So these things happened today:

I went upstairs twice to get things. I usually just go down in the morning and up at night.
I tried getting behind the wheel of my car to see if I could get in okay. No problem and I didn't have to physically lift my leg to get it in the car like I did pre-surgery.
I was puttering around my bedroom and forgot my cane/walker.

@muckingabout
I am getting here a bit late, but to chime in about naps, I try to not nap during the day, but if I fall asleep during the day, I do not fight it either. Oddly, whenever you seem to mention your days of naps, those seem to be the same days I find myself drifting off as well. My sleep has been pretty good lately. Little restless this week, but that comes more from the fact that everyday life does not stop just because I am in recovery. I agree with @NoraJ and @beachgal , just let my body tell me. I figure if it wants to sleep, it is the right call.

Sound like some good progress you had today. Nice that you had the left hip, that will speed up your driving capability. I have not yet tried to sleep on my side. I am not doing so until the doc say its okay...but love your golf ball description (sounds about right). I am happy for all that news from you.

As for your morning, tip for ladies, your humor does not disappoint. I can only hope that was a short lived circumstance.

@Carriemay60 I agree with your sentiment about comparing notes, at times it can be hard not to, just casually looking for good insight and stumbling upon others and their own progress. Well said Carrie.

Wishing you a good morning tomorrow

You are well in the road to recovery when you start to leave your walking aide behind.. Well done :)

What a great update!! Love love love it. It just proves that you've been doing all the right things! Just takes a little time for the evidence to appear! You've SO got this!!

Went to Tim Horton's with my daughter this morning for a bagel & coffee. Only my second outing since surgery and the first was to have my staples removed. I thought through whether I could walk the distance on my cane, what I forgot about was sitting in a hard plastic chair with no arms. I ended up standing up after a few minutes, but that's okay, it was a nice outing. I even did okay getting in and out of her Prius.

@muckingabout Sounds like a very nice morning outing! I have been thinking a lot about the Tim Horton's up the road from our house quite a lot, but more in terms of wanting to overdose on donuts! I've been trying (with success so far) to curb a constant craving for sweets the last few days. What I envy most though is that you have a daughter close enough to hang out with!! I was expecting the youngest son home by the end of this weekend for a week before Uni starts for the year but it looks like the theatre change over is going into overtime :(

I knew I would get Timmy Ho's love from you @Carriemay60 :) My daughter is 21 and lives at home and works just around the corner. She came home to check on me at lunch with a bagel and coffee every day my first week.

Is your son involved in theatre? We're big theatre people in this house.

Its funny. I have mixed feelings about how well I am doing in my recovery, but when I was out, I thought, "Hey, I'm out and about just two weeks after hip replacement surgery...who does that?"

@muckingabout You're right, an outing is great if you tolerate it well, a level of normalcy. I know I want to get out for a stroll (push) this weekend as it's supposed to be beautiful out there but also debating if I might feel up to lunch or dinner out.

That is so sweet of your daughter to come and check on like that, bringing you lunch as well! For bagels, Panera is my poison ~ love those but quite the hike from our house to find one.

We have two sons involved in theatre, oldest & youngest. Both have specialized in lighting and design. The oldest did a MA @ Indiana and has worked at a few theatres including the Chicago Shakespeare (even won a Tony as part of the team) and did some teaching at MI State. He now works near Indy for a firm that does mostly commercial lighting and big contract jobs. The youngest is going into his 4th year and is interested to return to his childhood life of living overseas and possibly teaching or a cruiseship job at first until he feels ready to settle down. His summer job this last 2 years has been Head of Lighting for a small theatre in a lakeside tourist area here. He just loves it there and has been offered full time after grad but is unsure as he really wants to travel a bit more :)

I'm good, thanks for asking @beachgal. It's been a busy couple of days. My daughter's off to Disney with her boyfriend's family and we are dogsitting. I spent most of last night sleeping in the recliner with one dog on my lap and the other on my head.

I've been mostly on the cane and even walking unaided more and I showered with minimal supervision this morning :) How are you?

@muckingabout, doing well. Walked about 1/2 mile with hubby and dog as they started their morning. Showered and dressed for a brunch date with hubby. We ate at a lovely French restaurant that we've frequented in the past and consumed a bottle of Pinot Grigio with our onion soup and eggs Benedict. No room for dessert. Nap time for one of us and it's not me.

A few updates:

I've been all cane for a couple of days and I've mostly been tapping rather than leaning if that makes sense. I stopped wearing the TEDs earlier in the week because I noticed I have less swelling with them off for some reason. My swelling is significantly less. It's not gone, but it doesn't interfere with my range of motion. I start PT on Tuesday.

I have a painkiller question. I was sent home with tramadol every six hours as needed. When I first got out I set alarms to take them by the clock and I've gradually reduced so that I'm about every twelve hours.

Here's my conundrum. I have only about 4 left and I'm not sure the best course of action. Should I ask for more from the doctor or should I wean off? I am never in pain really, maybe a two. What I would classify more as discomfort. Any advice!

@muckingabout

Good Morning! I have taken tramadol (one a day) for a couple of years for my arthritis with no ill effects. I would suggest that you get the Rx refilled. That way you have it as needed. If you don't use it all, no harm done but you are really early days and could have a bad day or two even a month or more out from here. Have a great day! :)

Agree with. @Carriemay60 but would suggest substituting two Tylenol for pain to see if that takes the edge off. Still get refill on Tramadol in case PT requires stronger pain med but give the Tylenol a try. It really worked well for me.

@muckingabout
I agree with @Carriemay60 & @beachgal, I would go for the refill. I have about 20 Oxy pills left from my release, but I keep them around for possible needs with PT. I expect to start the following week after my 5 week exam. I plan to refill just in case I need extra pain management during new PT, but want to ask about something lower level than Oxycodone. I hope you are well and always like to hear of your positive progress

Updates!
I went to my first PT last night. It felt pretty good. The bike was fun. Leg lifts, not so much -- ouch. I like the facility though and I'll be able to do water therapy there once I'm cleared for swimming.

I had a bit of a breakdown yesterday because I'm getting so frustrated with being unable to sleep comfortably for any length of time. I make it to maybe 3 or 4 before I give up. Then I fall asleep during the day.

Once I stopped sobbing I came up with these solutions:

- Don't get in bed until I'm ready to sleep -- save reading, etc for downstairs in the recliner.
- Get up and go downstairs when I can't get comfortable instead of getting frustrated. I can try to sleep in the recliner, read or work.
- Accept that I'm going to nap a couple of times a day. It's really only 20 minutes, so I should just relax and stop fighting it.

Today I got down the stairs without my cane which was an unexpected surprise. Unless something comes up my husband is going to take me to practice driving tonight.

Lastly, I really need to be a little easier on myself. I'm only 3 weeks in and am doing great by all accounts. I just need to be patient.
