THR Muckingabout's THR Recovery Thread

I had a tough day yesterday because I overdid it monday, plus being mad that getting my staples out, X-rays and stopping by my office to say hi counts as overdoing it.

@muckingabout Glad you are feeling better today, it seems this really is a rollercoaster for most of us. The more I accept that my recovery is my own and quit comparing notes with others, the better I feel. Hard to do though. I hope your tomorrow is as bright as your today! :)

I tried to sleep on my side last night. Didn't really work for me. My op side felt like I was wearing clown pants full of golf balls, my non-op side just felt heavy and weird.

Tip for the ladies: if you decide to use wipes to "freshen up" be sure that you grab the soothing Shea butter baby wipes NOT the exfoliating grapefruit facial wipes. In other news I'm WIDE AWAKE this morning.

@muckingabout, yikes!! Yes, you'll be wide awake for a while!! Somebody's idea of a "fresh" feeling turns into a jolt!! Hahaha

We could write a book, couldn't we ??

Question for the peanut gallery: How far into recovery do I need to be before I stop falling asleep during the day? Even when I have a good nights sleep, I nod off 2-3 times a day for 20 minutes.

I was never great for napping as it usually meant I didn't sleep at night. But about two weeks ago I ended needing a nap. Your body seems to be telling you that you need the extra sleep and will most likely yell you when you don't. But it's still early days...so could be another couple of weeks.

:alarm: @muckingabout , I have just stopped that really for the most part. I still need to put my head down and feel relaxed completely for 10-15 minutes a couple of times a day but I am not falling asleep mid-sentence anymore :) I think a nap would probably make my evening more enjoyable. Twice this week I have been too tired to eat much by the time dinner happens at 6:30 - 7:00pm. In my 3rd week (where you are now) I was dozing off during dinner, etc. In part, it may be tied to how you are sleeping at night but I think it's just surgery too. I have always maintained it takes me the better part of a year to completely feel normal after anesthetic.

I slept most afternoons for about 3-4 weeks. Then I nodded off for a week more occasionally. When I realized that I was tired, usually after lunch, I sometimes took one of my oxycodones, it put me to sleep for about 2-3 hours, eased the generally low level of pain to zero. I believe that this sleep really helped my recovery. (I used the oxy very sparingly, and only for a short time, so I have many many of the pills left from what they gave me to take home.) I am 8 weeks out now, and doing really well.

Good luck with your recovery,

Mark

@MarkK , I completely agree, I think that sleep (or quiet time without electronic stimulation, if not sleeping) is a huge part of a good recovery. I am still not up to much in terms of activity between my leg and hip but I do spend lots of time with the TV on or playing computer crib, facebook, etc. I still shut all that off a couple of times a day to just be quiet. If I fall asleep, I go with the flow. If not, it is still refreshing and restful.

I certainly relaxed and lay down in the afternoons but naps have never suited me much. As much as anything it was just relaxing and if sleep came so be it.... I found that I was more out of sorts if I slept badly at night than if I didn't have a nap....it is each to their own.

Thanks for the input. That helps. It's okay for now because I'm working from home, but writing for two hours, napping for 20 minutes writing for an hour, eating lunch.... will probably not go over well in the office. I was hoping to get back in there beginning of September, but that's not looking realistic from here.

You'll know yourself when your ready.. but it may be too soon. I know Josephine would say at least 10 or 12 weeks off work. I'll be 13 when I start back and honestly I don't think I would have been able for my job sooner. I was fortunate that here three months is the norm not the exception. I'll let you know how Monday goes...I already have four meeting booked in for me!

I'm not napping during the day but I still rest. By that, I mean I'm not going to lala land for sleeping but I do close my eyes and relax in my recliner about twice a day. It's usually after I've had some activity and I'll grab my ice pack and my favorite coverlet and snuggle in.

I sleep better at night without naps but I know my body needs for me to get off my feet and chill. These periods of rest are so important. Give your body what it needs.
