@muckingabout
Nice to hear of your progress, both with PT and how you are feeling about your recovery at 3 weeks. I expect the addition of driving will also really improve your quality of life and be a great new addition. The stairs without a cane or crutch probably makes things feel more normal and another welcome step in healing. How often will you go to PT? Does your husband drive you for now? My next post-op exam is next week and expect to have outpatient PT ordered by the OS. Until now, I am doing all my given exercises, walks outside and just added some time on the exercise bike on Monday.

Sorry to hear of your sleep pattern. Frustrating indeed. I think your list of solutions are some good ideas. I tend to fight the mid day nap, but when I seems necessary I just accept it. Have you taken or thought about Melatonin at night? I am still sleeping on my back still and take a small amount to help to ensure a normal sleep. I also have taken Tylenol PM, but would rather stick with the more natural way

OMG Muckingabout, I just tuned in on your recovery thread and have been giggling for an hour! It sounds like you are doing great. The fact that you are using a cane only at 3 weeks is really fantastic! I feel like my own silly impatience is my worst enemy sometimes, and yeah - when three simple things constitute "overdoing it" - what. Then there are all these anterior approach people bench-pressing their own weight while still in the hospital. Anyway, kudos and keep the laughs coming - we need you!! Me, I just got my staples out and feel like my thigh fat is gonna start spilling out next time I get up to pee.

@muckingabout You are doing great, leaps ahead of me! I think you are right on about getting frustrated about not sleeping. I am in the guest room by myself and although I miss sharing our room, I am happy to be alone. I take up most of a queen bed with all my pillows, can turn my light on & off as I like, etc. When I wake up, I start to read right away and usually that will send me back off in minutes. An option to being in room alone might be to get a booklight. Small, but effective to light your book and not likely to disturb your sleeping partner. I find if I let myself stress about not sleeping for even a minute, it spins out of control and brings out stress about countless other things. Very happy for you that your 1st PT went well, Yay!!

LOL @ the menopause ~ saw that after I posted! Maybe someone thought you didn't have enough on your plate right now? *** Nope, she's coping with the hip, let's add hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia and lightening fast Bi***h attacks *** It's a test @muckingabout ~ watch out for the multiple choice section! :)

Patience!! There was such a difference between my week 3 and 4, I think you'll be amazed. Just don't give up. Keep doing your PT and push yourself a bit everyday. It will come.

Hahaha on the visitor that hasn't made the appearance yet. With a little luck, it will go away. Just one more thing to not fret over. Glad that's not on my plate.

Have a restful night, my friend. :-)

What the hell is this??? It feels like someone is taking a taser to my incision. It's like an electric shock that's making my whole leg twitch.

In other news, I found an easy way to wean off my cane. My hand hurts too much to use it.

I'm a mess today.

@muckingabout... you are doing great! The incision pain is an odd one... I still get the odd funny look as I give my incision a little rub when it aches... to others I'm rubbing my bottom ... to me I'm massaging my incision! But funny I am more aware of my incision now than I was in the first few weeks. Not sure why other than its a long incision and a lot of healing is going on underneath.

I have read about a cane hurting ones hand... I think that's why a arm crutch is more common here. Less pressure o. Your hand as your shoulder is taking more of the burden. An easy day should do the trick and let your hand recover.

Hopefully you can do something nice for yourself to give you a pick me up. ..

@muckingabout If it makes you feel any better, I think I had a couple of those twitches too. I just chalked it up to nerves and muscle working themselves back to where they want to be. It did not stick around. As @NoraJ mentioned, there is a lot of healing going in underneath. I expect a few more nerve jolts will still be in my future. Could it be your tissue responding to some of your new PT too? I hope they go away with some icing, stretches or rest. You are really doing great, we are only 5 days off in our surgery dates and I can often relate to your observations. I too hope you have a little 'pick me up' or some way to spoil yourself to shake the lull. Just remember there are welcome and understanding ears here for you

Well, I don't wear short shorts but I love smooth, tanned legs! My new dress is about three inches above my knees and will look so much better without the random hairs sticking out on white legs. Flaking. Haha

So what is this incision pain thing, @muckingbout? I run errands for six hours and return to find you in a pickle?? It does sound like soft tissue healing. Have you been massaging your incision or the area around it?? Just wondered if that could have irritated it??

You need a glass of wine. Wait, I'll be right over. Got a bottle chilled already.

@muckingabout I am so sorry you are feeling so rough today. I too get those though spasms a lot (have done for at least two weeks now). I am not sure if mine are super pronounced due to my overall leg atrophy but they are sometimes so intense I think I could see my thigh jump if I lifted my skirt/nightgown. Icing helps a bit and I think gentle massage helps me a bit also. I think it was either Josephine or one of the other moderators here that I saw address it as normal. When it's intense it is harsh enough to wake me at night and keep me awake. Twice I have sat on my shower bench and let the warm water run on my thighs. By the time I got out of the shower it had passed but not sure if that was coincidence or if the warm water helped. I do hope you feel better soon and I think a relaxing glass of wine might be just the ticket.

@beachgal @grnplatebrd @NoraJ @Carriemay60 thanks for your responses! I'm okay, just flummoxed that my body is coming up with new stuff 3 weeks in.

I think I mentioned that I tried driving with my husband last night and it went fine, so I drove myself to Tim Horton's for a bagel and coffee from the drivethru which was awesome. Also I can now go both up and down the stairs without my cane.

Last day of dogsitting. And my (now engaged) daughter comes home from Disney tomorrow.

And I'm up and moved to the recliner. I just have so many pressure points that get sore in bed. This will pass too.

Maybe I should look into some sort of mattress topper.

Early start again for you! I'm sure it will pass. I think it is as @beachgal said there can be big differences between weeks 3,4 and 5. It's just a little more painful for some getting through them.

I have been researching mattresses. I switched sides of beds to get more comfortable..i found that I woke up stiff and sore. I have a mattress topper but it's had its day. I reckon now a new mattress is in order. I got furniture risers and plan to paint my old sleigh style bed from Cherry wood to white. So I'll have a new bed for a good deal less. I just need to find the energy to do it!

I got about an hour and a half chair nap and I feel much better. But I looked online at mattress toppers and a lot of them are 200-300 dollars-- way more than I'm willing to spend on something that I will hopefully only need for a week or two.

Good morning, girls with mattress troubles. Have you thought about an egg crate topper? I don't use them at home but insist on one for our bed when we cruise. I have zero idea about cost but the darn thing is made out of foam so couldn't be that pricey?!

Ok, just googled Walmarts website and they have foam toppers starting at $10 depending on size you need. Take a peak.

I think those are pretty cheap. You find them helpful? That was more the sort of thing I have in mind. The memory foam ones are the expensive ones. I'm also afraid they will make me feel like this:

@muckingabout Glad you are feeling a bit better. I have used the egg carton foamies in the past and find they do make a difference. Whether they will make enough difference for you now is hard to say. I don't know if real comfort is even possible right now; sure doesn't feel it to me! As the kids left home and needed beds to go with, they wanted memory foam and love them. When I have visited and been lucky enough to be offered the bed, whoa!!! They are so comfortable! I did pay for the higher quality though. You don't feel like you're sinking at all, more like you are sleeping on a cloud. Definitely something I would consider investing in for our master bedroom.
