, Gail. You are definitely having a rough beginning on the journey to recovery. But YOU WILL GET THERE in your own time. I'm so sorry you are having so many gastric problems and can't eat. Praying that all this will resolve itself soon for you.

Take a break from icing if it feels too cold--let things warm up in between. but with your pain med/stomach issues it sounds like icing is definitely your friend.
 
Thank you BottomShollow for the prayers, I am needing them. Just been resting all day. I was able to get a little soup down me this afternoon. Pain hits me hard in the evenings, so I use 2 of the Percoset and thats helping some. I am going to keep the Dilaudid for those extreme days, but have to stop it too, as I think it is adding to the tummy problems. Hugs!
 
I was taking 2 oxycodone every 4 hours when I was just home.Take your pain meds when you need them. I know exactly what you are feeling. I felt the same way. Try to make yourself as comfortable as you can. We are all here for you. Have some chocolate, too. HUGS!!!:console2:
