I think for short-term use the thick egg crate foam topper might be worth a try but I'd have to be pretty sure that the memory foam mattress would make enough difference to be worth the price. We don't have the memory foam mattress as I would feel sorta like the person in your pic! Can't quite sell myself on it's merits although people who have them are in awe of their quality of sleep.

Mysterious, weird feeling pains are kind of the hallmark of major soft tissue healing. Have you started intensive physical therapy yet? That'll be a whole new set.

Oh my goodness the PT beat me up. I was thinking while I was on the exercise bike how much pain I was in when I tried exercise biking before surgery. Also he had me standing on just my operative leg for a stretch and that's also something I couldn't do prior to surgery.

A friend of mine that works with PTSD patients in the Atlanta area refers to PT as "pain and torture". She thinks it's funny. I do not.

It's hard to know where that magic line is--the one between doing good and causing damage??!! I was afraid I had overdone it today but I'm ok tonight. Just keep pushing forward.

BTW, I saw on TV today that September is a great month for deals on new mattresses.

@muckingabout, I got those electric shock things too. Don't know what causes them, and they are annoying. They usually only happen to me at night.

They are weird aren't they, @cthipster?

@beachgal I'm pretty comfortable with what I'm being asked to do. It just keeps coming back to trying to rebuild and stretch my muscles, more from my pre-surgical condition than from the surgery. My groin muscle just kills, straight leg lifts are so tough.

I swear though I looked at him like he told me to fly when he told me to stand on one foot on my operative leg.

In other news. My daughter still had a pillowy mattress topper from college, so I'm going to give that a go tonight to see how it goes.

My groin hurts more than anywhere else when I do PT. Sometimes I just have to stop and catch my breath. It hurt like the dickens before surgery so no surprise.

Hope the topper helps. Worth a shot!!

@muckingabout, please be careful. The PT had me stand on the operated leg, and I thought she was crazy. Turns out my instincts were right, but I ended up being polite and doing what the PT told me to do. When I put my full weight on the leg, I felt this giant torqueing or corkscrew motion in my leg. Very painful. Plus it was scary as hell, and I ended up in the emergency room to make sure I didn't damage the hip. It turns out I pulled a muscle or two, which is not that big a deal, but it wasn't worth it. You are a few weeks ahead of where I was when this happened, but STILL. If you are not sure, don't put your full weight on the leg at first.

I have not used any PTs on this second hip replacement. Once I'm a couple months out, I may check in with one.

I just tried those straight leg lifts on the ground. Ouch! It's a lot easier in bed. :)

Are you keeping the other leg bent at knee??

@beachgal, I was doing it with both legs extended. I just did it with one leg bent. Still hurts in those hip flexors, but much easier than with other leg fully extended.

The way my PT taught me was good leg bent and really pressing down in through the foot. The leverage makes a big difference.

I tried straight leg raises once, hurt myself so much.. That exercise went into my rubbish bin as not suitable or useful for me. I figured that all I wanted to do was walk, and it wouldn't be with my leg raised. After that piece of logic, I felt happier not to try again - take care.

I had PT today and oh Goodness my back. I've referred pain down my leg for the week coming from my back. She worked on my gluts and I thought I'd cry. On traction again...the good news I can do all the exercises and have a full range of movement. I just can't walk right!

@muckingabout it sounds like you are on the ball and doing great!

For those of you playing along at home, I just got up. That is correct--7am est after going to bed at midnight. I woke up for one potty break and went right back to sleep. I had that pad on my bed, plus I found a small pillow I used to get my heel off the mattress.

Good morning @muckingabout, I too just got up (NY as well), I had my first busy day yesterday. Went to pool with some girlfriends for about 2 hours and then went to dinner with hubby and even went for an evening stroll with him down my block and back. So i was exhausted when i plunked into bed around 9pm (elevated leg), took two pain meds (to take the edge off) and fell asleep around 11 or so. Hope you're feeling better and recovery is going smoothly for you. Take care.

Well, I can see that the BS gang is all here this morning, bright and early! I'm awake earlier than usual because hubby and dog are arriving around lunchtime and I wanted to put a roast in the crock pot for a nice dinner tonight. I'm also going to try and change the sheets on our bed but we'll see if I'm successful.

@muckingabout, I think your sleep last night is an improvement!!?? Maybe the topper helped a bit with the extra pillow and you'll start to feel better with the good rest. Happy!

I don't think our leg lifts are meant to be done except with one knee bent. My PT gal frowned when I tried to do one while I was still inhouse PT. I can tell a difference in the stretch of my groin muscle since I've been doing them with bent knee this week. Had to start with five and work up.

@NoraJ, great news on ROM even if your gait is still off!! They say it will eventually straighten out. I had to pay attention to my op knee while climbing stairs yesterday as it wanted to turn in. PT gal spotted it and made me redo flight more slowly. I think I get in a hurry and am careless.

@toohip, fun day at pool with friends and nice evening with sweetie! That a good tired!!! Makes us appreciate our normal lives waiting just ahead!!
