THR Merrimay's on the other side now THR

any advice as to putting on compression sleeves, not socks, without breaking the 90 degree rule?
Impossible I am afraid! And I would not advise struggling with them. If you are taking blood thinning medication and moving around regularly during the day you should be fine. If you are worried, call your surgeon's office and ask if it is OK to leave them off.

I'll be moving a lot since my sister leaves this afternoon and I take a 325 mg aspirin each day. Thank you, Jaycey. I'll hope for the best.

I suggest you call your OS's office also and I'm betting they'll let you ditch them.
Hateful things, aren't they? :hairpulling:

My surgeon prescribed them and at the two week point I called to see if I could stop using them. I learned during that call that they often over prescribe as in telling you to wear them for a longer amount of days and for extended periods of time daily because they're hoping you'll wear them at least half the amount of time prescribed! This bit of info, out of my surgeon's PA's mouth!

If you're like me, you may want to follow your surgeon's protocol whether you like it, or not. I did because I figured if something went wrong because I didn't follow his instruction, it would be my own fault. I'm guessing they'll give you permission to burn them. I'll be watching over yonder for a cloud of smoke. :wink:
Good luck and Happy Tuesday!
@Merrimay

PS I have every confidence you'll do fine on your own as sis heads back home today. :)

Hi Layla, thanks for the tips. I'll stay as active as I can and hope for the best. I truly appreciate your detailed and caring answer.

I guess every OS has different recommendations. I went to KOC which is where I believe you went. I didn't have compression socks, just keep moving my feet with ankle pumps. Took an aspirin a day with a Famotidine chaser to protect my stomach washed down with a Miralax cocktail.

Eman85, good to hear from a fellow KOC veteran. Your experience is reassuring. I move around a lot now that I'm alone and have pets to care for and a bathroom and kitchen to clean. I take a 325 mg aspirin once a day. I do my ankle and toe pumps. Based on your and Layla's experience, I'm going to try to put the blood clot scenario put of my mind.

Howdy. I had the stockings the first time around but they were really too small. Spoke to the surgeons office and GP. They both asked if I was moving around, walking, doing some exercises and then said in that case don't bother. Took blood thinners anyway. Thankfully, I was not given them this time and was told by a staff nurse they may soon be a thing of the past. Good luck with your recovery. Oh, the only way to get the things on without breaking the 90 degree rule is if you were putting them on someone else.

@Merrimay Several years after my BTHR I had a physician tell me I should wear those dratted stockings every day ( related to an issue not having anything to do with my hips!). I listened to her not at all! When I did have to wear them after the hip surgeries I did so for only as long as it took me to get home. I know all the rationale behind wearing them but they are such a pain to put on, take off and to wear!!! And for me they seemed to make my legs hurt more and just squashed the swelling upwards.

djklaugh and dk63, I like your spirit. Got thru the night just fine without ice or compression sleeves. Pleased when I woke up to little pain, but then I've learned it all varies from minute to minute. Layer I received a phone call from home health, and in my rush to get to my calendar, I twisted the operative leg and am currently in severe pain. As an American on Medicare and a private insurer Medicare supplement, it looks like I qualify for a one hour personal hygiene visit twice a week. No other help until Week 4 when I start on PT until I'm cleared to drive. It can't come soon enough!

Merrimay,
You are so early in recovery you will notice different aches and pains on different days as well as days when you feel totally fine.
Take advantage of whatever assistance you can receive.

I also did the pillow thing, but with somewhat less finesse than @Merrimay. I stationed 2 fat pillows between my legs, one at knee level and one around ankle level, and sort of sand-bagged myself in with the side of the couch or, if in bed, more pillows. I used pillows by my shoulder as well. You will figure it out, promise.

Day 7 and my pre-surgery home health PT dropped by to assess my progress. My incision is looking good, most of my swelling has gone down, and there's minimal bruising. Unfortunately I barely bend the knee of my "surgical" leg and drag my foot, he says. I said, "Like a zombie?" He nodded. And here I'd been most proud of my gait!! Fortunately, I'll be working with him at home 3 times a week for two weeks. Pain is much reduced today, so I've decided it just comes and goes and so I shouldn't allow it to distract me. I've also doing fine on my own after my sister's departure. In fact, I like the greater control it gives me! And so I successfully made it through Week 1!

Congrats on making it through your first full week. You're doing great! Positive news on the appearance of the incision, less swelling and minimal bruising. I remember that getting to the end of the first week was a good feeling. After that the weeks began passing rather quickly.

I think those PT visits will help any boredom or loneliness that can develop from feeling rather homebound initially.
You're on your way, Merrimay! :yes:
@Merrimay

Oh, and here I was worried about taking showers without someone else in the house to hear if I fell. Took a shower today wearing pool shoes and using long-handled brushes and lotion applicators while holding onto the grab bar. I felt steady on my feet, no fears at all. Unless your OS recommends putting off showers or you feel unsteady, showering may well make you feel better!

That's great Merrimay! Sounds like you are moving along just fine and only one week after your surgery!
The positive news about being on your own is you can do or not do whatever you want!!!
I agree with Layla about your PT person will help reduce boredom as well as help you on your road to recovery.
Hope there is someone in neighborhood or nearby that can run errands for you?

Hi Myglasshalffull,
I have a friend who happily run errands for me, tho I like to keep my requests few. My sister also left me a full larder, so I'm grateful to report that I'm surrounded by plenty! Friends phone in to check up on me. So I'm in good shape. It was afraid

Oops. Fear bthat made me think I couldn't manage on my own. I'm doing fine of I say so myself. :)
